Pros and Cons of Depression

Treatment Centers
The benefits of a depression
treatment facility often include:

Focus on the family. We

work intensively with families
so they can see what their
loved one needs and learn
more about themselves, says
Kimberly Dennis, MD, a
psychiatrist and the medical
director and CEO of the
Timberline Knolls Residential
Treatment Center in Lemont,
Ill.

Socialization. The isolation

of depression is a reason to go
to a facility where youll be
with other people, says
Kenneth Duckworth, MD,
medical director of NAMI.

Transition planning. A
depression treatment center
should work with you to make
sure you have an
individual treatment plan for
when you go home.
Potential drawbacks of a
depression treatment facility
include:

Cost. Acute care may be

covered by insurance, but
long-term residential
depression treatment probably
wont be, Dr. Duckworth says.
Consider your indirect costs as
well, such as travel, lost salary

or wages, or time out of

school.

Potentially unverified
outcomes. Ask for the
research behind the
therapeutic recommendations
offered at depression
treatment centers you're
considering.

Transition difficulty. Dr.

Wright cautions that people
who go to a residential
program at a depression
treatment center might find it
difficult to end the therapeutic
relationships formed there
when the time comes to return
to their home community.
Dr. Genovese says that its
important to think of your stay
at one of these treatment
centers as the first step in an
ongoing lifestyle change, not a
final cure for your depression.
Its up to you to stick to your
depression treatment plan with
your local healthcare providers
and support groups afterwards.

How to Help Someone Seek Inpatient

Depression Treatment
Watching your loved one spiral down into the abyss of depression can be
horrible to see. You may not know what you can do to help or if you can even
reach your loved one. Youre afraid of saying the wrong thing and making the
situation worse, but you know you have to reach out and do something,
anything, to let your loved one know you care. Here are some tips for helping
a loved one seek inpatient treatment for depression:
Be an Advocate: One of the most important things you can do for a loved one
is to let them know that youll be beside them through thick and thin. Offer
to drive them to doctors appointments and ask questions of the doctor if
your loved one needs the support. Reassure your loved one that youll be
with them through it all no matter what. This type of support can make a
world of difference.
Educate Yourself: Learning about depressive disorders and spending time
researching various types of treatment and self-care activities can help you
better understand how your loved one is feeling. This will allow you to have
an open, frank discussion with your loved one about treatment.
Talk it Out: Approach your loved one about depression treatment using I
statements, such as Ive noticed you have many of the symptoms of

depression. Give them the space to talk about their feelings and listen,
really listen in a nonjudgmental way. Gently guide them into an inpatient
treatment program that youve researched. If theyre not ready to consider
the option, let them know that it is always available to them.

Why Seek Inpatient Treatment for Depressive

Disorders?
If youre struggling with depression, stuck in a roller coaster of emotions,
riddled with sadness and hopelessness and unable to get out bed in the
morning, you may not know how to help yourself recover. You may notice
that youve socially isolated yourself, dropped once-enjoyable activities, and
spend a good deal of time alone. You may have lost your job or dropped out
of school as you were unable to fulfill the responsibilities. You may feel youre
living in a black hole and that nothing will ever get better. With proper
treatment and care, you can recover from depression.
Inpatient treatment that combines various therapeutic techniques with
medication management has been proven to be one of the most successful
ways to overcome depression. An inpatient depression treatment center
offers an opportunity to focus upon getting better. In an inpatient center,
youll learn adaptive coping skills, strategies for relapse prevention, and
ways to manage your symptoms, which will enable you to return to a healthy
state.

all the needs of each person who comes to us. The staff at Highland Ridge
Hospital treats each of our patients with care and compassion, ensuring that
youll always have a shoulder to lean on when you need us most. Our
multidisciplinary treatment team will work together and alongside you to
make sure that youre meeting your treatment goals as you progress through

If you feel that you are in crisis, or are having thoughts about
hurting yourself or others, please call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest
emergency room immediately.

