with raising the quality of products and services the company is providing. The standard is published by the ISO organization,
an international organization that designs and publishes sets of standard requirements for many different aspects of technology
and business that are used worldwide and are developed by global consensus. One of the main benefits of the ISO 9001
standard is that it is accepted globally as the leading standard for quality management, and companies can be certified against
it as a way of showing they meet the requirements without further customer audits.

ISO 9001: How it is implemented

The implementation of an ISO 9001 Quality Management System is done through the creation of policies, processes,
procedures and records that document the processes of the company. The ISO 9001 requirements are a generic list of which
policies, procedures, processes and records should be in place in the system; but, being generic, they define what is to be
implemented, not how to implement it. This is left to the company to tailor to meet the needs of the company and its customers.
Generally, a company should start with identifying the processes for providing their product or service which are already in
place and functioning in the organization. Along with these are any additionally identified processes that need to be added to
complete the Quality Management System. The overall goals of the Quality Management System are to meet customer
requirements, and improve both the system and customer satisfaction.

ISO 9001: Common Implementation Problems

Probably the biggest problem faced by companies implementing an ISO 9001 Quality Management System occurs when they
do not start by documenting the systems and processes already in place. When you start by trying to record an idealized
process that is not actually in use, you run into difficulties with employee acceptance of the process. The idea of ISO 9001 is to
start with what is in place, and work to improve the system and processes over time.
Another problem commonly faced is in making sure that proper communication of the elements of the system is done.

Employees do not just need to know that a Quality Policy and processes exist; they need to understand how these relate to
their jobs and how their actions impact the effectiveness of the overall Quality Management System. By not doing this, you run the risk that employees will
unknowingly be utilizing processes which do not reflect the overall goals of the organization.
Lastly, other variations of typing ISO 9001, such as ISO 90001 and ISO 9014, do not exist but are confused with the standard for various reasons. The only ISO
standard that defines requirements for a Quality Management System is ISO 9001.
