Why Focus on Reading Comprehension


Making sure we understand what the text is saying is the most important
thing readers must do
Learning to build these skills on your own, and answering the questions you
may have about a text will help you succeed not only in ELA but in all
aspects of your life
Today we are going to look at two types of reading comprehension
strategies that will help you, especially when given material that may initially be
confusing
Tomorrow, we will look specifically at short passages like the type you will
see on the SBA

Reading Comprehension Strategies to Get You Started


R E A D T H E Q U E S T I O N S F I R S T : Know what youre looking for, and read with
a purpose.
M A K E A R E A D E R S R O A D M A P : Determine the topic, scope, purpose, and
main idea. If you dont know what the author is trying to accomplish, its easy
to get confused.