Treatment Options for Depression at Highland

Ridge Hospital
When you first come to us, youll undergo a series of evaluations to help our
treatment team fully understand the troubles youre facing. Our medical
evaluation will help us to determine if you are suffering from any medical
conditions or if youve been self-medicating with drugs or alcohol. The
psychiatric examinations will allow us to get a bigger picture of the severity
of your depression and determine if you are struggling with any co-occurring
disorders. With the results of these evaluations, well sit down with you and
develop a plan of care for your stay.
Medication is often used at the beginning of treatment to manage any
unpleasant symptoms, then slowly tapered down as you learn more adaptive
coping mechanisms. Many times, people who have depression will be on a
long-term medication, such as an antidepressant, to allow for continued care.
Most medications to treat depression do take 6 to 8 weeks to fully see
symptom management.
Individual therapy is provided to allow you the chance to work privately with
one of our trained psychotherapists. In individual therapy, youll use a
variety of therapeutic techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy
(CBT), to help you understand the ways in which your negative thought
patterns affect the way you feel about how you see the world.
Group therapy is very important for people who have depression as
depression can lead to social isolation and feelings of loneliness. The ability
to bond with and work together with a variety of people who are struggling
with similar problems can be hugely helpful. Highland Ridge Hospital is proud
to offer both process-based and psychoeducational groups to help you learn
more about your depression and process the feelings youre experiencing.
Family therapy is an important component for depression recovery as it
allows the time for your family and loved ones to participate in your recovery.
Family sessions will explore the ways depression has impacted your loved
ones and allow them to express their feelings. It can also help you teach your
loved ones more about depressive disorders and the treatment youre
receiving.
As Highland Ridge Hospital is a holistic treatment center, we are proud to
offer a variety of experiential methods to help further your healing. These
may include:

Art therapy

Pet therapy
Recreation therapy
Yoga
Music
Leisure time
Meditation
Craft time
Movie nights
Wii games
Gym & exercise time
Puzzles, cards, and board games

Continuing Care and Levels of Care

Highland Ridge Hospital is proud to offer services across the lifespan. We
treat teenagers, adults, and older adults for a variety of mental health and
behavioral health disorders through a spectrum of services. We offer an adult
partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program
(IOP) for people who want to receive services while remaining in their
community. We also offer inpatient services for children, teens, adults, and
older adults who are struggling with a multitude of challenges.
When your time with us draws to an end, youll work with our discharge
planner and your treatment team to develop an aftercare plan that meets
your continuing treatment needs. Some of our patients feel they still would
benefit from the structure of an inpatient program and opt to join a
residential treatment center. Others feel theyd like to slowly integrate back
into their community and choose to join our Partial Hospitalization Program
(PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP); each program allows the patient
to return home in the evenings. Still others may feel theyve made so much
progress in our program that theyre ready to return home with referrals to
traditional outpatient therapy and community resources.

longer than two weeks that do not meet the criteria for major depressive

persisting two years or longer that may not be intense enough to cause
disability, but can prevent feelings of wellness or normal functioning. People

not have to suffer. While that is not possible, there are other things that you
can do to help your child. Some tips include:

having depression does not make him or her a bad or damaged
person

Remind your child that you will always be there to support and
love him or her
Get professional help
Help your child follow his or her treatment plan and remember to
take any medication that is prescribed
Look out for signs of suicide

adolescents, adults, and older adults who are struggling with anxiety
disorders. We know that each person who comes to us for help is a unique
individual who requires an individualized plan of care that involves
innovative treatment approaches for his or her stay with us. At Highland
Ridge, we believe the whole is greater than the sum of our parts. We seek to
treat each person who comes to us for help with the dignity, respect,

compassion, and care they deserve so that they can return to their

Types of Treatment Offered at Highland Ridge

At Highland Ridge Hospital, we provide individualized treatment plans that
are designed to meet the unique needs of each and every patient who comes
to us for care. Our multidisciplinary team works together in order to prescribe
and provide this specially tailored treatment. In our adolescent program, we
treat patients with safe, proven, and reliable evidence-based treatment
protocols, which are guided by care, concern, compassion, and competence.
At Highland Ridge, we view adolescents as being more than the symptoms of
a mental health disorder; they are people who have special needs, wants,
desires, and challenges. We approach treatment of adolescent mental health
disorders from a holistic, individualized, and caring place. Some of the
therapeutic methods we use to treat each patient include some of the
following:
Medication management: Antidepressants are most often used in the
treatment process for depression in order to help stabilize ones mood and
control the symptoms of this mental health disorder. Each patient is seen on
a regular basis to ensure the effectiveness of medication and to make any
necessary changes.
Individual therapy: Held on a weekly basis, individual therapy is provided to
allow each adolescent to have an opportunity to work one-on-one with a
therapist to delve into issues he or she may not be comfortable sharing in
group. Sessions may focus on anxiety triggers, relapse prevention, and
coping mechanisms.
Group therapy: Group therapy can be immensely helpful for people who have
anxiety disorders as it allows them to connect with others who are struggling
with similar struggles. Through group therapy, adolescents can work
together to grow, learn, and heal. We offer both psychoeducational and
process-based groups that may include topics such as anger management,
stress reduction, and coping skills.
Family therapy: The family unit is an important part of the recovery process
and is integrated into the treatment approach. Family sessions will focus on
the ways in which anxiety disorders have impacted the family, while also
providing education about anxiety disorders and the treatment process.
As a holistic treatment center, Highland Ridge Hospital aims to offer a variety
of experiential treatment options to accompany traditional therapies. These
may include:

