AMIBROKER

ON YOUR

PC

STOCK CHARTING IS AS EASY AS 1-2-3

Amibroker is a popular charting program for Technical

Analysis or study of stock markets which is used world wide.
Amibroker has many advantages over other similar softwares like
Metastock, Keystokes, Netdania, MetaTrader Metastock etc. There
are two types of stock charts, one is online version which require
internet connetion to load the charts & second is the offline
version which saves data to your hard drive & updates manually
from it. You can view LIVE online charts on sites like
www.finance.google.com , www.icharts.com , www.marketcalls.in
etc. These sites do provide few welknown indicators like MACD or
RSI but it is not possible to add custom indicators to charts and
you cannot code your custom strategy on these sites.
Amibroker is an offline software which requires internet
connection only to download data. Amibroker works on all
versions including Windows-8 so forget about 32 or 64 bit. You
may need admin rights to run Amibroker. If you require LIVE
update for day trading, then you will need an unlimited internet
connection during market hours for constant data downloading.
EOD Data for Amibroker can be downloaded either manually or
through some software. EOD or daily charts need EOD data also
known as Bhavcopy file. Data can be in txt (text) format or csv
(comma separated value) Excel file. This EOD data is provided
free by NSE. All LIVE data softwares for day trading are
compatible with Amibroker.
TYPES OF DATA :-

There are two types of data for charts. One is EOD (End of
day) or also called Bhavcopy or Daily data & Intraday data or
IEOD (Intra-EOD). If you have intraday data you can see 1 min, 5
min, 15 min. or even EOD time frame charts. If you have EOD
data you cannot see smaller time frames like 5, 10 min. charts
since one day of EOD data has only Open, High, Low, Close for the
day. Hence IEOD data is more suitable, but it is less available.
IEOD data consumes more space also. Space is important if you
are are a serious trader & willing to watch different markets. It is
also important that IEOD data should be accurate for best results.
For positional trades or for study of charts you may need only
EOD data which is available free from NSE.

Extract all files inside it to any directory. By default your data

files will be downloaded inside this directory. This is a JAVA based
software, a batch file (.bat) runs a java file (.jar). You will need to
install
JRE
(Java
Runtime
Environment)
from
http://java.com/en/download/ to run this software. Double click
bach file (.bat) & it will load the software. Select Settings---Config.
You will see different tabs like Index, Equity, Future, Currency,
Options. You can select which data you want to download here.
Uncheck all other options. For Equity bhavcopy only select Equity
Bhavcopy option in Equity tab & set the directory to download the
data. Select the Others tab from main menu & uncheck all
options. Sometimes jar files automatically open with Winrar. In
this case you will have to remove this default & change it to open

with Java. On the main window, select dates you need the data &
just click Download. You will find the data (.txt) files in the folder
you selected.
ADDING EOD DATA TO AMIBROKER :Now after downloading of Data. Unzip all files to a folder if it

other sources or you may
need to SKIP one of the
columns in the data files.
Click Next. Now you will
come to Additional Settings.
Here you will need to add
your custom format only for
the first time. Select "Add
Current Settings to ASCII
Importer definitions". In file mask type *.abc. Click Finish.
This should import the data in Amibroker. Save the data by
selecting File--- Save All.

REAL TIME DATA FOR AMIBROKER :Real time data is important if you need to day trade. It is
important that the data should be of good quality since it affects
your trading decisions. NSE provides LIVE data but is very costly.
So we need to purchase RT data from some vendor. Vendors like
e-signal are authorised re-sellers of NSE data. There are many
other vendors who take LIVE data from finance.google.com & then
convert the data to Amibroker compatible data. Thus it is very
important to have a good data vendor. Website of some data
vendors are as follows :www.globaldatafeeds.in,
www.nlcrtdata.com ,

