TEEKKARI LIFE IS WAITING FOR YOU!

Dear fuksi! Your teekkari life is about to begin. Numerous experiences, interesting studies and wide range of friends with same hopes and dreams are waiting for
you. After starting your studies here at Tampere University of Technology youve
become a member of Student Union of Tampere University of Technology. In the
middle of all this new, exciting and perhaps slightly frightening Student Union wishes to be your guide. Thus congratulations for your excellent choice! We working or
sitting in the Board of Student Union want to welcome you to join our 7000 wonderful Student Union members.
You are holding FuksiAnturi at the moment. This magazine includes some of the
most important tips and facts that hopefully help you during your first weeks at TUT.
Especially you coming from outside Tampere might feel bit anxious what I want
to remind you, is that you are not alone. Do not waste your time figuring out things
alone: older students will surely help you to get started.
The greatest thing about our Teekkari community is the fact that you never need
to feel alone here. According to recent studies students of TUT enjoy themselves the
most compared to any other university in Finland. Quite awesome, huh? The reason for this is the famous Hervanta spirit (or Hervannan henki, as we Finns call
it): sense of community, learning by doing and integrity, that are hard to describe
here on paper but that you understand once youve visited TUT. If after this year
you find yourself experienced just sitting on lectures, you might have done something wrong: TUT offers amazing facilities for other activities and opportunities to
gain memorable experiences. I especially hint you to take all out of our communal
workspace: even the most difficult exercise feels easier when you do it with a friend.
We, Student Unions workers and the ones sitting in the board of Student Union,
are mostly same kind of student as you are. So what are my tips for you, dear fuksi,
after my four years of studying bioengineering at TUT? I want to give you my top
three hints:
1)

Take everything out of the amazing student life at TUT. Student

Unions over 80 different sections and organizations offer something for everyone
out there, from choir singing to space technology and from role-playing games to
weightlifting. Setting out your own club is also relatively easy. Remember to go to
activities organized by your guild: guilds are the best place to get to know older students from your own field.
2)

Take care of your mental well-being by resting, eating well and

doing sports. You may use our sports services whether here in Hervanta or in the
city center and Kauppi campus as well. With the same, relatively small sports fee
you can use any of these offices. Quite awesome, right? Also the three restaurants at
our campus offer diverse and affordable food from breakfast to lunch and from lunch
to dinner.
3)

Remember to study! During your fuksi year you might find combining

studies, getting to know new people and joining fuksi events as a puzzle impossible
to solve. But dont worry. According to my own experiences combining joining free

time events and studying successfully is not impossible.

If I want you to remember something from this text, it is this: the center of
your study life is at campus. Do not spend your nights alone at home but be
active teekkaris!
Active teekkaris follow our Student Unions communications and all things happening at our campus. Listen to your tutor, read POPs event calendar and news, follow
your guilds emails and like Student Union on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/
tampereenteekkari. We can be found also on www.ttyy.fi, Instagram with the name
@Tampereenteekkari and Twitter with the name @teekkari.
It is your time to write the glorious teekkari history. I wish you a wonderful ride and
once again, welcome aboard!

visible events organised by the student union include the teekkari Wappu (30 March and May Day festivities) and the student
unions annual dinners. The Wappu magazine Tamppi and the
song book Rasputin are published by TTYY.

Discuss and develop activities in sections and forums

The student union has several sections and forums organised according to themes and they develop and organise activities and events within their sector. Through these sections and forums
the office receives information from members. The sections are more active whereas forums are
based on conversation. Matters discussed can range from improving the quality of education to
organising events. The sections and forums are not stiff-upper-lip affairs but a chance to have a
conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.

Dont forget to order your student card!

Student card with a valid semester sticker entitles you to student discounts but is not an official
proof of identity. At TUT, student card functions as an access control card to campus premises, a
meal card for Juvenes Restaurants, a library card at the university library and proof of identity in
exams. Always keep the card with you! You received information on how to order the card with
your info letter. Bachelors and Masters degree students should order the blue card. You will need
one passport photo (a printed photo will not be accepted). The card is collected at the TTYY office,
at Paulas desk, and paid when collected (EUR 10). The delivery time is usually a couple of weeks.

24/7 campus
TUT is the only university campus in Finland to be at your disposal around the clock. This means
that you can work in the computer rooms all through the night or pump iron at the Tamppi
Areena gym at the crack of dawn. Your student card serves as access control card. However, lets
not take the open campus for granted: please, take good care of our shared facilities. Vandalism,
general tomfoolery or littering have no place in the teekkari culture.

