SYNOPSIS
Gibson Bonifacio stopped speaking when he was a child.
Now twenty years old, he is back in Manila for Christmas.
While always festive in the Philippines, for his family it is
tinged with sadness, marking the anniversary of his twin
brothers death. Against the backdrop of the vibrant local
music scene, his childhood best friend tries to reconnect with
him, while he unexpectedly finds a chance at his first, real
romantic relationship.
Gibson reconsiders and redefines his relationship with his
family, with himself, even with his dead brother: the only
person he talks to.

NEWS

Renowned commercial and music video director Marie Jamora finally presents her long-awaited feature-length film debut with ANG NAWAWALA (WHAT
ISNT THERE). A project almost ten years in development, the film is composed of images, characters, scenes and dialogue Jamora has been collecting
since college and her years studying Film at Columbia University. She assembled a cast of prodigious talents, most from a series of open auditions and
Cinemalaya casting sessions, fortunately getting her first choice performer for each major role. She initially thought her twin leads would be one actor
playing both roles, but was blown away when the Roco twins came in to audition for her. She thought it would never have been possible to find amazing
twin actors in the exact age range she needed. Her crew consists of trusted friends and professionals she has worked with in the past, including Hong
Kong cinematographer Ming Kai Leung (her classmate at Columbia). This is my dream film, said the director, one Ive been thinking about for years,
and there is nothing better than being able to make it with some of my best friends, who also happen to be damn good at their jobs. I have never been
so happy on a set in my life.
They enjoyed a successful run during Julys Cinemalaya Film Festival, with positive word of mouth created by fans, receiving favorable reviews, and
almost every screening selling out as a result. At the close of the festival the film took home two prizes: Best Original Musical Score and Audience
Choice (New Breed), an award determined by votes from the Cinemalaya audience. No mean feat, considering this was the best-attended Cinemalaya
yet, with a 12% increase in viewership over last year. Over the span of the festival the hashtag #AngNawawala was found to be trending on Twitter
twice. The films afterparty ANG NAGWAWALA (roughly translated to: GOING WILD) was also a massive hit with a thousand people in attendance, with
all the bands on the soundtrack performing, sometimes with the films actors onstage to dance along.
At the beginning of 2013, Rappler.com, an extremely popular Filipino news and social site) held their Social Media Awards 2012 on Facebook, having
the masses vote for their favorite TV shows, films, musicians, and celebrities. WHAT ISN T THERE was on a list along with The Avengers, Argo, The Dark
Knight Rises, and Twilight, and, based on the number of votes, WHAT ISNT THERE won Best Film of 2012. The film was also named one of the 12
Must See Pictures of the Year by Clickthecity.com, the Filipino version of Time Out NY, and one of the Top 20 Pinoy Films of 2012 by Twitch writer,
Oggs Cruz on another popular site and TV network, ABS-CBN.com. Our leading lady, Annicka Dolonius, has also been named one of the 10 Best Screen
Actresses of 2012 by the No.1 business daily newspaper in the Philippines, The Business Mirror.
The 2013 SLAMDANCE Film Festival will be the international premiere of the film. The team is very excited as it is the only Asian full-length film in the
festival, and it is the first Filipino film that has ever been in competition for the Slamdance Narrative Feature Competition.

DIRECTORS STATEMENT

Our third world country is known for poverty-centric films, but I have always wanted to make a Filipino coming-of-age-slash-suburban family drama
featuring upper middle class characters. I wanted to tell a modern story located in Manila and set against the backdrop of the indie music scene.
We wanted to share something personal with the audience -- to showcase a different side of our hometown, inhabited with characters that arent
usually seen in contemporary Philippine cinema. I am a filmmaker that has grown up watching American TV shows and movies, and this is the
film that I have been dreaming to make for more than ten years.
The idea about twins, identity, and selective mutism is something I have been writing about since my senior year in college. I even workshopped a
draft at Columbia film school in 2003. And yet, I only felt ready to undertake the film after a friends drunken dare at a New Years Party in 2011.
Ang Nawawala has two definitions when translated into English. On one hand, it could mean, Whats Missing, and on the other hand, it could
also mean, The Lost, and both speak of the emotional states of all the people in our film. My co-writer, Ramon De Veyra, came up with both
Filipino and English titles, and I immediately connected to What Isnt There because I felt it encompassed everything we were trying to achieve.
Before he passed away, one of our countrys greatest film critics, Alexis Tioseco, stated it best when he published his Wishlist for Philippine
Cinema:
I wish someone, anyone, would make a good, thought-provoking film about the Philippine upper-class.

