Syllabus
An internship unit forming a compulsory element of the Public Relations Institute of Australias accreditation requirements. The major
activity is for students to spend a minimum of one month full-time, or part-time equivalent, working with an employer in a public
relations capacity. One month is defined for the purposes of this unit as 20 working days. The work experience may be undertaken
during the semester, during the break prior to the semester in which the student is enrolled in the unit, or by a combination of the
two. Students will be required to prepare a detailed report on their experiences including samples of work undertaken, an analysis of
the organisation and the role of public relations within it, discussion of key public relations issues encountered, recommendations to
the employer on the organisation's public relations policies and practices, and an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae including reference to
the completed internship.

experience of their studies. This unit provides you with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and insight into the real
world. The professional practice placement is also a fantastic stepping stone (think: portfolio, relevant experience to be added to your
CV, networking, job leads) for those of you who are looking forward to a career in the exciting, fast paced and challenging public
relations industry.

Unit Learning Outcomes


All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of nine graduate attributes during their course of study. These tell an employer that,
through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and attributes which employers say would
be useful in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the graduate attributes through a clearly identified set of
learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes tell you what
you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully

Learning Activities
PUBR3002 Public Relations Internship is an Individual Tuition Unit (ITU). Students will spend a minimum of one month full-time - or
part-time equivalent - working with an employer in a public relations capacity. During this time, they are supported with unit material
via the units Blackboard site and two face to face orientation workshops. Students are expected to exchange insights and
experiences with other PR Internship students via the Reflective Blog(s).

1. Reflective Blog Contributions
The purpose of the Reflective Blog is to encourage students to reflect on issues of professional practice, including
communication, professionalism and ethics. You need to demonstrate the ability to reflect on theory learned at university and
evaluate how this is implemented in the working environment. You are also encouraged to reflect on new insights gained and
highlight where experiences may alter your understanding of public relations practice.
Throughout your industry placement, students are expected to submit a MINIMUM of four original posts PLUS four replies
to other students posts/ reflections. Based on the quality of the reflection, students will be able to accumulate up to 10% of
their overall mark.
This is a fantastic opportunity to exchange insights with students across campuses and to gain a broader understanding of the
many facets of public relations work.

Please do NOT start your own blog. Author access details to the Blog will be emailed once your placement has been
approved. It is strongly recommended that you print your blog contributions after each posting.
Please refer to the marking rubrics on Blackboard for an indication of how your marks will be allocated for this
assignment.
2. Intern Appraisal Form
To be submitted directly to your Professional Placement Coordinator (local contact or PRInternship@curtin.edu.au for
Bentley students) by your supervisor
Your supervisor is requested to complete the appraisal form available from Blackboard (and the PR Internship Handbook). It is
the students responsibility to ensure the supervisor is given a copy. The form can be found in the extended unit outline and on
Blackboard.
Your results will be available via the My Grades Tab once your feedback has been processed
3. Final Report
Submit to Turnitin AND hard copy to local Unit Coordinator by 4pm due date (you are always welcome to submit early)
It is expected that reports will vary in format and content according to the type of organisation providing the placement.
However, following are some general guidelines.
Final submissions should be presented in business report format with an executive summary, contents page, clearly numbered
sections and sub-sections etc. A report length of 4,000 6,000 words plus appendices is recommended, in order to ensure all
points (see marking rubric on Blackboard) are appropriately covered and discussed.

A minimum of ten academic references is strongly recommended. The literature used to support your recommendations and
other remarks must be referenced either in report format (footnotes) or by following the Chicago referencingsystem. Either
way, you must include a list of references at the end of your report.
A key objective of this unit is that you are ready for employment in an entry-level PR position on its completion. High
standards of written communication, including spelling, grammar and general presentation are essential in professional public
relations. These factors will be taken into account in your final assessment. Poor standards of written English expression
and/or presentation will be grounds for failure of this unit. Please ensure your work is thoroughly proofread before
submission.
Students are expected to forward a copy of the final report draft to their placement supervisor at least two weeks before the
due date.
Key topics to be covered would normally include:

