Magazine Cover Analysis:

This magazine is of Teen Vogue which is popular with

the younger generation, mainly girls which would
make this their target audience. The mast head is
adjusted at the top of the magazine and is one of the
main focuses on the cover, due to its large size. The
typeface of the text on the cover is used throughout
the magazine, this conveys that there is a sense of
persistence of the design. The colours of the mast
head contrast each other as pink is a darker colour
than white and this adds to the overall theme of the
magazine design.
The male gaze may be used here because of the
celebrity, Kylie Jenner, being positioned on the front.
However, she is also a lot of girls inspiration so this
would add to the overall attraction of the magazine.
The photo is also quite editorial, suggesting that the
magazine is highly respected. Many popular names
are also used on the front cover, such as Cody
Simpson, Tyga, Gigi Hadid and Meghan Trainor.
These will attract other niche audiences who may find
these celebrities as their inspiration. As the running
head is in large text, this conveys that it is the Splash
and will feature as a double page spread in the
magazine.
The way that the model is positioned is quite relaxed
and natural, this could represent the magazine as
though they are of a natural respect and is quite
simplistic. There are only three main colours used and
this adds to the simplistic theme of the cover.

This magazine cover is of a simplistic nature and

consists of only two colours; white and black. As
there is not much featured on the page, it allows
readers to focus on two main aspects- the mast head
and the model. It also will make the reader want to
know what is inside the magazine and what it is
about. The typeface of the mast head reflects the
actual word of sassy as the font is quite typical of a
sassy aspect. The main target audience of this
magazine would be a young generation, which may
be the reason as to why they had used a young
Johnny Depp on the front as he is classed as eye
candy. The use of the wob makes the text stand out
to the dark background which will catch the readers
eye and make it stand out more.
The use of the rhetorical question on the front cover
will make the reader seem intrigued towards what is
inside the magazine and this will may make them
want to read it. The model is posing as being relaxed
to add to the simplistic and minimalistic tone of the
magazine. Furthermore, the hairstyle of the model
reflects the theme of naturalism as it appears as
though not much has been done to it.

The title of this magazine is quite a popular indie

magazine and people who mainly listen to indie music
will know more of this magazine. It would be mainly an
audience of a younger generation who would read this
magazine which would be why the focus of it is of a
male who would be classed as eye candy. This will
bring in the female gaze to further the sales of this
magazine. The masthead is one of the main focuses of
this cover as it contrasts with the colours in the
background. White is a widely popular colour that is
used on Indie magazines as usually the colour is
darker, however, on this occasion, as the writing is
positioned on top of the models face, some bits are
quite hard to read such as the names that go down the
side.
Other artists are mentioned on the front to remind the
reader that the magazine is not just aimed at one
artist- The 1975, this will allow people who are fans of
other music to have a look at the magazine. As the
main image is of someone from The 1975, it will
convey to the readers that there is most likely an
article on this band.
The colour scheme that has been used is quite quirky
and bright and the writing is of a more neutral colour
and this contrasts so that it catches the readers eye.

Contents Page Analysis:

This contents page is from a magazine called Vibe

which is mainly an urban styled magazine, therefore,
this design would have been made to attract a younger
generation target audience. The mast head is adjusted
to the right of the page to allow room for the models
legs and is in a white typeface; this will reflect the rest
of the magazine as the colour and 3 word split is used
throughout the magazine. The white font makes the
mast head stand out against the dark background and
this will attract the readers eye. It uses a simplistic
design to maintain the readers attention.
The title contents is a conventional feature of the
Vibe magazine and the layout of this word being
broken into three lines adds an edge to the magazine
and is consistent with the sleek style of Vibe
Magazines. The contents list has been made into two
categories which makes it easier for the reader to
navigate round and avoids any confusions that may
arise. The headings are bold and in a larger text, this
will allow the reader to easily scan over the page
instead of having to read the whole text, for if they
were looking for something in particular.
The main focus is Ciaras positioning which is of a V
shape and this reflects the V in the background.
Having her against the white background highlights her
and this will show the readers the importance of Ciara
and that she is the main selling point of this issue.

