1910 J

Classical was one of the biggest music genres in 1910

It was considered the most traditional, and it was what the majority of
people were most comfortable with.
Classical music usually consists of many different instruments with a smooth
melody.
One popular classical artist in the 1910s was Joseph Canteloupe
One of his more popular songs or compositions was titled Colloque
sentimental

1920 C

1920s was beginning of modern music

Popular genre were dance, jazz and blues.
Of those we will focus on blues.
Popular musicians were Mamie Smith, Blind Lemon
Jefferson and Jimmie Rodgers.
Of those we will focus on Blind Lemon Jefferson.
Blues was created in southern US in end of 19th century.
It is usually sort of melodramatic, and lots of blues
songs are about longing for a better life.
Instruments used in blues are commonly saxophone,
harmonica and keyboard.
Blind Lemon Jefferson was a popular blues artist. His
most famous song was Matchbox Blues, which was re
recorded by the Beatles 30 years later.
His songs were usually sort of sad, and talked about
love and loss.
In 1920s, people used a phonograph to listen to music.
It uses wax cylinders to play back recordings.

1930 Jazz and Swing

In 1930 jazz was really popular.

Not a lot of different music between 1930-1933 because
great depression
In 1933 record sales slowly went uphill again.
The most popular female artist was Ella Fitzgerald.

1940 J

Electric Blues was one of the most popular styles of 1940

Distinguished by the use of electric amplification for
musical instruments
Many electric instruments used
John Lee Hooker was a popular electric blues artist in
the 1940s.
His most popular song was boom boom.
Tbone Walker was also a popular artist of the genre, and
his most popular song was Call it Stormy Monday

Rhythm and blues originated from jazz and boogie

It was a new kind of music of its time
The songs and bands playing this music usually consist of
piano, guitar, saxophone, bass, drums, and sometimes
vocals
Several british rock bands were inspired by this genre
such as the Rolling Stones and The Animals.
One of the most popular R&B artists of the 1950s was Joe
Liggins

1960- Rock

Examples: folk rock, hard rock, country rock, boogie
rock, art rock, space rock, roots rock, pop rock, garage
rock, glam rock, southern rock, funk rock, blues rock and
more.

In the 1970s there was lots of musical variety

In 1970s some popular styles were hard rock, soul and
disco.
Of those we will focus on hard rock. .
Some popular bands and musicians in the 70s were Led
Zeppelin, Queen and David Bowie.
Of those we will focus on Led Zeppelin.
Led Zeppelin made many very famous songs, most notably
Stairway to Heaven.
They had a guitarist, bassist, drummer and singer. Their
songs usually shifted in speed, pace and volume.
People mostly used vinyl records back then and almost
everybody has a record player.
Hard rock was usually very loud, often fast-paced music.
Usually has meaning behind the lyrics.
Common instruments in hard rock music are drums, electric
guitar and bass.

1980 Metal

Death metal, black metal, rap metal, extreme metal,
thrash metal, power metal, glam metal, drone metal,
groove metal and more

Popular music genres were dance-pop, neo-soul and

grunge.
Of those we will focus on neo-soul.
Popular artists and groups were Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Nirvana and Green Day,
Of those we will focus on Green Day.
Neo-soul is a combination of soul and R&B.
Instruments used in neo-soul are usually guitar,
electric piano, drums and bass.
Neo-soul songs are usually about things such as love
and politics.
Green Day is a punk rock band formed in 1986.
They sing about controversial things
They currently have a lead singer, bassist and
drummer.

2000 C

In 2000s alternative rock and post-grunge were

popular, but hip-hop was by far the most popular.
Some popular artists were (and still are) Jay Z,
Alicia Keys and Britney Spears.
Of those we will focus on Alicia Keys.
Alicia Keys is a hip-hop artist. Her songs
usually have meaningful lyrics, and she has a
wide vocal range which also made her popular.
Hip-hop is basically rapping with electronic
background music.
Hip-hop uses instruments and machines like drum
machines, synthesizers and turntables.
In the 2000s and now, people sometimes stream
music, but some also downloaded music onto their
phones or Ipods.

A very popular genre in 2010 was rap

Rap is when somebody speaks very fast and usually in rhyme with
a rhythmic beat in the background
A popular rap artist is Kanye West
His most popular song is Famous
In 2010, people stream music and listen to music on their phones
or Youtube.
