Non-existence is of four kinds prior non-existence (praag
abhaava), posterior non-existence (pradhvamsa abhaava), absolute non-existence (atyanta abhaava or trikaala abhaava) and reciprocal non-existence (anyonya abhaava).. Prior non-existence is non-existence prior to origination, e.g., the non-existence of the pot before it is made. Posterior non-existence is the non-existence of a thing after it is destroyed, e.g., the non-existence of a pot after it is broken. Absolute non-existence is non-existence in all three periods of time; e.g., barren woman's son, hare's horn etc. Reciprocal non-existence is expressed as this is not that. Other names for this are difference and separatedness. e.g., the mutual difference of cloth and pot. There is another kind of difference where the thing in itself is not different but appears so, on account of its adjunct. E.g. pot space from room space, or sun appearing as many in different pools of water. Brahman appearing as many atmas in many antahkaranas is adjunct-conditioned difference in avacceda vaada.
