Editorial / About the cover

Effective communication at the workplace
provides
employees
with
a
clear
understanding of what is expected from
them, with the knowledge of what to do
and what to expect. For organisations, such
a communication style ensures focused
performance of the staff and getting more of
an emotional commitment to the business.
Higher productivity and employee joy
follow.

2 | Lanco News | Issue 34

LancoNews_Issue34.indd 2

It is very important for such communication

to be two way, as employees should not
only listen, but always have a chance, and

be encouraged to ask questions, discuss,

and express their own ideas.
Feedback mechanisms and sharing best
practices internally should be an integral
part of organisational performance, and
performance management system in
particular. Another area we dwell on in some
detail in this issue.
Earnestly look forward to more vigorous and
productive communication within Lanco in
the coming days.

Friends, we are at the beginning of a new

decade which has aptly been referred as the
Infrastructure decade. And this augurs well
for us. I hope personally and collectively all
of us achieve our cherished goals starting
2011.
Earlier in this space, we have dwelt
upon Leadership, Entrepreneurship and
Ownership. And before that the subject
of Execution. While our Senior Executives
the leaders - are aligned to the Corporate
goals and objectives, the understanding
is perhaps not clearly and meaningfully
going down the line. The key element
here, I feel, is Communication. Internal
communications strategy is central to
the success of any organisation and its
importance cannot be overemphasised.
Effective two way Communication ensures
complete clarity of goals, direction and
expected performance standards across
and down the line. Good communication
improves decision making by providing
accurate, timely and complete information
to all levels of management. This smoothens
interdepartmental coordination and ensures
that interrelated functions get executed
efficiently. It further aligns our stakeholders
to the vision and objectives of our Group
and our business units. Communication
is thus at the core of Leadership. I would
therefore strongly urge all our business
leaders to ensure that they share and
embrace a proper communication
culture by adopting the international best
practices in communication. This in turn
will contribute significantly to our top line
and bottom line performances.

OUR PERFORMANCE...
Speaking of performance, we have had
some outstanding achievements this last
quarter. The first major one has been on the
Solar front. We are building the countrys
first integrated manufacturing facility for
solar photovoltaic (PV) at Rajnandgaon,
Chhattisgarh.
The
Integrated
Solar
Manufacturing SEZ project, which is being
setup in a 250 acres area, will provide
employment opportunities to approximately
8,000 people directly and in-directly. The total
investment in this project will be about ` 3,000
crores. In the first phase, Polysilicon, Silicon
Wafers (both Mono & Multi) and 50MW of PV
Modules are planned to be manufactured.
The project is expected to complete by 2012
with an investment of about ` 1,370 crores.
The Second phase will see the enhanced
capacities of Polysilicon, Silicon Wafers,
High Efficiency PV Cells and PV Modules to
reach 250 MW/year equivalent. The second
phase expansions shall be completed by the
year 2014. During this last quarter we also
received Letters of Intent from NTPC Vidyut

LancoNews_Issue34.indd 5

Vyapar Nigam Ltd. (NVVN) for development

of a 5 MW solar PV project and a 100 MW
Solar Thermal project in Rajasthan under the
first phase of the National Solar Mission. We
completed our first 5 MW project in Gujarat,
which is one of the largest solar power plants
in the country and the first for the state. We
are on track towards developing an overall
of 35 MW in Gujarat under Gujarat State
Policy.