Van and trailer

The student union, together with TTMK, rents a van, and, together with PerinneSeura, a trailer, for
the students to use. In order to rent the van or the trailer you must be a student union member
and have a driving licence (class B or higher) approved in Finland. Student union members may
rent the van or the trailer for their personal use or for a guild or a club. To book the van or the
trailer and for more information, go to the online calendar at www.ttyy.fi/palvelut/

As

soon as you enter the campus area, the lecturers will try to convince you to sacrifice your soul on the altar of technology. Thats

all fine and good but sometimes its good to take a breather and find something else to do other than cramming for exams. You dont have to search
far for entertainment: just grab your fresh fuksi passport. The imperial Fuksi

Council of the student union has assembled an extensive range of events

and jollities, each more interesting than the next. The passport will serve as
stimulus as you immerse yourself in teekkari lifestyle.
Fuksi passports are handed out to new students at the beginning of autumn
semester. Events and activities marked on the passport have been scored
according to performance criteria and other characteristics. The purpose is
to obtain a wide range of student life experiences and, in doing so, collect
as many points as possible. The points are tallied at Wappu and the fuksis
who have enough points may dip into the Tammerkoski rapids wearing the
teekkari cap in the traditional teekkari immersion ritual.
Points are awarded for nearly anything that has something remotely common with teekkari culture. Points can be accumulated by participating in
leisure activities, studies, council meetings and guild sports sessions. It is
very likely that there is more than one thing that is not completely clear
in the passport. But not to worry! Your own guilds appointed fuksi support
person will guide you on how to use the passport and if something is extremely tricky you can contact the student unions head of teekkari culture.
As the old Hervanta saying goes: Studying without living is nothing. So
join us in creating lasting student memories for yourself and for others.

Guilds
TUT has 12 student organisations or guilds, the purpose of which is to bring together the students of a certain programme,
safeguard their interests and organise various events. The most visible activities include sauna evenings, excursions, sports
events and freshmen activities but guilds also organise vocational subject infos, orientations and other useful events. The
most important insignia for a guild is the overall and each guild has their own colour. Each guild also has a guild room
where students from fuksis to more advanced science practitioners are welcome to spend time. At the Pori unit, student
activities are coordinated by Porin Teekkarit ry. Join the guild activities in your freshman year!

Be international or be Square!
Internationality and internationalisation (kansainvlisyys or kv for short in Finnish) is the buzz word of the day. On your
arrival at TUT, you will notice that our campus is a constantly evolving international environment. We get approximately 400
exchange students and more than 170 foreign degree students each year. In addition, we have a lot of foreign post-graduate
students and staff members. This gives you an excellent opportunity to become more international and enrich your student life!

The idea behind Tandem language learning is that two people who are fluent in different languages, such as a Finn and
a German, get together to enhance their language skills: the Finn learns German and the German learns Finnish. The
meetings can take any form and can occur as often as the participants want. Tandem language learning may also be used to
obtain credits by keeping a journal of the meetings but this is not mandatory. The university and the student union organise
tandem events where you can meet other people who are interested in learning new languages.
Find a Tandem partner in POP (keskustelu discussions in English tandem).
For further information on the course, go to Moodle (course name: tandem).

International clubs
There are several international clubs operating at the university offering opportunities to do job training or participate in
a course abroad or just cook exotic food, for example. Everyone is welcome, regardless of nationality. You will meet foreign
students studying at TUT and practice you language and broaden your world view all at the same time.

As your studies progress, you may want to get more involved in matters of your own field. Clubs are focused on a certain

ETO | Student nation for students not from turku | http://eto.fi | hallitus@eto.fi
Ei-turkulainen osakunta or ETO is one of the two student nations operating at TUT. A direct translation of ETOs name into English
would be the Non-turkuan Nation - which basically means that anyone born outside the city of turku is welcomed as a member of
the nation. Although the nation even accepts people who were born in turku as members - as long as they show enough regret for
having been born there. And yes, the lower-case t in the city name is intentional and correct. ETO was founded on the very purpose
of keeping the rivalry between the cities of Tampere and turku alive and its foremost goal is to physically separate the city of turku
from the rest of Finland. Every year ETO organizes an excursion called turkuXQ where we load our sledgehammer and wedge onto a
bus and try to separate turku from continental Finland using them. Failing that we will try to sink the city by jumping up and down
at the marketplace and also try to have other kinds of fun. The second goal is to unite all non-turkuans under one banner and have
fun doing it. For this purpose we organise other smaller events for our members and other students in the spirit of ridiculing turku.

other activities to balance that out, and, boy, do we have a lot to offer!

Guilds and clubs organise excursions that can

Tempaus
Teekkari tempaus is an event that aims to raise public awareness of a certain (universally or locally) important issue.
Tempaus is not a demonstration, however, although it does
involve increasing knowledge in good spirit. For example, the

Teekkari cap
The most visible teekkari insignia is the teekkari cap. In Finland, the tasselled cap was
adopted by students of technology towards the end of the 19th century: 2013 marked the
120th anniversary of the teekkari cap. Following various developments, there are now three
different versions in use: the conical version of the Oulu teekkaris, the heptagonal cap of the
Lappeenranta teekkaris and the hexagonal cap used by the Otaniemi and Tampere teekkaris.
Tampere teekkaris put their cap on on the night of 30 April when the Suomen neito statue
also receives a cap. The cap may be used freely in the summer until it is laid to winter rest on
30 September in the Lakinlaskijaiset event. In the winter, the cap may only be used on special
occasions, such as excursions, with the student union boards permission.
The caps are ordered through the student union office between October and March. The cap
costs approximately EUR 100140, depending on how early the order is placed and paid for. The
order process and the price are notified well in advance in the autumn. Fuksis get their cap on
30 April if they have accumulated enough fuksi points. Others will have to wait until Mothers
Day (the second Sunday in May). Fuksis selling the TAMPPI magazine may wear their caps
before 30 April.
