INTRODUCTION
The slump test is perhaps the most widely used because of the simplicity of the apparatus
required and the test procedure. The slump test indicates the behaviour of a compacted
concrete cone under the action of gravitational forces. The slump test is a practical means of
measuring the workability.Changes in the value of slump obtained during a job may indicates
change in materials,in the water content or in the proportions of mix,so it is useful in
controlling the quality of the concrete produced.
The test carried out with a mould called the slump cone. The slump cone is placed on a
horizontal and non-absorbent surface and filled in three equal layers of fresh concrete, each
layer being tamped 25 times with a standard tamping rod.The top layer is struck off level and
the mould is lifted vertically without disturbing the concrete cone. The subsidence of concrete
in milimeters istermed the slump. After the test, slumps evenly all around is called true
slump. In the case of very lean concrete, one half of the cone may slide down the other which
called a shear slump or it may collapse in case of very wet concretes. The slmp test is
essentially a measure of consistency or the wetness of the mix.

THEORY
Concrete is a mixture of sand and rock or similar or inert material (aggregates) held together
by a cementing material.Usually the cementing material is Portland cement, but sometimes
binders such as asphalt or gypsum are used,in which case the concrete may be called
asphaltic concrete or gypsum concrete.
Properties of concrete are governed not only by the properties of its ingredients
(cement, water, sand and coarse aggregates) but also, to a great extent,by the relative
proportions of these ingredients. The proportions must be selected a to produce a concrete
mixture of desired workability, strength, durability and economy.
The most common aggregates are gravel and crushed stone, although cinders,blast-furnace
slag, burned shale, crushed brick,or other materials may be used because of availability,or to
alter such characteristics of the concrete such as workability, density, appearance or
conductivity of heat sound.
Slump is a relative measurement in concrete consistency. It is not an indicator of quality of the
material. The slump of a mix with the same aggregate, cement and water can vary significantly
by adding an admixture. The admixture does not reduce the quality of the material.

SAFETY AND HEALTH

It is the responsibility of the user of this test method to establish appropriate safety and health
practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Prior to
handling, testing or disposing of any materials, testers must be knowledgeable about safe
laboratory practices, hazards and exposure, chemical procurement and storage, and personal
protective apparel and equipment.

Work instructions, work health and safety (WHS) requirements and

other information relevant to the work are identified, confirmed and

applied for planning and preparation purposes.

Tools and equipment consistent with the job are selected, checked for

serviceability, and faults are rectified and reported before work begins.
Material quantity requirements are identified, calculated and confirmed

according to plans, specifications and quality requirements .

Environmental requirements are identified for the project according to

environmental plans and regulatory obligations.

Standard slumping cone is cleaned in preparation for slump testing.
Sample of concrete is taken, using the correct sampling procedure,

directly from the delivery trucks initial discharge.

Slumping cone is filled and compacted according to standard slump

testing procedures.
Slumping cone is levelled off and surplus concrete is cleared from steel

plate and slumping cone.

Slumping cone is levelled off and surplus concrete is cleared from steel

plate and slumping cone.

Sample is measured for conformity with tolerance levels and

resampling is conducted if sample is outside tolerance.

Collapsed or sheared samples are recorded.
Work area is cleared and materials disposed of, reused or recycled
according to regulations, codes of practice and job specification.

Tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored

according to manufacturer recommendations and standard work

practices.
Work completion procedures are applied and relevant personnel
notified that work is finished.

DISCUSSION
1. What is the ideal value of slump?
In case of a dry sample, slump will be in the range of 25-50 mm that is 1-2 inches.
But in case of a wet concrete, the slump may vary from 150-175 mm or say 6-7
inches. So the value of slump is specifically mentioned along the mix design and thus
it should be checked as per your location.
Slump depends on many factors like properties of concrete ingredients aggregates
etc. Also temperature has its effect on slump value. So all these parameters should be
kept in mind when deciding the ideal slump.
2. How does a superplasticizer effect the slump of concrete?
Value of Slump can be increased by the addition of chemical admixtures like midrange or high-range water reducing agents (super-plasticizers) without changing the
water/cement ratio.

3. How much time one should take to raise the cone?

Once the cone is filled and topped off [ excessive concrete from top is cleared ] raise
the cone within 5-10 seconds.

4. What are the dimensions of the cone used in Slump Test?

The dimensions are:
Top diameter- 10cm
Bottom diameter- 20cm
Height- 30cm

CONCLUSION
When a slump is big then water/cement ratio is big and the compressive strength of concrete
is slow.A lower water-cement ratio leads to higher strength.Larger aggregates increase the
cost effectiveness of concrete without decreasing its strength since they have a relatively
smaller surface area reuiring less concrete to coat.Cement is the glue that binds concrete
together.Increasing the proportion of cement in concrete mixture will increase its strength but
it will also make the mixture stiffer and more difficult to work with.

METHOD/PROCEDURE

1.The internal surface of the mould was throughly cleaned and placed on the
smooth,horizontal,rigid and non-absorbent surface.
2.To obtain represntative sample, took samples from two or more regular
intervals throughout the discharge of the mixer.Do not take samples at the
beginning or the end of discharge.

3.Dampen inside of cone and placed it on a smooth,moist,non-absorbent,level

surface large enough to acommodate both the slumped concrete and slump
cone.Stand or foot pieces throughout the test procedure to hold the cone firmly.
4.Filled cone fulled approximately in 1/3 in height of the mould tamped each
layer 25 times using tamping rod.
5.Filled cone 2/3 full by volume.Rod this layer 25 times with rod penetrating
into but not through first layer.Distribute rodding evenly over the entire cross
section of layer.
6.Filled cone to overflowing.Rod this layer 25 times with rod penetrating into
but not through first layer.Distribute rodding evenly over the entire cross section
of layer.
7.Remove the excess concrete from the top of the cone.Cleaned overflow from
base of cone.
8.Immediately lifted the cone vertically with slow, even motion.Do not jar the
concrete or tilt the cone during this process.Invert the withdrawn cone, and
placed next to but not touched the slumped concrete.
9.Lay a straight edge across the top of the slump cone.Measured the amount of
slump in inches from bottom of the straight edge to the top of the slumped
concrete at a point over the original center of the base. The slump operation shall
be completed in a maximum elapsed time of 2 minutes.Discard concrete.Do
not use in any other tests.
