Course Objectives:
To impart knowledge of representation of power system & Per Unit system, to analyze the symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in the power system, to
understand short circuit currents and their characteristics and composition, to learn different phenomenon of Power system, to study single line diagrams,
Identify the characteristics of different types of electrical faults, plot characteristics of different relays and understand their working.

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I : Representation of Power System Components


Synchronous machines, Transformers, Transmission lines, one line diagram, Impedance and reactance diagram, per
unit System Advantage of per unit computation.
Electrical Design of Transmission Line:
Design consideration of EHV transmission lines, choice ,Design consideration of EHV
transmission lines, choice of voltage, number of circuits, conductor configuration, insulation
design, selection of ground wires.
Module II: Symmetrical components
Symmetrical Components of unbalanced phasors, power in terms of symmetrical components, sequence impedances
and sequence networks.
Module III : Symmetrical fault analysis
Transient in R-L series circuit, calculation of 3-phase short circuit current and reactance of synchronous machine,
internal voltage of loaded machines under transient conditions
Module IV : Unsymmetrical faults

Analysis of single line to ground fault, line-to-line fault and Double Line to ground fault on an unloaded generators and
power system network with and without fault impedance
Module V:
Neutral grounding:
Necessity of neutral grounding, various methods of neutral grounding, earthing transformer,
grounding practices

After completing the Power System I course, students will be able to
1. Illustrate power system using per unit terminology
2. Identify and analyze different types of faults in power system
3. Perform short circuit studies for different faults
4. Understand the phenomenon of corona and its effects.
5. Construct experimentally the transmission line model.
6. Demonstrate practically different types of faults in power system

1. To study Single Line Diagram of 11 KV substation
2. To perform No-Load Test and Ferranti Effect on Transmission Line
3. To perform Load Test and calculate regulation, efficiency of Transmission Line
4. To determine the Transmission line Constant (ABCD) of given line
5. To study the behaviour of Transmission line for LG fault
6. To study the behaviour of Transmission line for LL fault
7. To study the behaviour of Transmission line for LLG fault
8. To study the behaviour of Transmission line for LLL fault
Open ended Experiment
1. Analyze the behavior of 3 Phase transmission line shown below under different fault conditions using simulation software and very the results by

physically implementing the parameters.