...COMMUNICATION
STRATEGY IS CENTRAL
TO THE SUCCESS OF ANY
ORGANISATION
The EPC contract awarded by the Moser
Baer Group company for execution
of its coal based 2 X 600 MW Power
Project, located in Anuppur district in
Madhya Pradesh, through International
Competitive Bidding, is yet another
significant achievement. This is the first
ever contract for our EPC division for a
prestigious external client and has the full
scope of EPC works including the main
plant. It is indeed an important milestone
for all Lanconians. Now, we must ensure
that we deliver the project well on-time with
world-class facilities and set a benchmark
for the industry. The total EPC order-book
now stands at approx ` 27,500 Cr. And the
way we are going, I am certain that we are
en-route to soon becoming a truly worldclass EPC provider. Another major victory
was concluding a binding agreement to
acquire Griffin Coal asset in Australia. The
acquisition of Griffin Coal in Australia has
been a landmark achievement. This is one
of Indias largest investments in Australia.
Griffin coal, based out of Collie, owns the
largest operational thermal coal mines in
Western Australia. As an energy supplier and
employer of first choice Griffin Coal has been
in the business of mining and processing
coal for almost a century in Australia. These
assets have total resources of 1.1 billion tons.
The mine currently produces over 4 mtpa
of coal and can be ramped up to over 15
mtpa in the near term, post development of
evacuation infrastructure, thus providing fuel
security to our future projects. On the Power
and Infrastructure front, we achieved
financial closure of Lanco Power III and IV
(2 X 660 MW) and Kondapalli III (2 X 371
MW). We have also successfully bagged
a NHAI road project between Aligarh and
Kanpur section of NH 91 on Design, Build,
Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT)
on Toll basis. The Financial Results for the
3rd quarter, FY 2010-11 are out. Honestly,
the results are sub-optimal and we could
have done much better. To my mind there
are two specific reasons for our relative
under-performance in the last quarter. One,
there have been delays in synchronisation

of our power plant projects at Udupi and

Anpara. Two, the profitability of Kondapalli
(Unit II) and Amarkantak (Unit I) have been
lower than what was expected. This should
be an eye-opener for all of us. Ensuring ontime completion of the projects is a basic
necessity and we cannot afford to miss
out on this. We have to build up a strong
reputation for timely project delivery.
Our business units have to get their act
together on achieving better than market
average PLFs and realisations.

COMMUNICATING TO SUCCEED...
This actually gets me back to the point I was
making earlier that of the need for a strong
robust communication process flow to be in
place. Much of the underperformance of the
last quarter could have been avoided with
an effective communication mechanism.
Alignment of every employee to the business
units mission, vision, values, objectives and
targets is a mandatory requirement. Every
Business and Departmental Head must take
primary responsibility in ensuring seamless
communication of targets and performance
standards across and down the relevant lines
in an unambiguous and effective manner.
Over the past few months, an exhaustive
business plan for FY 2011-12 is being put
into place. The emphasis here has been to
ensure a significant surge in both the top
and the bottom lines. We are happy to note
in this regard that a good contribution will
be coming in here from the Solar EPC (PV,
Solar Thermal, Rooftop) which would also
be an important value driver for our group.
Here we have a thorough plan in place, the
numbers known and a clear task cut-out in
front of us. Strict adherence to targets and
execution should therefore be given the topmost priority. I have urged all of us to focus
onto effective Communication this time.
And one major exercise that puts effective
communication to test is the PMS or
Performance Management System. To
make the PMS effective, business leaders
must take ownership and drive the PMS
process. And for this again they have to
communicate really well down and across
lines. This communication well done - would
then ensure that the PMS process is actually
carried out the right way; i.e. with sincerity,
fairness and objectivity at every stage of it.
And when the PMS process gets carried out
well, that would surely help all our employees
to develop as more focused professionals
and happier individuals achieving their goals
and getting their due recognition.
Indeed a robust Communication Process
paves the way for a successful and happy
organisation.