of children between the ages of 9 and 17 have a diagnosable disorder that
causes, at the very least, minimal impairment. These numbers are especially
frightening as suicide is the third leading cause of death in youth between
the ages of 15 to 24. Highland Ridge Hospital is proud to serve our
adolescents in our Breakthru program. Our caring staff aims to help
adolescents between the ages of 12 to 17 learn to cope with their mental

pleasure.

thing that matters most recovery. We treat the teens who come to us with

safe, proven, reliable, and evidence-based treatment protocols during their

compassion, and competence. We know that each teen who comes to us for
help is a unique person in need of a specialized treatment plan that aims to
treat the whole person. Highland Ridge sees each adolescent we serve as
more than the symptoms of a mental disorder theyre each a person who
has special needs, wants, desires, and challenges. Our treatment plans are
never a one-size-fits-all approach; we approach treatment of adolescent
mental health disorders from a holistic, individualized, and caring place.
When your teen is with us, theyre our family too, and we treat them
with the dignity and respect they deserve. The whole family unit is
integrated into our treatment approach to make sure that everyone
is on the same page. If needed, we also offer adolescent chemical
dependency programs to teens addicted to drugs or alcohol and
offer a medically-monitored detox program to safely and effectively
remove all drugs and alcohol from your teens system before
integrating them into our addiction recovery program. When youre
at Highland Ridge, youre safe and at home.

Adult

Inpatient Treatment
Mental health disorders are very common, affecting tens of millions of adults
every year in the United States. In 2012, there were an estimated 9.6 million
adults over the age of 18 with a serious mental illness. Only a fraction of
these people receive treatment for their mental health disorder. Highland
Ridge Hospital is dedicated to treating each person who comes to us for help
with the dignity and respect they deserve as they begin their journey of

schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders, and go on to lead happy, productive,
and fulfilled lives. We are committed to providing compassionate, nurturing
care to people who are struggling to live with mental illnesses. Inpatient
treatment for serious mental illnesses that includes acute crisis stabilization,
medication management, and a wide array of therapies has been shown
through decades of research to be one of the most effective ways for people
to begin their path toward recovery from mental health disorders.
Our intensive inpatient program was designed to first efficiently and
effectively stabilize our clients, after which we create an individualized plan
of treatment that meets all the needs of each person who comes to us.

Highland Ridge Hospital believes that the best way to treat serious mental
illnesses is through plans of treatment that are as unique as the people we

Partial Hospitalization Program

In order to best serve our community, Highland Ridge Hospital offers a Partial
Hospitalization Program (PHP) for mental health disorders as well as chemical
dependency. These programs may be used as a step up from traditional
outpatient therapy or as a step down from inpatient mental health or
chemical dependency programs. Our day treatment program meets for six
hours per day, allowing our clients the flexibility to slowly reintegrate back
into their community in the evenings.
Our mental health partial hospitalization program provides an intense
structure each day to support our clients as they slowly return to their
community or begin their path in more intensive forms of therapy. We offer a
variety of services to our mental health day program clients, which includes
family therapy, individual therapy, skills-building, medication management,
recreational therapy, and process-based and psychoeducational group
therapies. These therapies are used to help our clients achieve or maintain

their optimal level of functioning in their social, academic, vocational,

interpersonal, and personal lives.
Our chemical dependency partial hospitalization group is designed for people
who struggle with alcohol or drug addiction. Addiction can occur along a
continuum of severity; some of our clients will need the constant support of
our inpatient detox and rehab while others are able to work on their recovery
in a structured outpatient setting. For our clients who do not require the level
of care of an inpatient program, Highland Ridge Hospital offers a partial
hospitalization program for our chemically dependent clients. This program
meets nine hours a day, seven days a week and offers the same level of care
and intensity as our inpatient chemical dependency program. Our chemical
dependency PHP offers frequent and random drug screening to ensure our
clients are maintaining their sobriety while outside our doors. Highland Ridge
employs the same caring and compassionate staff in our PHP program and
clients will be engaged in groups similar to those in our inpatient rehab
program each day, including:

12-step groups
Psychotherapy groups
Psycho-educational groups
Recreational alternative groups
Community milieu groups
Family groups
Special issues groups
