What is Government?
Subject and Grade Level: Social Studies 10th Grade
Unit Title: Unit 1 Political and Economic Structure
Unit One Objective: Students will understand the underlying values and principles of
political and economic systems is necessary to understanding how all people are impacted
by the structure they live within.
Content Standards: 1.1.1 The student will demonstrate understanding of the structure and
functions of government and politics in the United States.

1. Lesson Objective:
a. Students will understand the what is government and the purpose of government.
2. Warm Up/Motivational Activity: 5 minutes
a. The Teacher will ask the students to think about government and what it does for its
citizens.
b. Students will answer the warm up question; what is government and what is the purpose
of government?
c. The teacher will discuss what is government and how government affects the lives of
its citizens
3. Instructional Activity: 20 minutes
a. The teacher will present the powerpoint presentation to the student.
b. The teacher will discuss the important points of what is government and what is the
purpose of government?
4. Guided Practice Activity: 20 minutes
a. Students will complete the accompanying packet to the powerpoint.
b. The teacher and students will discuss and interpret the quotes included in the
powerpoint packets.
5. Independent Activity: 15 minutes
a. The teacher will pass out to the students the iCivics packet on Why Government and
the Sovereign State.
b. Students will complete both iCivics packets by the end of class.
6. Closure/Formative Assessment: 5 minutes
a. The teacher will have the students a complete the exit ticket on what do they believe
is the most important factor of governments effect on the citizens lives.

1. Lesson Objective:
a. Students will understand the purpose of government.

2. Warm Up/Motivational Activity: 5 minutes


a. The Teacher will ask the students to think about government and what it does for its
citizens.
b. Students will answer the warm up question; what is government? on a padlet board.
c. The teacher will discuss what is government?
3. Instructional Activity: 20 minutes
a. The teacher will present the powerpoint presentation to the student.
b. The teacher will discuss the important points of what is government and how
government affects the lives of the students?
4. Guided Practice Activity: 20 minutes

a. Students will be paired into groups using a random group generator to discuss what are
some of the most important aspects of government and what government do for its
citizens.
b. The teacher will have the students share out and discuss their findings.
5. Independent Activity: 15 minutes
a. The teacher will the explain to the students that they will generate their own 2 google
slides that shows what is government, what are the four purposes of government, and find
pictures that depicts each question. The students will produce two slides per student in
the whole google slide presentation. The slides are color coded so the students will pick
there own two slides.
b. Students will complete their own two slides in the google presentation by the end of
class.
6. Closure/Formative Assessment: 5 minutes
a. The teacher will have the students a complete the exit ticket in Google Forms.
b. Students will complete the exit ticket.
c. Homework the students will complete the iCivics worksheet on Why Government and
Sovereign State for mastery of lesson
