Weld Joint Design

requiredcomparedtothoseforcarbonorstainlesssteelinparticular,alargerincludedweldangle,
widerrootopening(gap),andreducedland(rootface)thicknessaretypicallyrequired.
Themostimportantcharacteristicthatmustbeunderstoodwhenconsideringweldjointdesignisthat
NiandCobasemoltenweldmetalisrelativelysluggish,meaningthatitdoesnotfloworspreadout
asreadilyto"wet"thesidewallsoftheweldjoint.Therefore,caremustbetakentoensurethatthejoint
openingiswideenoughtoallowproperelectrodemanipulationandplacementoftheweldbeadto
achieveproperweldbeadtieinandfusion.Theweldingarcandfillermetalmustbemanipulatedin
ordertoplacethemoltenmetalwhereitisneeded.Thejointdesignshouldallowforthefirstweldbead

Additionally,weldpenetrationissignificantlylessthanthatofatypicalcarbonorstainlesssteel.This
characteristicrequirestheuseofreducedlandthicknessattherootofthejointcomparedtocarbonand
stainlesssteel.SincethisisaninherentpropertyofNi/Cobasealloys,increasingweldcurrentwillnot
significantlyimprovetheirshallowweldpenetrationcharacteristics.
