AllpeoplewillbenefitfromthehealingjourneyofQuanYin.Shehasbeen
worshippedastheChineseBodhisattvaofcompassionbymanyforthousandsof
years.Abodhisattvaisanysoulthathasattainedenlightenmentbutinsteadofbeing
freedofthekarmiccyclesandbecomingaBuddha,insteadchoosestostayonearth
inordertohelpallbeingsattaintheirenlightenment.Thatisabasicsummaryofthe
bodhisattvavow.ItissaidthatasQuanYinwasabouttoenterheaven,shepaused
andheardthecriesoftheworld,hercompassionwassogreatshereturnedtohelp
them.
QuanYininSanskritmeansshewhohearsthecriesofthepeople.Thespelling
ofhernamevariesincludingKwanYin,KuanYin,Guanshiyin,Guanyin,
Kwannon,GwunYam,GunYam,andKannon.ShealsoholdsmanytitlesThe
GoddessofMercy,GentleProtectoress,BodhisattvaofCompassion,andBestower
ofchildrenandthesavioroffishermen.QuanYincalledherselfTheMotherofall
Buddhas.Thismotheringaspectofherselfconnectshertoallbeings,especially
thoseinpain.QuanYinsaidAlthoughIamBodhisattva,Iamenergy.Iamnota
person.Basically,theKwanYinenergywasneverinonesinglebody.Ithasalways
beenagreatpartoftheenergyofallofcompassionofalltheUniverse.Whatyou

periodoftime,sothatshecanletusbeapartofherrealityandtosharethatwith
yousothatyoucanbeencouraged,andthatyoucanalsobringforwardthepartof

compassionandunconditionallovemakehercomparabletoMotherMaryinthe
West,GreenTarainTibetanculture,theVirginofGuadeloupeinMexico,and
manyotherancientgoddesses,thematriarchyofold.
SheisworshipedbyBuddhistsandTaoistsinChina,Korea,JapanandTibet.She
firstappearedaround400ADasaMaleBodhisattvaofCompassioncalled
Avalokitesvara,orAvalokite.Avalokitesvaragraduallychangedtoafemaleknown
asQuanYinandby1200ADshewasdefinitelyconsideredafemaleGoddess
wearingflowingrobes.SomebelieveshewasreincarnatedasMiaoShanaChinese
Princessknownasthewonderfullykindonewholivedaround700BConan
islandmeditatingandsavingfishermanfromshipwreck.
ThesymbolsthatareassociatedwithandsacredtoQuanYinincludealotus,black
tea,rice,sweetcakesandrainbows.BeingafertilityGoddesssheisassociatedwith
birthandprotectsyoungchildren.CrystalsandMineralsassociatedwithQuanYin
areRoseQuartz,Amethyst,Malachite,Rhodocrosite,Aventurine,RoseCalcite,
NirvanaQuartz,KunziteandGreenTourmaline.Allofwhichresonateprimarily
withtheHeartChakraenergycenterforhealingandselflove.
AcommonwayofworshippingQuanYinisbyrepeatinghernameoverandover
asamantra.Thisissaidtorelievesufferingandenhancecompassion.Aneastern
customofworshipforQuanYinistoleavesweetcakes,lotusincense,freshfruit
and/orflowerstobeblessedwithchildrenortohaveQuanYinprotecttheyoung
onesinyourlifeii.AnothercommonmantrausedtoworshipQuanYinisOmMani
PadmeHum(pronouncedOmManiPemeHung).Thismantraisknownasthe
mantraoftheBuddhaofCompassion,whichpurifiesnegativeemotions.This
mantrawasoriginallyforAvalokitesvaraandisnowassociatedwithQuanYin.The
meaningofOmManiPadmeHumishardtotranslateintoasimplephraseor
sentencetheclosestshorttranslationisthejewelinthelotus,becauseallthe
teachingsoftheBuddhaarecontainedinthissinglemantra.Thissacredmantrahas
somuchmeaningespeciallywhenbrokendownonewordatatime:
