1. Course Description:
This course is concerned with the mechanics of rigid and deformable solids in a state of
equilibrium. The fundamental principles of rigid body statics (forces, moments, equilibrium) are
first reviewed. These principles will then be applied to deformable solid bodies. The concepts to
be covered includes: Fundamental principles of mechanics; Introduction to the mechanics of
deformable bodies; Forces and Moments transmitted by slender members; Stress- Strain; StressStrain Temperature relations; Torsion; stresses and deflections due to bending; Stability of
equilibrium; Failure Criteria applied to Brittle and Ductile materials.
2. Course Outcomes:
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
1. To understand the theory of elasticity including strain/displacement and Hookes law
relationships.
2. To solve torsion problems in bars and thin walled members.
3. To solve for stresses and deflections of beams under various loading
4. To locate the shear center of thin wall beams.
5. To obtain stresses and deflections of beams.
6. To obtain solutions to column buckling and plate problems.
7. To apply various failure criteria for general stress states at points.
All these would be achieved both conceptually and through solved examples.
