Point-to-Point Ethernet Service

Point-to-Point Ethernet Service, also referred to as a Virtual Leased Line (VLL), links two
locations together. This service provides the same functionality as a private line/leased line
service. The 7450 ESSs implementation of this service is called an Epipe service.
The 7450 ESS is able to provide a point-to-point Ethernet service that is:

Scalable supports thousands of customers per node

Flexible this service leverages IP/MPLS networks

Sometimes referred to as L1VPN since there is no MAC learning required

Evolution to IP/MPLS Based Ethernet Solutions

There are four main categories of services:

Private Line
ATM and Frame Relay
Transparent LAN
Internet access

Today, each type of service is carried over a separate network infrastructure.

A growing number of service applications are IP based and service providers want to expand
the basic forwarding and routing capabilities of best-effort IP with sophisticated service
handling.
The IETFs work on Layer 2 VPNs coupled with innovation from vendors such as Alcatel is
enabling the migration of existing Frame Relay and Transparent LAN Services to an IP/MPLS
infrastructure. This allows the consolidation of multiple infrastructures, with resultant cost
savings.

Ethernet Service Switches

The Ethernet Service Switch is designed to deliver Service Level Agreement ( SLA)-based
services. This requires designing all the features (QoS, accounting, troubleshooting tools)
around the concept of a service. Existing routers and switches were designed around interfaces
(ports). Current Ethernet switches provide effectively no QoS support at all and are based on
Best Effort traffic. Traditional Ethernet switches have a built-in ceiling of 4,000 VLANs that
prevents profitable metro-wide growth.
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is not designed for scalable metro Ethernet networks, it only
gets worse with scalability.
The 7450 ESS is a leading-edge Ethernet service switch is necessary to support the breadth
and depth of services and features to meet customer requirements.

Scalability through IP/MPLS encapsulation and tunneling, provides customer isolation

and supports tens of 1,000s of customers and services
Tiered services with differentiated priority for voice, video, data
MPLS eliminates the need for STP as a failover mechanism
Superior reliability-sub 50 ms restoration. integrates MPLS switching and traffic
engineering
Only edge switches need to know end user MAC addresses of
directly connected customers
Deliver point-to-point (VLL) and multipoint (VPLS) Ethernet services

Traditional Ethernet Switches vs Ethernet Service

Switches
Traditional Ethernet switches focus on Ethernet connectivity rather than services.
They are best-effort Ethernet services, which lack scalability and reliability.
Only basic QoS is offered affecting customer SLAs and they offer limited or no service level
management. Legacy Ethernet platforms are unsuited to carrier services, whereas the 7450
ESS is highly suited to this environment.

The change from traditional best-effort Ethernet switching to true service routing is a quantum
step it is a radical advancement that has required a complete rethinking of the product
architecture and design. The 7450 ESS has been developed as a service-based Ethernet switch
from the very beginning.

Service Troubleshooting and Monitoring

When troubleshooting complex operational problems, it is useful to be able to examine
customer packets as they traverse the network. Each Alcatel 7450 ESS is able to mirror packets
for a specific service to any destination point in the network, regardless of interface type or
speed.
It is possible to copy full packets, including all customer data or to slice the packets so that, for
example, only the headers are copied for analysis.
