This tale brings up to the mystical island of Java, Indonesia.

There was a
widow named Mbok Sirni who lived alone in her farm. The widow was a kind woman
but she was overwhelmed by loneliness and longed to have a child by her side.
When her loneliness became too much to bear, She decided to pray to a green ogre
for help. The ogre is an evil monster who lived in the outskirts of the village and was
known to occasionally grant peoples wishes. The ogre agreed to grant Mbok Sirnis
wish but at a terrible price. When the child turns six years old, you will return her
to me to become my meal he said. Despite the horrible condition, The desperate
woman agreed. The giant then gave a single cucumber seed to be planted in her
farm. In two weeks, the cucumber started to bear fruit. Yet, among them there was
one that was larger than the rest. It emitted a golden radiance. Splitting it carefully,
Mbok Sirni found a beautiful baby girl inside. Filled with joy, she named the girl
Timun Emas.
Alas, she had come to love her daughter over the years and could bear to
lose Timun Emas and yet, she would never be able to stand up to the powerful ogre.
Desperate for help, she journeyed to Gunung Kidul the southern mountain to seek
advice from a powerful hermit.
After hearing her plight, the hermit presented Mbok Sirni with four small
pouches. Give these to Timun Emas, they will help your daughter against the
monster the hermit told her.
The day finally arrived and the ogre came to Mbok Sirnis house, eager to
fulfill their promise. Where is my meal! he thundered once he reached her house.
Timun Emas ran quickly, fearing that the ogre might hurt her mother she yelled
hey! bravely so the ogre would come after her. The ogre saw his meal and chased
her into the small forest near her house. For hours the ogre chased after Timun
Emas and the monster was steadily getting closer.
Remembering her mothers advice, she threw the first pouch and it contained
cucumber seeds. Suddenly giant cucumbers sprang from the earth, blocking his
path. The ogre, enticed by the fruit, stopped in his tracks to gorge them. It wasnt
long before he ate them all and resumed his chase. Just as the monster was about
to catch up to her, she threw the second gift, a small bag of needles that is. A dense
forest of sharp bamboos appeared where the needles had fallen trapped the ogre.
The giant ogre eventually burst through the bamboo tree, wounded and enraged.
She ran across the river but the ogre caught up to her. Once more as he neared the
little girl, she tossed the third pouch, full of salt at the monster, hoping to slow him
down. Suddenly, a powerful torrent of salt water formed a giant wave swept the
ogre off his feet. The monster become determent more than ever to catch this little
girl. She climbed up a cliff, hoping to be able to escape but at the peak, she was left
with nowhere to run. In her hand, she held the last of the hermis gifts. She hurled
the small bag as hard as she can at the monster and it fell to the ground. The
monster gave a deafening roar and was just inches to devouring her. The bag,

containing spice had transformed into a boiling sea of muddy fire, burning the
ogres skin. Struggling in the mud, he shrieked and howled in pain and then all
was silent. Timun Emas had finally stopped the ogre once and for all.
