Introduction
Chanukah is a 8-day feast known as the feast of dedication or the festival of
lights, celebrated by our Jewish brothers on the beginning of the 25th day of
Kislev (Nov Dec). The Hebrew word "Chanukkah" literally means
"dedication", and this observance goes hand in hand with the lighting of
chanukiah (9 branch menorah) that historically reminds the people of the
rededication of the Temple. This history is found in the Book of the
Maccabees.
Q Why are the Books of the Maccabees not included in the TaNaK (Old
Testament)?
After the defeat of the Greeks by the Jews, the war heroes were given the
status as kings, known as the Hazmonean kings of Israel, under the
leadership of Simon, Judah and Jonathan Maccabaeus. These kings were
influenced by the Roman culture and wanted to merge state and religion.
These roles used to be separate where the King looked after the political side
of the nation and the High Priest looked after the spiritual side of the nation.
This led to Jonathan appointing himself as king and High Priest and that made
the Rabbis furious.
This resulted in the Rabbis to focus the celebration of Chanukah more
towards the spiritual side and the rededication of the Temple, rather than the
physical victory over the Greeks. As a result of this, they excluded the two
Books of the Maccabees from the TaNaK (Old Testament).
The story of the oil that lasted 8 days is found in the Writing known as Nagilah
Ta-anid, the scroll of fasting. This second Temple era writing contains all the
days and feasts where it is not permitted to fast and Chanukah is listed as one
of these festivals. This scroll contains the story that predominately focuses on
the rededication of the Temple and the miracle of the oil that lasted 8 days.
Weather this story is accurate is debatable and only made its appearance in
this writing many years later as a result of the dispute between the Rabbis
and the Jewish Hazmonean kings.
Q - What is significant about this feast and why do we study it?
1
In the Second Book of the Maccabees, which quotes from a letter sent
roughly around 125 BCE from the Hasmoneans, to the leaders of Egyptian
Jews, reveals that this holiday is called The festival of Sukkot celebrated in
the month of Kislev, rather than Tishrei, which usually falls in September.
This was because the Jews were still in caves fighting as guerrillas on Tishrei,
164 BCE, they could not properly honour the eight-day holiday of Sukkot,
which is a 8-day celebration; hence it was postponed until after the recapture
of Jerusalem and the purification of the Temple.
Q Why did they choose to celebrate Sukkot to rededicate the Temple?
2 Chr 7 recorded the celebration of Sukkot to rededicate the Temple which is
a 8 day festival. We later read in 2 Chr 30 that they celebrated the Passover
late because of the Sanctuary and the Priests that were not cleaned in time
for the Feast. King Hezekiah ordered the Passover to be celebrated in the
second month (different to what the Torah dictates) and they kept it for two 7
day periods, and YHVH was pleased. I believe that was why they celebrated
the Feast of Sukkot on 25 of Kislev as a Temple rededication celebration. I
believe that YHVH was pleased with the Jews when they celebrating Sukkot
on 25th of Kislev, rededicating the Temple after its defilement, still wanting to
honour Him. This makes this celebration in line with the intent to celebrate
Sukkot and not because of pagan influence.
Yshua taught on this same prophecy in Matt 24, but links it to the event that is
still to come, related to His second coming. This will fulfil Daniels prophecy twice.
Spiritual Insight: Prophecies can be fulfilled more than once and prophetic
cycles or patterns can occur prior to the main event that prophecy is
revealing. This is known as birth pain, events the woman in labour is
experiencing, these contractions or prophetic cycles are similar in nature
(look and feel) as the main event. Every time she feels a contraction, she
expects the main event, namely the birth, and prepare herself for the coming
of her baby. In the same way, will prophetic cycles precede the main event
that will be birthed into the world.
The history captured in the Book of the Maccabees and the feast of Chanukah
the birth pains that precedes the final birth of the Messiah, the King building
and dedicating the final Temple. The other thing about prophecy is that it is not
predicting the future, it is revealing the future Plan of YHVH. YHVH knows the
future because He knows the Plan and He has the power to bring it to fruition.
This prophetic pattern has been fulfilled in the time of the Maccabees,
and it adds detail to what we can expect, thus making it prophetic
significant, giving us insight into the future main event, that is the second
fulfilment of the same prophecy. What is interesting is, that this pattern
was repeated in 1941, in the time of WW2 where Jews had to flee the
system after being persecuted during the time of the Holocaust. This
event was depicted in a movie called Defiance, where Polish Jewish
brothers saved and recruited Jews from Belarus, in order to escape and
defend themselves against the Nazis. I recommend that you see this
movie.
We will look at the events of the past fulfilment to learn from its wisdom so that
we can apply it in our time if we are in the times of the end. The Book of the
Maccabees was included in the 1611 edition of the King James Bible and taken
out for various reasons that will not be discussed in this study. Studying the
Book of the Maccabees, and the history of this historic event will prepare us for
the future event that shares the same prophecy.
From the Roman Empire came Ten Kings representing the ten toes:
1. Augustus
2. Tiberius
3. Gaius Caligula
4. Claudius
5. Nero
6. Galba
7. Otho
8. Vitellius
9. Vespasian
10. Titus
We see the prophecy of Daniel being fulfilled and proven by these kingdoms
existence in history. What is interesting is that the head, or Nebuchadnezzar,
destroyed Jerusalem in 586BC, and Titus, the tenth toe, destroyed Jerusalem
and the second Temple about 700 years later on Tisha bAv ( 9th of Av) in
70AD. Since then there has never been a physical Temple as prophesied by
Yshua in Matt 24:2.
In the dream, a Rock came and destroyed the statue,
hitting it at its feet. This Rock grew and filled the whole
earth. This Rock is none other than the Messiah as
referred to in Deut 32 as the Rock of Salvation (Yshua).
This is the Kingdom of YHVH that came into being and
spread across the World after the First Coming of
Messiah and the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD.
Surely this is not all that can be seen from the
interpretation of Daniel. There is also a future
application to this vision, and it will play out as part of the end time events
leading up to the last days as Yshua suggested in Matt 24.
The meaning of the belly and the Bronze objects represents
Greece; there is yet another vision Daniel saw that is
associated with Greece and that is the prophecy of the onehorned Goat in Daniel 8:
Dan 8:5-7 And as I was watching, behold, a he-goat
came from the west, over the face of the all earth, and
did not touch the ground. And the he-goat had an
outstanding horn between his eyes. (6) And he came to
the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river,
and ran to him in the fury of his power. (7) And I saw him come close
beside the ram, and he was moved with anger against him, and struck the
ram and shattered his two horns. And there was no power in the ram to
stand before him. But he threw him down to the ground and stamped on
him. And none could deliver the ram out of his hand.
Prior to this Goat, he saw a Ram with two horns, one slightly longer than the
other. This Ram represented the Medo-Persian Kingdom as we saw in
Nebuchadnezzars statue, depicted by the Silver Breast. The Goat with a
single horn came from the west (Greece) and killed the Ram. This Goats horn
was none other than Alexander the Great. This goats horn was later broken off,
and we see in history that Alexander died at a young age after conquering the
known world.
Dan 8:8 Then the he-goat became very great. And when he was strong,
the great horn was broken. And in its place came up four outstanding
ones (horns) towards the four winds of the heavens.
certain holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that one who spoke,
Until when shall the vision last, concerning the daily sacrifice and the
transgression that astounds, to give both the sanctuary and the host
to be trampled? (14) And he said to me, for two thousand, three hundred
evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be vindicated.
This Little Horn stopped the daily sacrifices and threw the
truth to the ground; he was no other than Antiochus
Epiphanies who fits the description exactly. He forbids
Sabbaths, sacrifices to the God of Abraham, circumcision
of children and the learning or teaching of the Torah, the
Word of YHVH. He ordered that all Torah Scrolls to be
burnt and if anyone was caught doing any of these
things, they were put to death.
1Ma 1:20-23 And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt, he returned
again in the hundred forty and third year, and went up against Israel
and Jerusalem with a great multitude, (21) And entered proudly
into the sanctuary, and took away the golden altar, and the
candlestick of light (Menorah), and all the vessels thereof, (22)
And the table of the shewbread, and the pouring vessels, and the vials.
and the censers of gold, and the veil, and the crown, and the golden
ornaments that were before the temple, all which he pulled off. (23) He
took also the silver and the gold, and the precious vessels: also he took the
hidden treasures which he found.
We see from the prophecy in Daniel 8 refers to 2300 mornings and evenings.