Lanco secures coal supply through

Griffin acquisition

Lanco Infratech Ltd acquired the largest

operational thermal coal mines in Western
Australia, owned by Griffin Coal Mining Co.
Pty Ltd for A$750 million (around ` 3,375
crore).
Griffin coal has over 1.1 billion tonnes
of thermal coal resources and currently
produces over 4 mtpa. The production can
be ramped up to over 15 mtpa in the near

term. This would significantly bridge the

estimated imported coal requirements of 20
mtpa of Lanco, once it achieves 15000 MW
of operating capacity by 2015.
The Griffin coal mines are well connected
to two ports through both rail and road
and are located on the western coast
thereby significantly reducing the freight
costs. Speaking on the occasion, Executive
Chairman, L Madhusudhan Rao said
Integrating across the value chain, this
acquisition will cater to the increased fuel
security for our current power generation
assets and our future power portfolio
expansions. It will also present an opportunity
for Lanco to participate in the burgeoning
natural resources trading market.

- L Madhusudhan Rao, Executive Chairman

Performance Review is round the corner and it is time for all of us to understand the significance
of the PMS process.
PMS Purpose
PMS is not just about a system, use of a set of
forms or a mandatory ritual. It is a process that
involves an integrated approach to focus on
performance and managing people through
demonstration of Leadership Behaviours
and Organisational Values. It is a Partnership
denoting a Shared Responsibility between
the Appraisee and Appraiser towards the
goal of achieving performance excellence
and performance development.
The Purpose is to enable us to manage
our business in a manner that creates a
feeling of Ownership of business at all
levels in the organisation. It will focus on the
development of individual as the cornerstone
for the growth of business. Managing
the business is viewed as a partnership
between different levels of Management and
Executives. It provides a means of linking
Personal Performance with the performance
and development of the Organisation. The
aim is to build pride in our organisation by
helping our people to develop themselves
personally and contribute to achieving
excellence in their work. PMS is a vehicle for
cascading Organisation Vision, Objectives
and Goals from the Annual Business Plan
to KRAs at the Individual Level. It aims to
make each one be the best they can be. It
is not to evaluate/judge or to fix them. The
focus is on Performance Improvement and
Development.

PMS Perspectives
Performance Appraisal has two perspectives
an Evaluative and a Developmental. The
goals in each of the perspective are as
follows

Evaluation Goals
To let employees know where they stand
To develop valid data for reward and
recognition

LancoNews_Issue34.indd 29

To deal with unsatisfactory performance

To help the company make retention
decisions

Developmental Goals
To motivate employees through
recognition & support
To counsel & coach employees so
that they will improve their performance
and develop future potential
To develop commitment to the
organisation through discussion of career
opportunities & career planning
To strengthen supervisor-employee
relations

PMS Process
The input to the process is the Annual
Business Plans. The output is the integration
of the performance of People with the
Organisational objectives. The process
comprises of following five [5] stages
Performance Planning Participative
Setting of KRAs and Target fixation based on
the Annual Business Plans at the beginning
of every financial year It lays emphasis on
establishing key objectives including stretch
goals, standards of measurement, time
frame and resource support required
Performance Review & Coaching
Quarterly Informal Structured Review
on LEO Competencies and Values in
Behavioural terms emphasis is on people
development through feedback, coaching
and development planning on the LEO
capabilities
Performance Evaluation Annual Formal
Structured Appraisal of
- Performance against KRAs,
- Potential on the LEO
Competency Framework

- Values in terms of
demonstrated behaviours
Performance Development Identify
the Developmental needs for improving
performance
Performance Recognition Objective
decisions on Increments, Incentive and
Promotion

PMS Effective Implementation

The implementation of PMS will be effective
when the following Roles undertake the
Responsibilities as detailed below
Business Leaders [CEOs] must take
Ownership of the process and drive to make
PMS effective.
The Operational and Functional Leaders
must share the responsibility in cascading
the Business Goals from the Annual Business
Plans to Functional Goals and further to
Team and Individual KRAs
The respective HR Leaders will facilitate
the entire process in terms of administering,
coordinating and recordkeeping
Individual employees take accountability
for ensuring that their KRAs are set at the
beginning of the year, informal structured
review is conducted every quarter and
appraisal of performance is carried out along
with identification of developmental needs at
the end of the year
Finally, Leaders have to be Honest, Fair,
Sincere and Strict at every stage of the PMS
process and conduct the appraisal process
through Mutual Dialogue and Discussion
in adherence with PMS Policy of the
Organisation.

