5. Describe and apply mental math strategies to


determine basic multiplication facts to 9 x 9.
Such Strategies include:
o Skip counting from a known fact
o Using doubling or halving
o Using patterns in the 9s facts
o Using repeated doubling

Students will:
Apply strategies for multiplication and related division facts to 9 9.

Formatively, I will ask questions and observe students


strategies on how they received the answer.

Introduction Problem of the Day:


Intro: 3-5 minutes
Before Lesson have PowerPoint up and ready to begin
Pass worksheet out before beginning
Read through the problem of the day with the kids on
the board.
Think of a strategy on how someone may begin this

Explain to the students what you would like to do. Have
a student repeat to you what the instructions are
Body: 10-12 Minutes
Give students 8-10 minutes to work on the worksheet.
If students begin to finish tell them to go onto the
additional problems.
To regain everyones attention start counting down
from 10 and say freeze please grade fours and begin
to go over the worksheet
Conclusion 5-8 minutes
Gather everyones attention to smart board where we
will begin to review the questions
Talk about some strategies that other students may
have used to come to the same conclusion.
Use the last couple minutes to answer any questions or
as a buffer if running over time and begin into dominos
exercise.
Roughly 25-30 Minutes
Dominos:
Intro:
Begin with a review of simple multiplication and
addition facts. Using set of classroom popsicle sticks,
go around the room and randomly choose students to
give different multiplication facts. ( 1-2 minutes)
Introduce what we will be doing today: Addition and
Mulitplication Dominos.
Explain what the activity will be. General Idea is each
student will try to complete as many addition or
multiplication dominos as the can in the allowed time
frame. (1-2) minutes
Start handing our worksheets and Allow for a minute or
two for any questions ( 1- 2 minutes)
Time allowed 3-5 minutes
Body:
While continuing to hand out worksheets- have a
student repeat what instructions were.
Complete addition worksheet in roughly 4-5 minutes.
Then flip over to multiplication side. If Students are
done earlier on addition they may begin multiplication
earlier. Make sure students know that each worksheet
is to be completed individually but students can work
collaboratively with peers around you. (7-9 minutes)
To reconvene say Eyes up and we will move onto the

Closure

Total

war dominos
Has anyone ever played the game war with cards?
Well we are going to play with dominos.
Play war for roughly 7-10 minutes
Go into closure.
Gain attention by clapping hands in distinct pattern
Do a quick review of some multiplication or addition
facts to close off the lecture. Maybe ask a few fun facts
such as zeros, ones, 9s etc. ( 1 minute)
ONLY if time permits: What are some strategies you
used when multiplying or adding (counting on fingers,
skip counting, repeated
addition, groups, arrays, etc.) (1 minute)
Clean up dominos and Miss Benson will come around to
pick up worksheets and dominos!
Time allowed: 3-5 minutes
Dominos Time: 30-35 Minutes
