11. (a) (i)A steel rod of 25 mm in diameter is placed inside a copper tube of 30mm internal diameter
and 5 mm thickness at the ends are rigidly connected. The assembly is subjected to a compressive
load of 250 KN. Determine the stress induced in the steel rod and copper tube. Take the modulus
of elasticity of steel and copper as 200 Gpa and 80 Gpa respectively.

(ii)Find the total strain energy stored in a steel bar of diameter 50mm and length 300mm when it
is subjected to an axial load of 150 KN. Take modulus of elasticity of steel as 200 X 1003 Mpa (6)

13. (a) A beam of length 10m is simply supported beam carrying a two concentric load of 5KN each
at a distance of 3m and 7m from the left support and also uniform distribution of 1KN/m
between the point load. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams. Calculate the
maximum bending moment

(b) A point in a strained material is subjected to two mutually perpendicular tensile stress of
200Mpa and 100Mpa. Determine the intensities of normal, shear and resultant stresses on a plane
inclined at 300C with the axis of the minor tensile stress.

14. (a) Derive the expression for Closed coil helical spring subjected to axial load
(Or)

(b) A helical spring in which the mean diameter of the coil is 12 times the wire diameter is to be
designed to absorb 300 J energy with an extension of 150mm. The maximum shear stress is not to
exceed 140N/mm2. Determine the mean diameter of the spring, diameter of the wire which forms
the number of spring and the number of turns. Assume the modulus of rigidity of the material of
the spring as 80Kn/mm2

15. (a) A cylindrical shell 80 cm in diameter and 3 m long has a shell thickness of 1 cm. If the drum
is subjected to an internal pressure of 2.5 N/mm2, determine
(i) Change in diameter
(ii) change in length

(iii) change in volume


Assume modulus of elasticity and poisson's ratio of the material of the shell as 200Kn/m2 and
0.25 respectively.

(b) A timber beam of rectangular section is to support a load of 20KN uniformly distributed over
a span of 3.6m when the beam is simply supported if the depth of the section is to be twice the
breadth and the stress in the timber is not exceed 7N/mm2. find the breadth and depth of the
cross section. How will you modify the cross section of the beam if it carries a concentric load of
30KN placed at the mid span with the same ratio of breadth to depth.