Background of the organisation (including vision/ mission/ core values). You need to reference internal documents and
information sourced from the internet/intranet
Analysis of the industry (e.g. tourism, education, consulting) your organisation is operating in (competitor analysis,
current challenges the industry is facing, your organisations unique positioning)
The place of public relations within the organisation, normally including an organisation chart showing individual PR
positions (Your opportunity to link your experiences to what you have learned throughout your degree, supported by
academic references)
Detailed analysis of current public relations policies, activities and issues. How is public relations currently contributing
to the organisation's mission? (Again, a great opportunity to reflect on what you have learned at university)\Summary of
work carried out during the internship. You should keep a detailed, daily journal to help you prepare this section.
However, there is no need to include the diary in the main body of the report. Instead, focus on key projects and link
these to work samples in your appendix. This section also provides you with an opportunity to critically reflect on what
you have learned.
Recommendations to the organisation on its PR policies and practices. How could PR better contribute to the
achievement of the organisation's mission? Please consider benchmarking (e.g. providing examples of competitors/
other organisations that have successfully applied similar recommendations) and references to research/ best practice
to support your recommendations. This is exactly what you will be expected to do in the real world when trying to
convince your manager/CEO of the merit of your recommendations.

Please note that the above guidelines will slightly vary according to the nature of the placement undertaken. For example, if
you worked in a PR consultancy you may decide to emphasise core clients business goals, vision and mission, and how the
consultancy helps clients to achieve them, as well as the client-consultancy relationship. However, dont forget to provide a
solid overview of your placement organisations competitive positioning.
It is also essential to include at least two appendices:

Samples of work you produced during the internship. Dont forget to link these (stating appendix item or page number)
to the main body of your report.
An updated, application ready CV targeted at employers in the public relations field, including your placement
experience.

These appendices could form the basis of a portfolio that you can use to apply for public relations positions in the future.
Please clearly index and number your appendices for ease of reference.
Students are required to upload their final report to Turnitin. The link will be made available via the Assignment tab in
Blackboard. A hardcopy needs to be submitted to your Unit / Local Coordinator's pigeonhole by 4pm on the due date.
Please refer to the marking rubrics on Blackboard for an indication of how your marks will be allocated for this
assignment.

Pass requirements
To pass this unit you must
a) Complete a minimum of 20 days PR placement experience AND
b) Receive an overall grade of 5 or above and a mark greater than or equal to 50%, AND
c) Upload the final report to Turnitin by the due date, AND
d) Submit ALL assessment activities (report and blog contributions) in hardcopy, AND

Fair assessment through moderation


Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning outcomes, and that
student work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation of assessment are described in the
Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from policies.curtin.edu.au/policies/teachingandlearning.cfm

Late assessment policy


This ensures that the requirements for submission of assignments and other work to be assessed are fair, transparent, equitable, and
that penalties are consistently applied.

All assessments students are required to submit will have a due date and time specified on this Unit Outline.
Students will be penalised by a deduction of ten percent per calendar day for a late assessment submission (eg a mark
equivalent to 10% of the total allocated for the assessment will be deducted from the marked value for every day that the
assessment is late). This means that an assessment worth 20 marks will have two marks deducted per calendar day late. Hence
if it was handed in three calendar days late and given a mark of 16/20, the student would receive 10/20. An assessment more
than seven calendar days overdue will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0.

Assessment extension
A student unable to complete an assessment task by/on the original published date/time (eg examinations, tests) or due date/time
(eg assignments) must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment Extension form (available from the Forms page at
students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate
and provide evidence for exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control that prevent them from completing/submitting the
assessment task.
The student will be expected to lodge the form and supporting documentation with the unit coordinator before the assessment
date/time or due date/time. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the date or due date of the assessment
task where the student is able to provide an acceptable explanation as to why he or she was not able to submit the application prior
to the assessment date. An application for an assessment extension will not be accepted after the date of the Board of Examiners'
meeting.

Deferred assessments
If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check your OASIS email for details.

Supplementary assessments
Supplementary assessments are not available in this unit.

