Message to Parents
Wakeman has a membership tracking system that requires all members to bring their membership cards every time
they enter the club. Members swipe their cards through a scanner when they come into the building and when they
leave the building. This system will allow staff to track attendance and to alert the staff as to who is in the Club. This
eliminates non-members from using the Club with the emphasis on security in our daily lives. It is very important for
parents to stress to their child the importance of presenting their card when entering the Club.
PARKING LOT
The safety of all our members, both inside and outside the club is of vital importance. As our membership increases
and our programs continue to grow, safety in the parking lot is an ongoing issue. We ask that you follow the one-way
signs once you pull into the parking lot. If you are parking we ask that you are cautious when pulling in and especially
when pulling out, and PLEASE refrain from using cell phones while driving on Club property. Also, state law prohibits
any use of the handicap spot without a valid handicap marker. This includes dropping your child off. Many times there
are programs ending when others begin and at times the parking lot does become congested. We ask all our drivers
to be aware for the safety of our members.
Wakeman has made great use of our website this past year. Please continue to check the website for open gym
times, league schedules, announcements, program descriptions, registration dates and cancellations. There is also
an opportunity for feedback from our members through email.
SENIOR STAFF
Dedicated adults are needed to work part-time during week nights and weekends. Senior Staff are responsible
for supervising club members and programs, as well as assisting full-time staff with program set up, clean up and
administrative tasks. If you are interested, please contact Ruben at 259-4805 or Ruben@wakemanclub.org.
Wakeman Commitment
A message from Clare Mahoney, Rich Lee, Ruben Goodwin, Maria Cimina, and Geoff Baranger
Countless hours are put into the program planning process: organizing activities, scheduling gyms and field times,
recruiting referees, volunteer coaches and instructors. Before registering for any program, please be certain that your
child is prepared to attend classes, practices, games or clinics unless, of course, he or she is injured, ill or academically
ineligible. The Wakeman staff has made a commitment to provide each youngster with the best possible Club experience.
We ask that our members make the same commitment in return.

Wakeman Values
The following is a list of qualities that are important to leading a happy, fulfilling life.
We want our members to be good people. We want our members to be:
Honest
The most important value and you all know what it means.
But are you strong enough to live without lying?
The Wakeman Staff thinks you are.
n
Sensitive to the Feelings of Others
Wakeman is a place where everyone should feel comfortable and included.
If someone is not playing, ask them to join your game.
No one is good at everything.
Do not make anyone feel bad about themselves.
Wakeman wants its members to be strong and confident.
n
Willing to Help
Wakeman is proud of our members and their willingness to volunteer and donate to those less
fortunate. Lets not lose that attitude with each other. If another Wakeman member needs help
consider it your duty to see to their needs.
n
Sportsmen and Sportswomen
When the other team wins by two or twenty do not pout or act mad. Celebrate the fact that you are
part of the game and run over to congratulate the winners. The same goes for you when you win a game.
Remember what it feels like to lose. Your opponents are feeling that way right now.
n
Trustworthy
If you say you are going to do something, make sure it gets done.
And if you are asked not to do something, dont do it.
n
Patient
Relax and give things time. The staff at Wakeman is here to serve you.
If they are asking you to wait you can be sure it is for a good reason.
n
Willing to Try New Things
The only way you are going to learn is to try.
n
Respect
Of Yourself, Of Your Family, Of Your Club.
Program Registration
Many of Wakemans programs have been known to fill up right away as space is limited. ALL registrations are taken
on a first come, first serve basis.
THE THREE WAYS TO REGISTER FOR MOST WAKEMAN PROGRAMS ARE:
1. ONLINE: See page 2 for additional information or consult our website.
2. IN PERSON: You can come down to the club on the day of registration (indicated on pages 4 and 5 of this book)
at 10:00am (the Club opens at 9:00am). At this time you will sign your member up, pay for the program and
receive the necessary information.
3.
BY PHONE: Your child must be a current member before you may register by phone!
You can call the Club on the day of registration (indicated on the inside front cover of this book) starting at
10:00am and place your childs name on the program reservation list. You then have 48 hours to come in and pay
for the program and receive the program guidelines.
n Your child must have a current membership before you may register by phone!
.
We understand that there are instances where participants would be entitled to a refund of fees paid. No matter how
diligently one plans their familys and childrens activities, situations may arise that require a change. However, as
an organization, we must set guidelines that allow us to plan for our seasonal needs such as ordering equipment,
supplies and assignment of officials. All of these activities have a cost associated with them. For these reasons we
have developed the following refund policy.
Full Refund
A full refund (less a $10 administrative charge) will be given if a participant attends no practices, class, games or tryout sessions and as long as jerseys, t shirts or gear have not been ordered for your child. The Club must receive notice
of intent to withdraw ten (10) days before the first scheduled session. Please allow 30 days for processing refund
checks. *Membership is non-refundable and not transferable.
Between 0-3 sessions, practices, or classes attended, we allow a partial Club credit (less a $10 administrative charge).
The pro-rated Club credit will be based on participation, individual circumstances and whether or not jerseys, t shirts
or gear have been ordered for your child and is at the discretion of the staff. Club credits are good for one year from
date of issuance. *Membership is non-refundable and not transferable.
No Refund
If three practices, sessions, classes or one regular season game has elapsed, then no refund will be given. If a participant is dismissed at any time for disciplinary reasons then no refund will be given.
A full refund (less the $50 deposit) will be issued if Wakeman receives in writing your intent to withdraw before the
final camp balances are due (May 18, 2017). No refunds or credits will be issued after this date unless it is an illness or
injury in which case a doctors note must be provided. The Club Unit Director must receive notice of intent to withdraw
by email. Please allow 30 days for processing refund checks. *Membership is non-refundable and not transferable.
We hope this policy will be viewed as reasonable and necessary to allow us to support our programs in an organized
fashion.

