Figure 11. Hilum in relation to cortex, medulla, and capsule

(dartmouth.edu)
III. SPLEEN

Remember that in function, it is not a lymphoid organ in

the sense that its main function is with your blood
circulatory system (filter blood rather than lymph)
No cortex nor medulla

A. Germinal Center

located at the boundary of white pulp

C. White Pulp
What can be seen? (2018)

Always contain a Central artery

Periarterial Lymphoid Sheath (PALS): T cell area

forming a sheath around a central artery

Lymphoid follicle: formed by B cells; usually located at

the edge of PALS

Mantle Zone: narrow zone of small lymphocytes at the

periphery of lymphoid follicles

Marginal Zone: less densely packed medium-sized

lymphocytes supported by a reticulin fibers; between
white pulp and spleen;

Germinal Center: center of B cell proliferation

Figure 12. Germinal Center (Spleen). WP = White pulp; RP =

red pulp
B. Trabeculae

Emerges from dense CT of capsule

Partially subdivide the parenchyma/splenic pulp

Immune System

Anat12C

Cortex highly ceullar part; contains thymocytes

(immature and maturing T cells; will appear as dark
colored cells in the cortex)

Medulla lighter; less cellular part; contains Hassal

corpuscle

Interlobular septa radiate from the capsule; contains

blood vessels

Capsule loose collagenous

*thymus does not have hilum

Groups of keratinized epithelial cells

Large concentric layers of flattened type VI
epithelioreticular cells
Eosinophilic

V. Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT)

Mucosa associated they dont form organs, they

form: accumulation of lymphoid tissue in other organs
(can be found beneath epithelial surfaces)
A. Tonsils
Figure 32. Palatine Tonsils

Figure 30. H&E Stain; Low Magnification (diFiores)

Finding tonsillar crypts will help you identify the slide
as a lymphatic tonsil! (recall that they have stratified
squamous epithelium and tonsillar crypts are just
invaginations of SSE)
Lymphatic nodules are many and often lie close to the
crypts (including germinal centers)
Lymphatic sinuses absent in l.tonsils

Figure 33. Pharyngeal tonsil (2016)

B. Peyers Patches

Seen as little bumps in the GI wall (ileum)

Found in mucosa layer and may extend into submucosa
Overlaid by few villi
Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT)
Remember na large aggregates of lymph nodules ang
peyers patch
