Highway 16 Lace Cowl

Disclaimer
This pattern may not give you every single stitch
and every single step. It is a presentation of design
work and should be read as a guide only.
Description
A lace cowl in simple eyelet lace. The decreasing of the
stitch count creates a funnel shape which keeps ears,
head and chin snug. Cowl is worked from the shoulders
upwards. Total weight is 100gm so will show off small
runs of special yarns to great effect. The edging forms
naturally as part of the pattern.

Minimum 100gm sport-weight yarn. A

4ply with halo-effect was used in the
photograph. To show off the variegated
effect of dark wool, I used hand-spun
Gotland.

Needles
3.5 mm 60cm circular needles. Gauge
sample can be worked on straight
needles.

Miscellaneous
Stitch markers, row counter,wool sewing
needle, blocking pins.

Gauge
22 stitches over 22 rows gives a 10cm
square in eyelet stitch. Yarn at a density
less than fingering or 4ply mill-spun will
result in a smaller cowl.

Each layer of the rhomboid shape is made up of

three repeats of the corresponding rounds.
Top layer is three repeats of rounds 15-20
Round 14 is a decrease round.
Middle layer is three repeats of rounds 8-13
Round 7 is a decrease round.
Bottom layer is three repeats of rounds 1-6

Cast on 260 stitches using 3.25mm circular needles. Leave the tail as your row start-end marker. Try to
keep your stitches from twisting on this row. They will settle once knitted.
Round 1: Ssk x3, (yo,k2)x2, yo, k6, (yo, k2)x2, yo, k2tog x3. Repeat this 10 times (260 sts).
Use stitch-markers to separate the pattern-repeatssaves constant counting.
Round 2: Knit.
Round 3: Ssk x 3, k, (yo, k2) x2, yo, k4, (yo, k2) x2, yo, k, k2tog x3. Repeat this 10 times (260 sts).
Round 4: Knit.
Round 5: Ssk x 3, (k2, yo) x6, k2, k2tog x3. Repeat this 10 times (260 sts).
Round 6: Knit.
Repeat rounds 1-6 two more times.
A decrease in stitch count will now occur. It is important to keep the middle six stitches as knit stitches
in row 8. This maintains the lace pattern structure.
Round 7: Ssk x4, k10, k2tog x4.Repeat this 10 times (180 sts).
You have now decreased the stitch-count of the lace pattern from 26 18 per pattern-repeat.
Round 8: Ssk x 2, yo, k2, yo, k6, yo, k2, yo, k2tog x2. Repeat this 10 times (180 sts).
Round 9: Knit.
Round 10: Ssk x2, k, yo, k2, yo, k4, yo, k2, yo, k, k2tog x2. Repeat this 10 times (180 sts).
Round 11: Knit.
Round 12: Ssk x2, (k2, yo) x4, k2, k2tog x2. Repeat this 10 times (180 sts).
Round 13: Knit.
Repeat rounds 8-13 two more times. A decrease in stitch-count will now occur. It is important to keep
the middle six stitches of row 14 as knit stitches. This maintains the lace pattern structure.
Round 14: Ssk x 2, k6, k2tog x4. (14 sts). Repeat this 10 times (140 sts).

You have now decreased the stitch-count of the lace pattern from 18 to 14.
Round 15: Ssk, yo, k10, yo, k2tog. Repeat this 10 times (140 sts).
Round 16: Knit.
Round 17: Ssk, k, yo, k8, yo, k, k2tog. Repeat this 10 times (140 sts).
Round 18: Knit.
Round 19: Ssk, k2, yo, k6, yo, k2, k2tog. Repeat this 10 times (140 sts).
Repeat rounds 12-20 two more times.
Round 20: Knit loosely (you are preparing to cast-off).
Round 21: Using your favourite cast-off method, cast-off loosely. Leave the tail loose until after blocking.
Do not tie a knot in the tail.

Important Note on Lace Chart

Start at the bottom right hand corner using the symbols for stitch instructions. The chart represents ONE
pattern-repeat; you will be repeating the sequence TEN times. You will also be adding length by
repeating the pattern over three sequences.

Hand- wash gently in a plant-based fibre wash. Rinse and squeeze out excess water. Dry
flat in a warm spot on a thickly-folded towel and block firmly using T-pins. Dont be
scared of pulling the wet yarn into a funnel shape and pull the pointed edges out at the
bottom and top. Use a t-pin for each point. Once dry, thread the start and tail ends back

into the knitted fabric and darn into the reverse side using a wool sewing needle. Cut
tails once secure.