Some believe the 2300 mornings and evenings are 2300 years that led up to
1844, expecting the return of Messiah. This interpretation was not correct
because the 2300 mornings and evenings referred to the daily sacrifices,
making it 1150 days or just over 3 years. There were two sacrifices each day,
one in the morning and one in the evening; this gives a total of 2300 sacrifices or
1150 days where there were no sacrifices. This shows that it cannot be used as
2300 days or years and we will soon see the correct interpretation of this number
as it unfolds in history and story of the Maccabees as it was fulfilled.
Q - Do these events fit the criteria of Antiochus stopping the sacrifices?
We have the exact date where he set up his Image in the Temple; this was
15th day of Kislev in the year 167 BCE, where he defiled the Temple by
sacrificing pig on the altar. All we need is the end date to confirm the 2300
mornings and evenings prophecy.
The Maccabees fought and conquered the Greeks
in various battles and YHVH gave them the
victory every time. These battles lasted for three
years where after they cleansed and re-dedicated
the Temple on the 25th day of Kislev in 164 BCE.
This happened 1105 days after the
Abomination of Desolation was first erected in
the Temple. There is a 45-day discrepancy with
the prophetic number in Daniel.
Q What does this 45 mean? We will find out at the end of this study.
Prophetic Application: These were the morning and evening sacrifices
that were stopped, and will be stopped again. The Sanctuary and the Truth
was trampled of and will be trampled upon again, thrown to the ground.
After this time the Sanctuary was cleansed and restored and prophetically
shows us that it will be cleansed and restored in the future.
Dan 9:25-27 Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth
of the command (decree) to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the
Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall
be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times. Then after the
sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the
people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the
sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will
be war; desolations are determined. 27"And he will make a firm
covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he
will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of
abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete
destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes
desolate."
First Work of Messiah: This passage starts off with the prophecy
regarding Messiahs first work, the One Who will be cut off (executed) and
the City and Sanctuary be destroyed (Happened in 70AD). The Hebrew
word translated as weeks only means sevens and relate to years, 7
sevens and 62 sevens giving a total of 49 and 434 years respectively.
Adding 483 to 49 (seven sevens) takes us to the time of 29 AD when
counted from the decree made by king Artaxerxes to rebuild the Temple in
454 BC.
Second work of Messiah: Reading from verse 27 we learn about the
Covenant made with many, implying the nations, which relates to the second
work of Messiah. (Read p9 of Parashah 6 Toldot for detail). This has to do
with the nations coming into the Kingdom that will be completed in the last
week or the seven-year period prior to His Coming. In the midst of this
week (7-year period), the sacrifices will be stopped and on the wing of the
abominations will come the one who makes desolate, connecting to the image
that is known as the Abomination of Desolation. The midst of this week
starts 3,5 years into this 7-year period, and these two signs will signal the
starting of the time known as the Great Tribulation. This is the same time
period as we have seen in the history of the Maccabees as well as in Dan 11,
given as 1290 days (3,5 years), as confirmed in history. (Refer to Chart at
back of document).
Dan 7:25 And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall
wear out the saints of the Most High, and plot to change times and
laws. And they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and
one-half time (3,5 years).
The new little horn (Dan 7:8) from this beast system, sets himself up to
change the appointed times or set times and laws. From a Biblical
perspective, when you speak of set times or appointed times, it means ONLY
the moedim or Festivals of YHVH, His Calendar, His Shabbat and His Holy
Festivals. And from a Biblical perspective, when you speak of laws, it ONLY
means the Torah, the Commandments of YHVH. The dominant religion of that
time that has been Hellenised, took away the Sabbath, the Festivals or
moedim and the Torah and persecuted the Jews during the dark ages.
Traces of this spirit is still found within some Christian denominations today,
therefore, let the reader understand
10
Sign of the Anti-Messiah: There will be a sign showing the coming of the
Anti-Messiah and there will be a sign for signalling the coming of the real
Messiah. The time of the Great Tribulation will be signalled by the setting up
of the Abomination of Desolation as prophesied in the Book of Daniel as well
as found in the history of the Maccabees that happened in 167 BCE. The AntiMessiah will start his reign from this time and will last for 3,5 years.
People will think he is the real Messiah and many will be deceived by his false
signs and wonders.
Mat 24:27-31 For as the lightning comes out of the east and shines even
to the west, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man. (28) For
wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered.