Academic Integrity (including plagiarism and cheating)


Any conduct by a student that is dishonest or unfair in connection with any academic work is considered to be academic misconduct.
Plagiarism and cheating are serious offences that will be investigated and may result in penalties such as reduced or zero grades,
annulled units or even termination from the course.
Plagiarism occurs when work or property of another person is presented as one's own, without appropriate acknowledgement or
referencing. Submitting work which has been produced by someone else (e.g. allowing or contracting another person to do the work
for which you claim authorship) is also plagiarism. Submitted work is subjected to a plagiarism detection process, which may include
the use of text matching systems or interviews with students to determine authorship.
Cheating includes (but is not limited to) asking or paying someone to complete an assessment task for you or any use of
unauthorised materials or assistance during an examination or test.

First Steps
Your first step in this unit will be to explore the units Blackboard site and to complete the four compulsory PRepare to Succeed in
the Real World online modules (Modules 1-4). These will provide you with an overview of this unit, as well as tips from past students
and advice on how to find a suitable placement. The summative quizzes at the end of each module are compulsory. You need to
achieve 100% in each of them BEFORE you will gain approval for your placement.
If you have any further questions, please consider to contact your Placement Coordinator for an initial discussion about your
placement plans. You must take the initiative to do this. Please note that it is NOT the responsibility of either the Unit
Coordinator, the Placement Coordinator nor Curtin University to find a placement for you. Securing an appropriate placement is a key
learning outcome of this unit. General guidance will be provided as required. Advice about approaching prospective employers is
provided below and in the first PRepare to Succeed unit.
You may contact the Placement Coordinator any time up to six months before the start of semester for an initial discussion. If you
have not already done so, you MUST make contact with the Placement Coordinator by the end of the Orientation seminar in week 2.
It would be extremely helpful if you have thought about the type of internship that interests you before then. Ideally you will already
have a placement lined up (note: you still require approval BEFORE commencement of your placement).

Finding a Placement
You should approach the task of finding a PR Internship with the same professionalism and seriousness expected of an applicant for
a permanent job. Please remember that the impression you create now could help you to get the job you would like later. Also
remember that you are now an ambassador for the Public Relations program at Curtin University. The reputation of the course
among industry opinion leaders rests on your shoulders and those of your fellow PR students. It is very much in your interest that
Curtins final year PR students are well regarded by prospective employers.
Please note that internships are normally unpaid. If your supervisor wishes to offer a token payment that should be regarded as a
bonus and is a private matter between the employer and the student.

Think about the type of organisation you would ideally like to work for in public relations. The PR field is very diverse. Suitable
internships and future careers may lie, for example, in the consultancy, corporate, government, not-for-profit or tourism
sectors
Think about what area of PR you are passionate about. Do you love organising events? Are you interested in community
relations? Do you want to use this opportunity to gain an insight into internal communications? Or maybe your main aim is to
go interstate or overseas....

Make a list of possible organisations in your chosen area to approach and carefully research each of them.
After preparing and practicing your phone script, make an initial telephone call to find out the correct name and job title of the
person within the organisation to contact. This will also allow you to find out if your chosen organisation usually offers
placements and may have any availabilities. Note: please dont rely on emails. You are now an emerging PR professional: Pick
up the phone!
Now that you have the personalised contact details for the person in charge of internships in your organisation of choice,
follow up with a carefully prepared letter/email. Dont forget to include an organisation-tailored copy of your CV.
If you do not hear back from the organisation within one to two weeks, telephone the decision-maker to follow-up.
Above all, persevere! This unit has been running successfully for many years. There has never been an instance of a student
failing to find a placement after putting in suitable effort. You may, of course, contact the Placement Coordinator at any time
for help and advice.
Once you have secured your placement, complete the Placement Approval Form and submit it for approval to your
Placement Coordinator. This needs to happen at least one week before you are planning to commence your placement,
as your Placement Coordinator may have further questions. Dont forget to state the dates on which you successfully
completed each PRepare to Succeed quiz and to enclose a copy of your CV.
Once you have received approval from your Placement Coordinator you are ready to go. Enjoy your placement! and dont
forget to reflect critically on the experience on the assigned Reflective Blog.
