ABSTRACT:
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge has had the longest central span of any suspension bridge in the world at 1991 meters,
The Miilau Viaduct is the tallest bridge in the world with one masts summit at 343.0 meters (1,125 ft) above the
base of the structure, The Euro Tunnel starts from France and its ends in Britain having 31 miles and 23 of which
is in the sea and the Konkan Railway in India are all major strategic link across two important destination with
advance in civil engineering. The Busan Geoje fixed link project in south korea include the deepest road way
tunnel in the world and 1.6km of cable-stayed bridge. It is the 2nd deepest concrete immersed roadway Tunnel in
the world after the Bosphours Tunnel in Turkey.
KEYWORDS: Busan - Geoje, Sunkun Tube Tunnel, Cable-Stayed Bridges, Case Study.
I. INTRODUCTION
The Busan Geoje Fixed Link project is highly ambitious and challenging infrastructure scheme to cut down journey time
between koreas south coast city of Busan and the island of Geoje. With the help of this project they manage to develop
Geoje as tourist spot and save US$300million[1] by solving traffic related issues with the help of this project. The link
consist mainly three parts which are :
8.2 km long link, which includes immersed Tunnel of 48m depth
A three-pylon cable-stayed bridge
Approach bridges with cable-stayed and road and rock tunnels on islands
A. Routes and other details:
The route connects Busan, Korea's largest port city, to the shipbuilding industries and tourism destinations on Geoje Island.
It replaces either a three and one half-hour journey by road or a two-hour journey by ferry. The new route cuts travel time
down to forty minutes Adequate land use and better site planning so as to not disturb the natural resources like trees, lakes,
rivers etc. The bridge was built under a public-private partnership. GK Fixed Link Corp, a consortium of seven Korean
contractors, has a 40-year contract to build, operate and transfer the fixed link. The project is planned to cost $1.8 billion
(US). The government has provided only one-fourth of the cost; the rest is financed by the consortium to be repaid by tolls
during the life of the contract. The lead contractor in the consortium is Daewoo Engineering & Construction [1].[by- Ricardo

Project Cost:
Total Project cost: 1.4bil.won
Government subsidy: 0.4bil.won
Private investment: $1bil.won
Cable-Stayed Bridges
Two Cable-Stayed bridges features in this projects
A two pylon Cable-Stayed bridge with a 475m main span
A three pylon Cable-Stayed bridge with a 230m main span
The main bridges will comprise composite steel and concrete superstructures
Heavy caisson foundation are precast and submerged into water for making foundations
At selected locations, piled foundation will also be used

Land-Based Infrastructure
An additional project consists of an Eight Lane expressway network
Its linking the Daejeon-Tongyeong-si Highway with Daegu-Busan Highway, in a U-type link
It is a national road and will stretch 17.6km
It will cost an estimated $303 million and total six years to complete
IV.CONCRETE FACTS
Project has been designed for service life of 100 years[3]
The duracrete approach has been adopted for service life of bridges and tunnel
Chloride diffusion factor and age of concrete is main concern of concrete design
There is 90% probability that corrosion has not initiated before 100 year passed
Atmospheric environment and submerged zone are taken into consideration before designing
V.CONCLUSION
These kind of projects like Busan-Geoje fixed link, Millau viaduct, palm Island are wonders of new era. It shows that we
can construct anything with the help of engineering and technology and which can last for 100 year or more than that.
These kind of projects shows with modern construction technology we can solve our traffic and transportation related
problems and we can save ample money and time of people. Although all these projects are very costly but when we see it
on larger view we can say that initially we have to spent more money but when it comes to need of country it helps us and
creates opportunity for a nation that they can construct more of these kind of project. As an engineer we can say that with
the help of our knowledge and technology we can create more wonders like Busan-Geoje Fixed Link.
