At this Tooro Peoples conference 2016, we shall work with the open space technology for mainly the discussions
on the critical development Pillars for the Tooro region. The method will particularly apply on day 2 of the
conference. Below, we share with you some of the principles of the open space technology. The managers of the
conference shall however endeavor to structure the discussions for purposes of capturing and focusing the
discussions.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Open Space is a technique for holding a meeting that generates communication and collaboration, while helping
participants to develop new solutions to various challenges and business problems.
It invites people to take responsibility for what they care about, Open Space establishes a marketplace of inquiry,
reflection and learning, bringing out the best in both individuals and the whole
There are four simple guidelines or principles:

Whoever comes is the right person

There is no need to wait for an 'expert' on an issue. Whoever is involved in a discussion group is there
because that issue is important to them, Departmental or hierarchical lines are irrelevant in this context,
it is your passion for the subject that matters.

Whatever happens is the only thing that could have

This means taking your hands off the steering wheel. There is no need to control the discussion. A new
angle may be precisely the direction needed for a new idea to break through. Let the group direct the flow
of the discussion. An individual trying to control the outcome will not work.

Whenever it starts is the right time

Page | 6

Its not about getting specific people to be there. Begin with those who are there. And

When it's over, it's over

Your group might reach a conclusion or solution in ten minutes or alternatively continue on when the
available time runs out. You cannot schedule creativity or innovative thinking let it go where it wants or
needs to go. Early finishers can move to another group or the group can move their discussion to make
way for another group.
The Law of Two Feet- Briefly stated, this law says that every individual has two feet, and must be prepared to use them.

Here individuals can decide to move and join any other group they wish to join and also make a contribution in that
new group.
What will happen on day two of the conference: Visioning and defining Tooro Regions
priorities and agenda ( 10:30am to 1:30pm )

Following some of the principals of the open space technology= we have identified 12 spaces at the venue
and each of the spaces representing a particular sector or topic.
For purpose of having a more focused discussionsome names in the respective sectors have already
come up and jotted down and can be joined by others during the conference. More online subscription to
the sectors can already start.
Each of these sessions will take two hours for discussions and a 15minutes plenary feedback and
response.
In each session, we have provided an early suggestion of individuals with expertise on the topic
The group can agree on who among the members in the room can be lead convener/chairperson.
The group must also select secretary for the group, and their role is to take notes from the discussions.
Both the convener and the secretary are permanent members of the group and they will have to agree
who will report back to the plenary
For the other members in the group, they are free to leave (Law of Two Feet) and join other groups
and make their contributions. It means that individuals at the conference who have interest in different
sectors/topics as stipulated do have a chance to contribute to those sectors.