www.esignalindia.com

www.rtdsdata.com , www.valuert.com , www.rtdatafeed.com

ETC
It is always better to have a 2 day trial of the vendor before
you decide to buy so that you can check the accuracy of the data.
Many softwares hog the system unnecessarily which is not very
welcome. Few softwares have a limitation on loading the scripts in
software. Some software use lot of data download which is again
not recommended & may increase your internet charges heavily.
Also check for
FREE TOOLS FOR RT DATA:There are also few FREE tools available which fetch data
from google & feed to Amibroker. Each have their own setbacks.
Most of them do not offer backfill. Backfill is the process of
downloading old data. This means that if you face a powercut or if
your internet is down for a while, you will find gaps in your chart
since data is not downloaded for that time which will make it
difficult to read the charts. Some may record data inaccurately or
may record them late. This also creates a wrong chart which is
not desired. Now that you are aware of the side effects of FREE
data, you can decide on your own of the risk/reward of it.
RT DATA TO EXCEL :-

RT data is taken by any software through two sources, one is

Google finance site & other is your trading software. NSE provides
NOW or NEST trading platform which is used by majority of online
trading providers. It is a copy-paste job to get data from NEST or
NOW to Excel. Before that you need to change few settings in
Excel.
Following are the steps in Excel :1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Open Excel - NOW supports Office 2007 and above.

Click the "Office Button" on the top left of your screen.
Click on "Excel Options" at the bottom of the new window.
In the new window, click on "Trust Center" on left-hand side
menu bar.
On the right-hand side, please click on an option called "Trust
Center Settings".
In the new window, click on "Trusted Locations".
Click on "Add new Location" on the bottom of the window.
Browse and select the "NOW" folder from your Program Files.
This will enable Excel to receive streaming quotes from NOW
software.

You also need to ENABLE the RTD feature in your trading

account. Normally an e-mail request to your trading a/c vendor
will activate this feature. After this is enabled, Right clik on your
watch list & select LINK TO EXCEL, ALL ITEMS. Then go to Excel &
paste it or click "Ctrl+V". This will enable the RT streaming quotes
in Excel. If the RTD feature is not enabled you will error "RTD
ATTRIBUTE NOT LICENSED".
Following are few websites where you will find these utilities.
You may need Microsoft Dotnet Framework to make these work.
Mind well that in no case any support or help or hand holding will
be provided by the site uploading these tools. Also no
responsibility will be taken in case the software does not work or
leads to data loss. Here is a list of web pages where these utilities
are uploaded. A trial & error method may get you to the desired
results.

ADDING AN AFL TO
AMIBROKER :Now that you have
finished
installing
Amibroker, the first
thing you would want
in it is a BUY/SELL
indicator. For this you
need to add an AFL to
your system. So what
is an AFL ? AFL is
short
form
of
Amibroker Formula Language. AFL contains a program / code
written in Amibroker language which tells Amibroker to do various

tasks. You can open the AFL in Windows Notepad or Word & view
the source code to get an idea of how the code looks like. Many
websites pubish AFL for their followers. This AFL may be in form of
code or uploaded in txt format. If you have downloaded an AFL
file, you can directly use it in Amibroker. If the find code of the AFL
posted, you can copy-paste it in Notepad & Save as *.AFL to be
used with Amibroker. Once you have the AFL, you can make a new
directory of your choice in the \Amibroker\Formula directory &
copy all your favorite AFL in that directory. This is only to enable
you to find your AFL easily. You can even copy the AFL to other
any folder / directory like Formula, Custom, Indicator etc. Now
once you have made the folder & copied your AFL, open
Amibroker, click Charts in lower bottom of window, you will see
your new folder name there, click the plus sign next to it to open
the folder & view the AFL. To load the AFL in a new pane, double
click it. Few AFL like a Moving Average need to be placed on the
price for a better understanding. To overlap the AFL on Price, just
Drag and Drop the AFL on your chart.
Example : To put a 13 EMA on your chart, open AVERAGES menu,
drag the EMA - Exponential Moving Average to your chart. A new
PROPERTIES menu will open. In the PERIODS type number 13 for
13 day EMA. You can also select custom colour, style of your EMA.
Click OK. If you need to add another 39 EMA, you can again
repeat the process. To remove one EMA from your chart, right
click on chart, select DELETE INDICATOR, click the indicator to be
removed.
We will learn about other few things as & when necessary.
Please keep your suggestions coming.
Thankyou,
Rajen
