School-based question of action research is giving the teachers a chance
to study and improve their own teaching practice in the classroom. Its help the
teachers to identify the issues or problems faced in their everyday classroom.
Hence, this action research gives an opportunity to improve and make changes in
everyday teaching practice through applying new methods and ideas.
There are five headings which can be used to design for an action research
study to answer a school-based question. They are such as topic, research
questions, intervention, participants and data collection.
Topic plays an important role to the teachers to do the action research.
Therefore, to identify the topics, the researchers can brainstorm their mind by
asking themselves the questions such as What issue do I need to solve in this
classroom?, How can I., or Why. For example, The purpose of this action
research is to study whether grammar monopoly board game can help Year 4
pupils in enhancing the usage of prepositions.
Then, research questions refer to the selected topic. The researchers
should narrow down the research questions to be answered. This research
questions also should include the action and the change that going to implement in
the study to improve the teaching practice. For example, Does grammar
monopoly board game help to enhance the usage of preposition among pupils in
Year 4?
Next, intervention is the most crucial aspect in the action research study.
This is because; the researchers should explain what is the intervention will be

implementing by them to the pupils in the classroom to the study. In addition, here,
the researchers should further explain what is the new teaching strategy they
implementing in the classroom. It also should describe why the researchers want
to implement it in the classroom. For example, I will use the Monopoly Board
Game to help enhance the usage of preposition among pupils in Year 4.
Apart from that, the participants in the study should describe the context of
the study. For example, The research involves the pupils from Year 4 Aktif in
Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanjong Rambutan, Ipoh. The class consists of 14 pupils of
which 11 were males and 3 were females. They are Malays and Indians except for
1 pupil who is Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The proficiency levels of the
pupils are below average and weak. Most of the pupils come from a low-income
family background. The target group consisted of five participants who were
chosen to be observed and interviewed based on the diagnostic test, participants
past exam results and exercise books. The participants that were chosen have a
very weak to an average level of proficient in English.
Data collection is another important aspect in action research study. The
data collection should contain from various data sources, collection methods, and
the duration of the data collection. For example, Four research instruments will be
used in this research. They are namely journal entries, observational checklist, pre
and post-test and interview.
