Submergedsteamcoils
Theuseoftankcoilsisparticularlycommoninmarineapplicationswherecargoesofcrudeoil,edibleoils,tallowandmolassesareheatedindeeptanks.Many
oftheseliquidsaredifficulttohandleatambienttemperaturesduetotheirviscosity.Steamheatedcoilsareusedtoraisethetemperatureoftheseliquids,
loweringtheirviscositysothattheybecomeeasiertopump.

Theheattransferareacalculatedisequivalenttothesurfaceareaofthecoil,andwillenableanappropriatesizeandlayouttobespecified.
DeterminingtheUvalue
Tocalculatetheheattransferarea,avaluefortheoverallheattransfercoefficient,U,mustbechosen.Thiswillvaryconsiderablywiththethermalandtransport

Assistedcirculation(suchasstirring)thatwillinduceforcedconvection,willalsoresultinhighercoefficients.Asconvectionispartiallydependentonthebulk
motionofthefluid,theviscosity(whichvarieswithtemperature)alsohasanimportantbearingonthethermalboundarylayer.
Additionalvariationscanalsooccuronthesteamsideofthecoil,especiallywithlonglengthsofpipe.Thecoilinletmayhaveahighsteamvelocityandmaybe

Anothervariableisthecoilmaterialitself.Thethermalconductivityofthecoilmaterialmayvaryconsiderably.However,overallheattransferisgovernedtoa
