Authors Note
The purpose of this book is to educate young people about P.T Barnum. P.T Barnum
was a businessman and politician during his era. He was famous for promoting hoaxes
at his museum and circus. It is important to learn about P.T Barnum because he
helped to entertain Americans during the Reconstruction Era.
P.T Barnum was born on July 5th, 1810 in Bethel, Connecticut. As a child he showed
signs of being a businessman. At the age of 12, he was selling lottery tickets and
cherry rum to soldiers.

As a young man he moved to New York City . There he pursued business such as
newspaper publishing and boarding people. P.T barnum finally found his footing
promoting and entertaining Americans.

One of his famous hoaxes was an old slave who he claim to be 161 years and the
former nurse of George Washington. When the slave Joice Heth died, it turned out
that she was around 80 years of age. During this hoax, he toured and made average of
$1,ooo a week.

P.T barnum closed down his Museum after it burned down in a fire in 1868. He then
opened a circus called The greatest show on earth.With the circus he toured all
around the world.One of the most famous performers for the circus was Jumbo the
elephant. Jumbo was an african elephant; which Barnum purchased from a london
zoo for $10,000 ($246 thousand today).
During his life, P.T Barnum was not only a businessman but was also a politician. P.T
Barnum served as mayor of Bridgeport , Connecticut. Not only was he the mayor but
was also a House of Representative for Connecticut.
Barnum suffered a stroke in 1890 and died on April 7,1891.He was dislike by some,
but loved by many.