The Letter I Would Love to Read to You in Person, Rogue Magazine, July 2008

Ramon and I were friends with Alexis, who died much too early in his life, and who adored Filipino films. I am not sure if we made the particular
motion picture he speaks of, but we certainly tried our best.

REVIEWS & ACCOLADES

14

It is paced like a rock star, relaxed when it needs to be but quick at the edges.
The visuals are absolutely lovely, revealing an angle of the city that is patterned, orderly, the
absolute opposite of the maniacal chaos of the various slums and squatters' colonies that have
been featured tirelessly in other films about Manila.
Marie Jamora and co-writer Ramon De Veyra has carefully conjured a coming-of-age tale that
withdraws from the traditions of the genre. Instead of the raging hormones of burgeoning
maturity or the delightful impulses of first love, ANG NAWAWALA (WHAT ISNT THERE) maps the
redemption of lost years spent making sense of a childhood trauma that resulted in the most
enduring of heartaches.

"This is what sets this movie apart, its ability to crawl under your skin and stay with
you long after the credits have ended. There is no enemy here. There is no real hero.
What we dont see, or in this case hear, onscreen, we end up feeling for ourselves."

"ANG NAWAWALA (WHAT ISNT THERE) tells a small story and lets it grow into something wonderful.
It is a movie made up of the small moments that mean so much, the pregnant pauses and
meaningful silences that fill up so much of our lives. It is all strangely unfamiliar. Cinema tends to
favor confession and confrontation, where all the crying and screaming can happen. ANG NAWAWALA
takes place after all that is done, and people are just trying to cope. It pulls this off with style to
spare, pointing at a world full of strange wonder, good music, and loves yet to be found."
It is Dawn Zuluetas silence that is most arresting in this picture. She wears the history of her
character on her face, making it apparent in every single scene just how much shes holding in. Its
a stunning performance.

www.clickthecity.com

For a film that took a decade to make, Miss Marie Jamora, it was worth the wait.
The film also demonstrates that sometimes, amid the beautiful music, or underneath the
silence of unspeakable emotions, we find peace in what it isnt there. But if we see, listen,
and feel close enough, we will find happiness in what is before us.

THE MANILA BULLETIN

"It's heartfelt and stylish, and unabashedly the zeitgeist film for the members of this post-punk,
post-slacker, post-everything generation who sufferlike all of usthe irony, the heartbreak, the
long process of growing up and letting go."
Dominic Roco is a revelation as the damaged boy, the left behind twin, compelling without having to
say anything.
This is Dawn Zulueta's best work ever.

A story that makes for one of the most memorable coming-of-age stories to come out of the
local independent film pool.

This pictures unique charm clearly lies in its subtle and fleeting moments.
The entire film is actually a mixtape of lifes youthful moments. This cathartic piece
of cinema comes to terms with the biting realities that help shape people.

BUSINESS WORLD
www.bworldonline.com

Every shot appears to have been colored and designed in the same manner with which we revisit
our memories: wherein evocative objects come to the fore and images shift between
hypersaturated and diluted color schemes.
[Jamoras] work onscreen clearly represents her strong grasp of the all-inclusive and unbounded
nature of art, translating this generations inundation with media and commoditized culture into
something coherent and sincere.

Among the standout portrayals by relative newcomers that caught our attention at the 2012
Cinemalaya Fest was the confident performance turned in by Annicka Dolonius in Marie Jamoras
ANG NAWAWALA. Dominic Roco did well in his protagonist role, but it was Annicka who made a
deeper impression with her quietly insightful and completely believable portrayal.

ANG NAWAWALA (WHAT ISNT THERE) is easily a film that speaks about the things that go
unsaid among friends, among family, and among lovers. At the same time, it talks about
the loudness of life, of love and the connections that ring through our ears long after the
original sound has faded away.
ANG NAWAWALAis a film that is anything but silent. Instead, there is a resounding
loudness to it that hopefully doesnt end in this excellent feature film debut.
