Formulae----changing and substitution WORKSHEET

Substitution:
Substitution just means replacing the letters in a formula with the given values.

Examples:
Area of rectangle =

l w

(length x height)

Find the area of a rectangle with length 5cm and height(altitude) 7cm.
l h

Area =

(replace l

Area = 5 x 7

with 5 and h

with 7)

Area = 35cm2.

Area of a circle =

r2

Find the area of a circle with radius (r) 4cm.

Area =

(which means

is approximately 3.14.

r r ).

Area = 3.14 x 4 x 4 (replace with 3.14 and both rs with 4).

Area = 50.24cm2.

Rearranging:
Rearranging (sometimes called transposing) a formula involves reversing or undoing the
formula in order to change the subject.

Examples:

Make

the subject of the formula.

y=x3

(at the moment

y +3=x
= 0))

x= y +3

is the subject).

(add 3 to each side to leave

(now

is the subject of the formula)

Make a the subject of the formula.

v =u+at

(v is the subject of the formula)

on its own (note: -3 +3

v u=at

(subtract u from each side)

vu
=a
t

(divide each side by t to make a the subject)

a=

vu
t

(we can re-write it with a on the LHS)

Some Useful Formulae:

1
b h
base x height
2

Area of triangle =

Circumference of circle = d
Area of circle =

(where d = diameter)

r2

Volume of cylinder

Volume of sphere

(where r = radius).

V = r 2 h

V =

(where r = radius, h = height).

4 3
r
3

(where r = radius).

F=ma

(where F = force, m = mass, a = acceleration).

v =u+at
(where u = initial speed, v = final speed,
2

v =u + 2as

a = acceleration, t = time, s = distance travelled).

1
S=ut + a t 2
2

Kinetic Energy

1
E= m v 2
2

The period T of a pendulum =

(where m = mass and v = speed).

l
g

(where l = length of pendulum

and g = acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s2)).