In a tete-a-tete with Lanco News, Sreenivas Veluri comes across as a downto-earth and modest professional with noteworthy achievements, and a
rather fastidious adherence to punctuality.
What are the memories of your childhood?
As a child I have very fond memories of
my maternal Grandfather and his house
in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, where I was
born. My Grandfather was a disciplined
and learned man and a real inspiration for
me. Besides completing BA and BL those
days, he was a passionate sports lover,
good at tennis and football and had actually
tennis courts laid out at his home. I have
interesting memories of travelling with him in
his car whose engine had to be turned on
with a crank shaft at the front of the car!
My parents come from an agricultural family.
They were keen that I get a good education.
Therefore, shortly after my birth, we moved
to Chennai, the place where I went to school.
School days were great fun. My memories of
city life in Chennai were quite different from

asked the scientist - Sir, how do you spend
your time? Prompt came the reply - I dont
spend time, I use it. The wit and depth of this
response made me ponder. Time indeed is
too precious to be squandered. Punctuality
- is a trait that I follow ardently. Soon after
my Management Degree, I joined a software
company in Chennai through campus
recruitment. My marketing and people skills
were honed here. Thereafter I moved on to
the Fourth Estate the Newspaper Industry
from 1986 to 2003. When the Telugu daily,
Udayam was launched, I joined them as
a Branch Manager at Vijayawada. Then I
moved on to join Andhra Jyothi as GM at

my memories of the village. I remember
how I spent my summer holidays at my
village along with my friends. We used
to beat the summer heat by diving into a
village well or sometimes go for joy rides
on Bullock carts. My mother was always
by my side whenever I needed her. She
was more of a friend, philosopher and
a guide to me. Later in my life, this vital
support is being provided to me by my
friends and my siblings.
What about your Education and

Hyderabad. I soon went on to head Gemini

TV - the first ever satellite Telugu television
channel. Throughout my career, thankfully,
I have been successful in delivering results
for the organisations I worked with. I strived
to be the best and always backed up my
team to be the bast. All my achievements
are the results of teamwork. Till now my
team has never let me down. I did some
unconventional things along with my friends
like making a Tamil Film with Mohan as Hero
and Amala as the leading lady in 1986. In
fact, we were the first ones to discover and
launch film star Amala, the founder of Blue
Cross, Hyderabad and spouse of the famous
Telugu film star, Akkineni Nagarjuna.

Could you tell us something about your

immediate family?
I married Lakshmi Prasanna in 1985. Lakshmi
is an MA in Economics from Maris Stella
College, Vijayawada. She is a wonderful
woman who gets along very well with
people. Even under stress, she is cool and
composed and I particularly like this quality
of hers. My Daughter, Divya is a Graduate
in Foreign Trade and has done Masters in
International Business from the University
of Melbourne. She is happily married now.
My son, Srinath is a Graduate in Mechanical
Engineering from the Anna University and is
pursuing MS in Environmental Science from
the University of Cologne in Germany with a
100 per cent scholarship.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I unwind by spending quality time with my
family and friends. Music relaxes, refreshes
and even heals me. Melodious songs of
Mohd Rafi, Mukesh and Ghantasala are
among my favourites. My all time favourite
is Jo Wada Kiya wo Nibhana Padega sung
by Mohd Rafi. Humour is another vital stress
busting activity which I indulge in quite
frequently. With mounting work pressure, few
of my colleagues at work would sometimes
come over to my cabin to share a lighter
moment. I like watching movies and I also
enjoy holidaying with friends and family
members. My favourite place in the world
so far is Queenstown in New Zealand.
The scenic beauty of the place is simply
breathtaking! I am also a cricket buff and a
sports enthusiast.
You have had a lot of experience working
with the Media. How did you come to join
Lanco?
After two decades of experience in both
Electronic and Print Media, I was mulling
over a job change to the Corporate Sector.
It was then that I received a chance call from
our Chairman, L Madhusudhan Rao. I still
remember the date: 13 January 2004. For
me, 13 has been a good number. I joined
Lanco on 6 February 2004 and am currently
heading the Corporate Communications
Department.
Could you please give a message to fellow
Lanconians?
I can only say that at Lanco we are all very
fortunate to be working with such an ambitious
and empowering management team. There
is great freedom and growth opportunity
for all of us here. As worthy Lanconians let
us pledge to make this place truly the most
admired integrated infrastructure enterprise
in the coming days.

