Lesson Title: Math Word Problems
Environment: Online
Grade: 3rd grade
Content Area: Math
Central Focus: This lesson will review how to identify what operation to use when solving word
problems.
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify key numbers in a world problem.
Students will be able to identify signal words for each operation.
Students will be able to solve two step math word problems.
Students will apply their knowledge by creating their own word problems.
Content Standards:
Common Core State Standards
www.corestandards.org

Standard 8
Solve two-step word problems using the four
operations. Represent these problems using
equations with a letter standing for the
unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness
of answers using mental computation and
estimation strategies including rounding.

2. Communication and Collaboration
http://www.iste.org/standards/standards- Students use digital media and environments
for-students
to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual
learning and contribute to the learning of
others.
4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and
decision making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan
and conduct research, manage projects, solve
problems, and make informed decisions using
appropriate digital tools and resources.

their own word problems
using the signal words
that were taught in class.

Word problems contain

appropriate signal words to
correct operation and math
equation is solved correctly.

Materials:
Student: Computer, internet access, Abode Connect, white board/paper, marker/pencil
Teacher: Computer, internet access, Abode Connect, signal words infographic, white board/paper,
marker/pencil, lady bug projector, powerpoint, poll everywhere link

Lesson Plan
Opening: Review with students what signal words they know go with each operation. Come up with
words they are familiar with. Have them create their own organizer that they can reference to. Give them
the infographic as an example (attached).
Presentation and Practice: Go over three word problems with the class, show them step-by-step how
you would solve the problem (circle key numbers, circle signal words, set up math equation, and solve),
tell students they are going to create their own word problems in groups, separate them into breakout
sessions to create a word problem and have them solve it.
Closure: Ask students what they learned and questions that they had through a poll everywhere.
