Purpose

ThepurposeoftheContentGuideistoprovideasummaryoftheknowledgebasethatis
likelytobetestedintheAppliedKnowledgeTest(AKT).
ItshouldNOTbeconsideredanexhaustiveandcompletelistofgeneralpracticetopics,and
isprovidedasanaidtocandidatesandeducatorswhenpreparingfortheAKT.
Additionally,theContentGuidewillhelpexaminersastheyconstructablueprint(content
matrix/testspecification)toensurethattheAKTquestionssamplewidelyacrossthe
curriculum.

LayoutandAlignmentwiththecurriculum
TheContentGuideisbasedonbodysystemclassifications,andalsocontainslistsofsymptomsas
wellasconditionsanddiseasestopromptcandidatestoconsiderdifferentialdiagnosesforcommon
presentations.However,patientsingeneralpracticeoftenpresentwithundifferentiatedsymptoms
andcomplexdiseasecombinations,sothelistofsymptomsshouldbeconsideredasatotalityrather
thaneachoneinisolation.

CandidatesandeducatorswillnotethattheGuidedoesnotcontainasectionforeveryclinical
examplestatement(e.g.CareofOlderAdults,CareofAcutelyIllPeople).Thebackground

knowledgeforthesetopicsiscoveredwithinthesystemsandsymptomslistedelsewhereinthe
ContentGuide.Conversely,theGuidelistsareasthatarenotgivenasclinicalexamplesinthe
curriculumstatements,whereknowledgeisnonethelessclearlyrequiredtomeettheoutcomes
describedinthecorecurriculumstatement,BeingaGeneralPractitioner.

Whenconsideringatopicnotspecifiedwithintheclinicalexamplestatementsofthecurriculum,the
corestatement(BeingaGeneralPractitioner)andthecontextualstatements(TheGPConsultationin

TheContentGuidewillinevitablyevolveovertimeasthecontentandcontextofgeneralpractice
develop.Moreover,itwillreflectcontinuingdevelopmentsintheRCGPcurriculumandin
assessmentmethodologyandpolicy.

TheRCGPthereforeintendstoupdateitonaregularbasisBUTitisimportanttoemphasisethatit
DOESNOTattempttobeacompletelistofeverytopicthatmightbeincludedintheAKT.
Candidatesshouldensurethattheyrefertotheversioncurrentatthetimeoftakingtheexam.

TheContentGuideisalistoftopics.Thereisnoattempttoattachaweighting(orrelative
importance)toitsvariousitems,andtheclinicalsectionsarelistedinalphabeticalorder.IntheAKT,
allquestionshaveanequalscorebutconsiderationisgivenatthepointofselectingthequestions
foreachAKTtosamplewidelyacrossthecurriculum.Therewillbequestionsonconditionsthatare
seenfrequentlyingeneralpractice(e.g.asthma)butalsoonrarerbutimportanttopics(e.g.
meningitis)whicheveryGPwouldbeexpectedtorecogniseandknowhowtomanage.

Levelofdetail
Candidatesoftenwonderhowmuchdetailtheyneedtoknowaboutatopic,andthisisbest
understoodbyreferringtothelearningoutcomesdescribedinthecurriculum.However,itis
impossibletodefinelearningoutcomesforeveryconditionandcandidatesshouldrefertothe
outcomesdescribedinthecoreandcontextualstatementsofthecurriculumandconsiderthelevel
ofknowledgetheywouldrequireworkingindaytodaygeneralpractice.Forexample,thiscould
includeknowledgeoftheappropriatenessofcommonhospitalinvestigationsthatapatientmay
undergobuttowhichaGPmaynothavedirectaccesse.g.MRIandCTscans.

TheMRCGPisthelicensingexaminationforthewholeUK.Therearedifferencesinthestructure

workingknowledgeofgeneralpracticeadministration,ethicalandregulatoryframeworks.The
topicsarethosethataGPislikelytoencounterinnormalworkingpracticealthoughsomemayoccur
infrequently.Candidateswouldbewelladvisedtoasktheirtrainertoshowanddiscussthese