INTEGRATED
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
An approach for sustainable operations
The mangers of power companies
understand the need of quality
management system for the very survival
of the business. Developers of these
power stations know the risk associated
with power generation, and also
understand the difficulty in managing this
risk.
The best way to address these risks
is to adopt auditable systems driven
approach for all process of power
stations once they become operational.
By adopting this approach there will be
sustainable and continual improvement
in operational performance, leading
to the achievement of excellence in all
processes including environment and
OHS. The Integrated Management
System will encompass integration of
Various ISO system like, ISO 9001 for
quality management, ISO14001 for
environment management system, and
OHSAS 18001 for occupational health
and safety management system.
All management a system works on the
principle of PDCA cycle and aims at
continual improvement.
Planning stage involves
Setting of objectives and targets.
These will be in line with overall
objectives and business plan,
which will be linked to departmental
objectives and targets and Individual
KRA and KPI
Identification of Hazards
(Occupational health & safety)
associated with process and risk
evaluation
Legal and statutory
requirement and
compliance analysis
Identification of
environmental
aspect and its
Impact.

Based on above, there will be operational

controls, monitoring, review, corrective
and preventive action which will lead
to continual improvements. The entire
system will be subjected to third party
certification, which will be aiming at
continual improvement by identifying
areas for improvement in the form of
Non confirmatory report. The certification
process requires 9 to 12 months. The
certification will also be subjected
to surveillance audits which will be
scheduled at once in six month till the
system becomes matured. There will be
recertification after every three years.
The benefits of having Integrated
Management System(IMS) will be
Increased Efficiency, Reduced costs,
Increased profit margins
Increased competitiveness
Reduced incident frequency and severity
rates or lost time
Reduced damage to equipment, less
inventory , product loss, and generation
of hazardous waste
Increased companies regulatory
compliance
The Successful implementation of IMS will
demonstrate adoption of the LEO way at all
levels.

Disclosed to me that his spirit was pluming for a flight,
For his hour of departure had come.

Had fastened himself to strict disciplines and principles of great men,

Newtons Mistake
The great scientist Newton had two cats that
he had reared with a lot of love and affection.
One cat was bigger in its physique as she
was the mother of her small baby cat. They
used to play in the lawn and the garden of
Newtons home, but due to fear of dogs they
were forced to come inside while playing.
This way it became very difficult and irritating
for Newton to frequently open and close the
door for allowing the cats entry and exit,
whenever they required.
To overcome this problem he had invented
an idea; he cut two holes of different sizes
as per the size of the cats at his main door;
the bigger size hole for the mother cat and
smaller hole for her baby cat. This he had
done keeping the objective that he will no

longer need to open-close the doors, when

the dogs attacked the cats; the cats could
come inside the house through the holes by
themselves. He was very pleased and prided
himself in exploring and implementing the
idea.
Next morning his milk-man came and saw
the holes. He asked Newton, Sir! Why did
you cut two holes at the door? Newton told
the reason behind it, expressing the feeling of
pride and satisfaction. But a simple question
of the milk-man jolted Newton.
He said Sir, your idea is good, but why did
holes! Both the
you cut two different sizes of holes! Both the
cats can come through the bigger hole!

