IPWeek2017 Oil Rig Design Competition Rules

A. Description
IPWeek2017 Oil Rig Design Competition will encourage the students to be creative by blending
the power of knowledge and design in engineering to overcome the problem with innovation
related to offshore oil exploitation. The students are required to create a model of semisubmersible oil rig to approach a real oil rig design in field by considering several factors, such
as the model effectiveness, the safety, and the budget plan. Blueprints will be selected, and
afterwards the rig will be tested through Weight and Load Test, Buoyancy Test, and Presentation
to our Experts.

B. Theme
Creation and Innovation to Exploit Oil and Gas with Low Budget in Offshore Oil Rig, Lets Facing
a Cheap Oil Era

C. Topic

We are now probably facing a new era, Cheap Oil Era. Many kinds of alternative energy are
finding their way to be more economical. So, dont hope that oil and gas price will rise quickly
above $100 per barrel so Offshore Oil Rig will be economical, but we must become creative and
innovative to make an efficient Offshore Oil Rig.
In Indonesia, theres lot of potential oil and gas reserves still trapped under the sea, such as,
Natuna Field and Masela Field. Professionals predict that possibly there are more oil and gas
reserves in east of Indonesia which have not been explored recently. Cost will be the main
problem because of the depth of the sea which is categorized as deep sea. Participants need to
gather ideas to design the best Oil Rig Design without forget thinking about economic issue. In
the end, oil and gas potential which trapped under the deep ocean still can be exploited in a
creative and innovative way.