The mast head Vogue is one of the focus points

of this page, this is not normal as usually it would
be Contents as that is what the page is about.
However, this is not essential as a magazine
should be recognisable from the masthead which
is placed underneath contents. The front cover is
what people see first therefore the job of it is to
draw people in whereas the contents page is just
to give detail of what the article will be. The red
date can be clearly seen next to the black text
which makes it easier for the reader to see when
it was released. A subscription has been used at
the bottom of the page to signal to the readers
that they have other magazines that they can sign
up to. This also allows them to contact the
magazine company for any queries. The use of the
page numbers next to the context list is
conventionally used throughout all magazines.
The colour scheme of the contents page are black,
white, red and grey; these colours emphasise
sophistication which make the magazine look
more stylish. The main image of this page is the
model in the middle, she has been styles so to
attract the male gaze and inspired female viewers.

As the same font is continued from the cover page

and now on the contents page, it supports the
connection of style throughout the magazine.
Previous issues from the magazines are featured at
the top of the page to outline to the readers that
there are other issues to this magazine, this is
marketing the previous issues. Contents contrasts
the typographical font to the rest of the page,
allowing it to stand out for its individuality and lets
the reader easily be able to see that this is the
contents page.
The colour scheme of this page is white and black
with a little colour in the top left corner. This adds to
the minimalistic theme of an Indie magazine. It also
makes it seem more mature and sophisticated
which is aimed at their target audience of a younger
generation (17-25).
The layout of the magazine consists of lines which
creates a sense of professionalism and adds to the
clear structuring of the page. The whole page is
filled with content to make it look evenly spaced
and does not get ruined by blank spaces. The
headings categorise the page and allows the reader
to locate what exactly it is they are looking for, or
what they want to read. Furthermore, the bold font
makes the headings stand out from the white
background, gaining more attention from readers.

Double-Page Spread Analysis:

This double page spread contains many different images that are scattered across the page, as these
all have bright, contrasting colours, they make it easy to catch the readers eye, instead of the text
next to them. Ariana Grande is pictured in all the photos as she is the main image of both pages, her
name is also put in bold in the main caption above the story. This allows readers to know the models
name for if they did not know before.
The colour scheme of this double page spread is mainly white, blue and pink as I find that these are
the three colours that stand out the most when glancing at the page. These all contrast with the
blank background so that the pictures stand out more. The text is positioned as if it is encased by all
the images and so the text is one of the last things that people read. It is also in a small size which
adds to its blend in the background.
Many facts are spread around the page; Arianas playlist, Get her look and Arianas teen vogue
takeover. These take up the blank space so that no attention is given to any bare parts of the page. A
common feature that is used in many magazines is the use of a drop cap- W. This introduces the
story and shows to the reader clearly where it starts.

A common feature of having one side a picture and the other side consist of text is used in this
double page spread which makes it seem more sophisticated, however not so unique. There is also
the use of a drop cap to let the reader know where the story starts. The tombstoning of the article on
the opposing side allows the article to follow the house style of magazines as this is a generic
convention. Both features create a smart sense, therefore, I think that I may incorporate it into my
magazine.
There is a faded image in the background which I find to be unique as it is not like other pictures
where there is just a white background, this makes both pages correspond well and sustains
awareness of the article. The by-lines in the middle of the page give reference to the writer,
photographer and stylist; this adds a business-like touch to the page. As the text is small, it is then
encased in a green box to bring emphasis to it and links the green to the shirt on the model on the
adjacent page. An artistic flare is added to the page by the creators adding in a wavy line down the
middle, separating the pages, furthermore, there is a black triangle in the corner to represent a page
turn, this shows that the creators think that this is an interesting page, therefore influencing readers.

The whole left of the article is taken up by an image which is a common convention of music
magazines. This also clearly establishes who the article is about and builds iconography. The name of
the artist is mentioned in the top right corner as is in a large, bold typeface and stands out to the
original writing in the article. It displays to the reader who the musician is without any confusion. A
short introduction is set next to the article to sum up the objective its approaching. The creators
have used a bolder and larger font to differentiate the two.
It is conventional for magazines to have a newspaper style of presentation. This layout makes it
easier to read and compose whilst also fitting in extra space for article information. The mast head
title also appears in the corner which makes it obvious to the reader who the magazine is from and
what brand it is. A drop cap is used behind the first column of the article and is contrasting to the
background and the photograph. This suits the audiences expectations as it is another convention
which is used in magazines. It is significant that readers can flick through the magazine freely without
any complications of pages, therefore, page numbers are usually requested in the corners or pages.
