In the six years since Crestwood

resident Glenda Gauss began quilting,
she has made over 500 quilts each
one dedicated to her father. One
is her Ulysses S. Grant Historic
Retrospective Quilt, which now hangs
at the Ulysses S. Grant National
Historic Site.
Gauss and her husband, Gary, enjoy
going to the site to see the historical
impersonators, so she decided to make
a quilt in honor of the national parks
100th anniversary last year.
I got Grants timeline off the
website, then I started looking for
quilt blocks that pertained to him and
the events that occurred during his
lifetime, said Gauss, age 63.
The 90-inch by 82-inch quilt
consists of 72 eight-inch blocks and
include representations of President

Tips To Get Healthy & Avoid Injuries

Exercise is important component
of healthy lifestyle for seniors
Exercise
is
an
important
component of a healthy lifestyle.
Daily exercise can improve mood,
promote an active lifestyle and reduce
a persons risk for a host of ailments,
including diabetes and heart disease.
Despite the importance of exercise,
many people live sedentary lifestyles
into their golden years. Seniors
who want to embrace a healthier
way of life and get more physically
active should first consult with their
physicians.
Certain
medications

push themselves, while preexisting

conditions may make specific types of
exercise off limits. After developing
a safe exercise routine, seniors can
heed the following tips to avoid injury
but still get healthy.
Pick A Partner. Doing so can
provide motivation and partners can
serve as safety nets for help with
an exercise or in case of an injury.
Personal trainers can serve as a
partner, and many gyms offer senior
discounts on their services.
Start Slowly. The American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
(AAOS) recommends seniors begin
by determining how many steps
they can take in a day and then
gradually working toward 10,000 to
15,000 steps per day. Utilize step
counting apps on a smartphone
to track progress. Apply the same
slow approach to strength training
exercises, lifting only very light
weights at first before gradually
increasing weight as their body

The Mary Culver home offers:
27 private rooms
One nursing caregiver for every six residents
One all-inclusive monthly fee, no hidden costs
Not-for-profit life care; you wont have to leave if your health declines

acclimates to the exercises.

Stretch. The AAOS recommends
that seniors warm up before
stretching with five to 10 minutes
of low-intensity activity such as
walking.
Then
stretch
gently,
remembering to relax and breathe
during each stretch.
Switch Things Up. When
strength training, do not work the
same muscle group two days in a row.
Leave at least one day in between
strength training sessions so muscles
have ample time to recover.

Crestwoods Gauss Quilts For Others from page 5

I made the first four blocks myself, Gauss
said, pointing out a horseman, because he
(Grant) loved horses all his life. There is a
block representing the war between the United
States and Mexico, a piece of tanning material
because Grants father was a tanner, and a
block representing his money troubles after he
left the presidency.
After the first four blocks that I invented,
I thought reinventing the wheel was a stupid
thing to do, she said. There are quilt patterns
out there that I can use and would be easier to
follow.
So my husband got (quilting) books from the
library and pulled out the ones that I thought
would pertain to the timeline, she said.
From her research, Gauss chose quilt block
patterns such as the Ohio Star, which represents
where Grant was born, a West Point Star where
Grant went to school, then the Missouri Star
because he came here to live and he met his
future wife, Julia Dent.
Gauss started the quilt Jan. 2, 2016, and
finished the blocks on May 30.
In September, she presented the quilt to
Liz Forrestal of the Jefferson National Parks
Association as a donation.
Gausss mother was a home economics
teacher, so Gauss started sewing at the age of 6,
despite having contracted polio at age 3, which
left her without full use of her left hand. It was
her fathers illness in 2011 that prompted Gauss
to start quilting.
I had to be in the room with my dad to watch
him, and I was piecing things together that
my mother had, she said. Shes 93 and still
quilting, so I decided one day I could make a
quilt for myself.
Dad was lying in bed and he asked if he
could do anything, and I told him I was making
a quilt, Gauss said. I told him I would lay
it over him and he could tell me if there was
enough love in it.

Now, every quilt I make is a dedication to my
dad, she said. The first year after he passed, I
gave 65 quilts to friends and family, then the
next year I gave 50 red, white and blue quilts to
military people.
Gauss estimates she has made over 500
quilts since then.

evidenced by the recent presidential

As a social worker, as a teacher,
I have been able to witness the
demise of what we call our mediating

service organizations and political

suffered from self-inflicted wounds
that have eroded faith that people once
placed in them. This all contributes to
the division, Keilholz said.
From 1999 to 2010, Keilholz was

I have always disliked giving out

change their thinking and put that
new thinking into practice, she said.
Keilholz received her bachelor of