(29) And IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TRIBULATION of those
days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,
and the stars shall fall from the heaven, and the powers of the heavens
shall be shaken. (30) And then the sign of the Son of Man shall appear in
the heavens. And then all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they
shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of the heaven with power
and great glory. (31) And He shall send His angels with a GREAT
SOUND OF A TRUMPET, and they shall gather His elect from the four
winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
Sign of the Real Messiah: Prior to the sign of the real Messiah there will be
destruction, and the eagles will feed on the dead. This is as a result of the
events that happened during the Great Tribulation as prophesied in the Book
of Revelation. The sign of the real Messiah will be revealed after the Great
Tribulation; the sun and the moon will be darkened, stars will fall from heaven,
and there will be a great shaking. The sign of the Son of man will appear in
the heavens, and everyone will see Him.
The elect will be gathered with the sounding of the great trumpet (shophar).
This sounds similar to the event at Mount Sinai when YHVH appeared on the
mountain; the earth shook, and there was the sound of a great trumpet.
Do not be Deceived: We saw two signs; the last is the sign of the Messiah
signalling the end of the Tribulation and the first sign revealing the AntiMessiah, signalling the start of the Great Tribulation. Scary thought is that the
Church is expecting the Messiah at the beginning of the Tribulation, but that is
when the Anti-Messiah will appear to deceive many. People in the world are
not awaiting a Messiah and therefore will not be deceived by a false Messiah,
the Christians, the Jews and the Muslims will.
Q - Where else in Scripture do we see these signs?
Dan 12:11-12 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be
taken away, and the DESOLATING ABOMINATION set up, a
thousand two hundred and ninety days (1290) shall occur. (12) Blessed
is he who waits and comes to the thousand three hundred and thirty-five
days (1335).
Dan 8:13-14 Then I heard a certain holy one speaking, and another
holy one said to that one who spoke, Until when shall the vision last,
concerning the daily sacrifice and the transgression that astounds,
to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled? (14) And he said
to me, For two thousand, three hundred evenings and mornings (2300).
Then the sanctuary shall be vindicated (blameless).

The story of Chanukah is the story of light glowing in the darkness Wherever
there is light; darkness will battle against it to consume it and take it out. The
story of Chanukah is about Hellenism and that of Torah. Hellenism is the
language of Humanism, Philosophy and Theology. Torah is the language of
Mitsvot (Commandments), deeds and revelation. So, this battle is constantly
going on as the spirit of the Anti-Messiah try to nullify the things of YHVH and
replace them with modern humanistic thinking and worship. This battle will
reach a climax at the end of the age during the time when the last three Feasts
will be fulfilled by Messiah Yshua.
During these challenging times, believers in the Body of Messiah faces this
battle and tend to take sides that cause division amongst believers. We do this
because of our background and because of the fact that we all have been
Hellenised to some extent. We have a Greek way of thinking, our education is
based upon Greek Philosophy, and our faith is influenced by Greek mythology
and Greek idol worship. (No offence to Greek people). Our Western world and
society is based upon these Greek principles, and we have to unlearn all these
cultural Hellenistic ways, deeds and methods. These Hellenistic doctrines have
found its way into the Church and have been taught from pulpits for years. We
have been thoroughly Hellenised right from the time of Antiochus until now and
the battle goes on... This spirit, the spirit of the Anti-Messiah was at work even
in Pauls time among the believers.
2Th 2:3 Let not anyone deceive you by any means. For that Day shall
not come unless there first comes a falling away (apostasy), and the man
of lawlessness shall be revealed, the son of perdition,
What is the apostasy? It is the man who would bring lawlessness or
Torahlessness, the son of destruction. When we talk about the Messiah we
speak of the Son of YHVH but when we talk about the Anti-Messiah, we
speak of the son of destruction. He is the spirit or man with no Torah.
If this spirit was actively working among the people in Pauls time, how much
more now as we draw near to the end of the age? Guard your hearts and do
not let the spirit of Anti-Torah come into your Temple and trample upon
YHVHs holy Feasts, His Holy Commandments and His Holy things,
Hellenising the way you worship the Father.
May you use this festival as an opportunity to learn and to prepare yourself for
the things that are to come, and may you be found worthy in the eyes of
Yshua Ha Massiach, our Master and King.