a game room, a dance studio and a technology room. Outside there is a grass play space along with access to the Cal
Ripken multi-purpose field, which is located one-quarter of mile away.
Wakemans facilities are open daily throughout the school year and on weekends and school holidays. The membership fee entitles all members to use either Clubs facilities on a daily basis. Bus transportation is provided from 14
Fairfield Schools to the Southport Clubhouse and 2 schools to the Smilow Burroughs Clubhouse daily. Membership
also provides access to over 100 fee-based programs, leagues and classes including basketball, lacrosse, other sports

Volunteer one hour a week or more and youll make a difference in a childs life. Very likely, theyll also make a
difference in your own life! More than 130 teens and eight adult chaperones chose to make a difference last year and
overwhelmingly felt the impact on their own life as well. Volunteer hours are tracked by Wakeman staff. Teens frequently
use their hours toward college applications, Fairfield Prep Christian Service, National Honor Society,
High School Key Club and other programs.
Mentors: 9th-12th graders can volunteer as Mentors to students at McKinley. Preference is given to volunteers able
to commit for a minimum of two seasons of the school year (fall, winter or spring). Mentoring begins in mid-September,
but new Mentors may be accepted anytime. Mentors are also expected to attend several trainings and mentoring
events as needed during the year.
Smart Moves Mentoring Program: 9th-12th graders are matched 1 on 1 with 2nd grade students. This program
is held weekly on Wednesdays 3:10-4:40. Each week includes homework time, board games and a life skills lesson
such as friendships, self-esteem, bullying, pillars of character and more.
Great Futures Mentoring Program: 10th-12th graders are matched 1 on 1 with 3rd-5th graders. Mentors can
volunteer Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays 2:45-4:45, but must attend the same day weekly. Mentors spend 30
minutes in the classroom learning about what their student Mentee is studying, assignments and how they interact
with classmates and teachers. Remaining time is spent together and with other mentors and mentees for homework
and projects, games and sports, crafts and hanging out. Preference is given to juniors and seniors, although sophomores may be accepted too.
Big Buddy (McKinley Outreach): 10th-12th grade Big Buddies are paired 1 on 1 with a younger member with special
needs so they can be active in Wakeman athletic/fitness classes at McKinley. Big Buddies learns about their members
needs/interests and work with staff to ensure each class is full of fun, friendships and learning. Time/day or week is
flexible based on schedule of volunteer and member, but typically Monday, Wednesday or Thursday 3:15-4:45.
The majority of volunteers are interviewed between in summer and early fall and assigned positions in the fall,
but additional limited positions may be available during the school year.
Contact Director of Outreach, Outcomes & Opportunities Tim Cepetelli Tim@wakemanclub.org.
Pick up a Teen Volunteer Profile from the Southport Clubhouse or McKinley School.
Sign up to attend a 60 minute Interview/Orientation session. Sessions are announced throughout the year
on our website.
Wakeman seeks mature, self-motivated role models so parents must not contact Tim on their teens behalf.
All volunteers are interviewed to match with students and programs based on compatibility of interests, personalities
and experiences. Attending an interview/orientation does not guarantee a placement and all applicants may not be
accepted for a program. Training is given before volunteers begin. Qualified adult supervision is present to assist teen
volunteers at all times.
For more information about volunteering with the McKinley Outreach or the clubhouses, contact Tim Cepetelli at
Tim@wakemanclub.org.
