author of this text tells the story with a combination of illustrations and words, 284 of the pages are
illustrations and the story cannot be fully comprehended without taking a complete consideration of the
illustrations. Students can connect to the text because two of the main characters are children about 12
years of age. This is a great book for struggling readers and reluctant readers because it is a thick book
with 526 pages yet many of the pages are illustrations and some pages have text but not that many words
on the page. Struggling readers will have a sense of accomplishment when they are reading this book and
they can gain confidence in their reading ability. Students will learn how to connect the story that is told
in words to the parts of the story that are told in pictures.

It usually has a very distinct style of animation that features large eyes, exaggerated emotional
responses, fine features, strangely-colored hair, and other character features that will become
familiar over time as one reads manga.

Tetsuo Hara has continually illustrated the life and times of a man's man.
Camera angles, not words, are used to express emotions like rage and sorrow.
Tetsuo Hara is able to get his message across to the readers even if they don't read the words on the page.
This is a fragment of Tetsuo Hara's current serial, Ikusa no Ko.
The story revolves around the moment the Japanese general Nobunaga Oda lost his father. The focus of
this story is the deep sorrow often associated with the death of a loved one.
Shnen Manga: Aimed at a young male audience, usually between the ages of 8-18. Traditionally have a
young male hero and are focused on action, adventure, and fighting. Subjects can be martial arts, robots,
science fiction, sports, horror, mythological creatures etc. Recently more Shnen Manga have lead female
characters.
Examples: Dragon Ball, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Attack on Titan.
Shjo Manga: Aimed at young teenage girls. The Japanese (shjo), literally means "young girl".
Shjo Manga covers all different narrative styles, but with a focus on romantic relationships or emotions.
Examples: Special A, Candy Candy, Kimi ni Todoke, Boys Over Flowers, Vampire Knight, Ouran High
School Host club, Skip Beat, Wolf Girl and Black Prince, My Little Monster, Fruits Basket,
Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Seinen Manga:
(Say-Nen) Aimed at adolescent boys and men up through middle age. Seinen Manga can focus on action,
politics, science fiction, fantasy, relationships, sports, or comedy and they may contain adult themes.
Examples:
Berserk, Aiki, One Punch Man, Battle Royal, Vagabond. The female equivalent to Seinen Manga is Josei
Manga.

Shnen Manga: Comics for young teenage boys
Shjo Manga: Comics for young teenage girls
Seinen Manga: Comics for young adult males
Seijin Manga: Adult comics for males

originated in Japan, where it has become a popular literary genre.

Graphic Novel Genre

a type of text combining words and imagesessentially a comic, although the term most
commonly refers to a complete story presented as a book rather than a periodical.
