Problem 1: Calculations (30 points)

A building has an inside temperature of T1 (degrees C) and an outside temperature of
T2 (degrees C). A glass window in the structure has a surface area A in meters squared
and a thickness d in meters. The thermal conductivity valueof the window glass is k.
The equation relating the heat transfer rate in watts to these variables is
=(12)/
Do the following:
1. For a window that has a surface area A of 6 square meters, a thickness d of 3/8 of an
inch, and a thermal conducivity value k of .029 W/mC, use the formula above to
calculate the rate of heat transfer (in watts) through the window at the outside
temperatures in degrees F of 25, 32, 39, 46, 54, 61, and 68. Assume the inside
temperature is constant at 70 degrees F. Note: Use cell referencing so you could
change the values of A, d, and k and the calculation would automatically update. Also
pay attention to units! Unit conversions may be needed.
2. If the building specification requires that the heat transfer rate at 32 degrees F is
3000 W or less, is this requirement being met with the current window? Why or why
not?
3. Assuming everything else stays the same, what thermal conductivity rate (k) does
the window need to have for the heat transfer rate to be 3000 W at an outside
temperature of 32 degrees F? Show your calculations and write a sentence to
summarize your answer.

Problem 1: Calculations (30 points)

The coefficient of friction, , can be determined in an experiment by measuring
the force F required to move a mass m. When F is measured (in Newtons or
kg*m/s2) and m ( in kg) is known, the coefficient of friction can be calculated using
the equation
=/()
where g = 9.81 m/s2.
Do the following:
1. Six blocks made of different bioplastic materials (plastics made from renewable
plant materials) weighing 2 pounds each were tested to measure F. These six
blocks have the following coefficients of friction (): 1.10, 0.70, 0.90, 1.40, 0.45,
0.61. Calculate F for each block using the equation above. Note: Use cell referencing
so you could change the value of m and the calculation would automatically update. Also
pay attention to units! Unit conversions may be needed.

2. If the bioplastic is going to be used in a product that requires a force F of 5 N or

less, do any of the blocks meet the specificaiton? If so, which one(s)? Note: Write
an answer to the question and also shade any rows in your data/calculations table
that meet the specifiation.
3. What coefficient of friction is needed for the force on a 3 pound block to be 5 N?

Problem 1: Calculations (30 points)

The ideal gas law relate the pressure P, volume V, and absolute temperature T
(degrees K), and the amount of gas n using the following equation:
=/
An engineer must design a large natural gas storage tank to be explandable to
maintain the pressure at a constant 2.5 atm. In December when the temperature
is 4 degrees F, the volume of gas in the tank is 28,000 ft 3.
Do the following:
1. Determine the value of the same volume of gas at the following temperatures
in degrees F: 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100. Assume that n, R, and P are constant.
Note: Use cell referencing so you could change the value of P and the calculation would
automatically update. Also pay attention to units! Unit conversions may be needed.

2. A particular tank the engineer has designed can hold a maximum volume of
30,000 ft3 and will be operated in the temperature range zero degrees F to 80
degrees F. Given the information you calculated in Part A, is the tank large enough
to hold the needed volume of gas over the entire temperature range? Why or why
not?
3. If the pressure is increased to 3 atm, at what temperature in degrees F will the
tank volume be 30,000 ft3? Show your calculations and write a sentence to summarize
your answer.
