CASA 802

| Outline

The CASA 802 is a 324-square-foot micro home that provides

sustainable, beautiful housing for people from all income levels.
CASAs immediate and long-term objective is to develop a regionally
derived, affordable housing model that offers an alternative to
the mobile home. Inspired by Vermonts vernacular architecture,
CASA 802 aims to fit into its surroundings with its gabled form
and material palette, while simultaneously introducing a new way of
living through modern detailing and a reduced footprint. Containing
all of the essentials for daily life, CASA 802 consists of a kitchen,
bathroom, bedroom, and storage loft. Custom built-in birch
plywood furniture provides carefully planned storage, seating and
work space. Standing seam metal wraps the roof and long exterior
walls; the gable end walls and covered porch are charred local
white cedar. Two walls in the bathroom are finished in aluminum
for a durable waterproof finish. Plentiful natural light enters through
windows and doors to create a bright, welcoming space.
The goals of this project are two-fold. Beyond providing a similar
price-point, sustainable and beautiful alternative to the trailer, CASA
802 encourages experiential learning. The academic design-build
studio supports the idea that building, making and designing are
intrinsic to each other: knowledge of one strengthens and informs
the expression of the other. Hands on learning through the act of
building what you design, translates theories and ideas into real
world experience. Design-build grounds us in the physicality of the
world we live in. Students in the CASA 802 studio gained unique
experience through the design and construction of this home.

Program: The CASA 802
Responsibility of the architect: Oversaw 9 undergraduate students through
the design and construction of CASA 802. This included guided use of
digital and traditional fabrication tools.
Location: CASA 802 is an off-site fabricated Tiny House that can be located
on a variety of sites. Current possibilities include an existing communityowned mobile home park in Shelburne, VT, and a new housing development
in Randolph, VT. The goal is to have CASA 802 located in a place that
provides exposure to the affordable possibilities for sustainable, beautiful

Type of client: CASA 802 is focused on helping Vermonts low income
housing population.
Completion date: August 2016
Total construction cost: Approximately $30,000.00 materials + student and
professor labor and time. CASA 802 had multiple donations including a
$20,000 grant from an international bank, $7,000 window/door package
donated by a national window manufacturer and additional donations totaling
$4,700.00.
Environmental features: CASA 802 incorporates sustainability through the
use of locally sourced formaldehyde-free birch plywood, low voltage LED
lighting, locally harvested and milled white cedar siding and pine flooring.
High efficiency windows and doors, dense pack sustainable cellulose
insulated walls, a high efficiency heat pump, ventilation system and hot water
heater, and energy star appliances are used. Additional sustainable features
include: a low-flow shower fixture, zero VOC paint, Vermont Natural Coatings
low VOC finishes, and a reclaimed sap bucket for the bathroom sink.