The Convicts Plan

Two convicts are locked in a cell. There is
an unbarred window high up in the cell. No
matter if they stand on the bed or one on
top of the other they cant reach the window
to escape. They then decide to tunnel out.
However, they give up with the tunneling
because it will take too long. Finally one of
the convicts figures out how to escape from
the cell. What is his plan?
Answer: His plan is to dig the tunnel and pile up
the dirt to climb up to the window to escape

TIPS TO PREVENT HAIR LOSS

Hair loss is the most common disorder that
occurs across all ages. The causes of hair
loss are varied - beginning from an improper
diet to excessive medications. It is often said
that stress can have an effect of increased
hair loss. Hormonal problems can also lead
to hair loss. The diseases such as thyroid
and cancer also increase the loss of hair.

of hot olive oil, honey and cinnamon powder

acts as wonders to prevent hair loss

FALSE: This common misconception comes

from the fact that hair is thicker at the base
than it is at the tip, so shorter hair appears
thicker at first. Cutting your hair does not
affect its normal biologically determined
growth rate or overall texture.

Some quick remedies to prevent

hair loss
Proper care and maintenance are
recommended for prevention of hair loss.
Usage of mild shampoo is recommended.
Massage the scalp for 10-15 minutes with
Aloe Vera gel or any good hair oil after the
hair wash. Do not brush your hair soon after
the wash.
Drinking plenty of water and fruit juice
help a great deal in reducing hair loss. Add
yoghurt as a daily diet and that will help in a
great way.
A balanced diet of proteins and minerals
with green leafy vegetables as roughage is
again very important for good and beautiful
hair. Foods believed to prevent hair loss
include: Fish, eggs, beans, raisins, bean
sprouts and sea food.
Regular exercise is a very good method to
reduce stress and increase longevity of hair.
Natural home remedies such as a paste

Cutting hair makes it grow faster and/or

thicker

To get your hair to grow, brush 100 strokes

each day
FALSE: Brushing that much can damage the
hair cuticle. NOT recommended! Actually,
your hair reacts better to a comb than a
brush. Brushing it will only lead to split ends
and hair breakage.
Diet is related to hair loss

Some Myths and Truths about

Hair Care:
Excessive washing of hair causes hair loss/
dryness
FALSE: Frequency of washing doesnt harm
hair. Wash it as often as you like, although
the recommendation is three times a week.
The right shampoo for your hair type and
texture will actually add moisture, body and
beauty to your hair.

TRUE: its important to eat right in order to

be generally healthy. However, no individual
food has been proven to be beneficial or
detrimental to hair.
Stress causes hair loss
TRUE: Severe stress (e.g. surgery or a death
in the family), can shut down hair production,
causing temporary hairloss (alopecia areata).
The scalp usually recuperates, though, and
hair grows back

Five Reasons to Relish Tomatoes

1. Lower your blood pressure- Add a dose
of tomatoes to your salad plate and see the
blood pressure going down.
2. Avoid colds and flu- People who are
easily prone to catch cold and flu can work
up their ability to fend off bacteria & viruses
by drinking one glass of tomato juice daily.
3. Save your skin- Who knew this
thin- skinned fruit would make a natural
sunscreen. Scrub a piece of tomato daily

before stepping in the sun. You will get less

sunburns
4. Control cholesterol - A tomato a day may
keep artery and heart problems at bay. Four
weeks of daily munching can increase good
HDL cholesterol by 15 per cent
5. Fight aging - Tomatoes are rich in
two spectacular antiaging free - radical
squelchers: lycopene and beta carotene.
Both the youth - protecting nutrients are

enhanced when tomatoes are heated or

eaten with a little fat.
A Garlic a day, keeps High BP away!
A clove of garlic is highly recommended
for high blood pressure. Chew one clove
of garlic first thing every morning and wash
it down with water. The garlic can also be
coarsely pound and swallowed with water.
