6 Philosophy

6 Route:
“CHOICE”
•The Choice Route is one of the primary ways we have to
isolate an outside receiver! He runs a great Man-beater
route, a Out, or whatever tagged route we give him by game
plan!
•The 6 route provides an excellent “counter attack” vs.
defenses that overload to three receiver sides!

•Backside receivers are critical to this play…they are very much in the QB’s thought
process and must use good splits and make good decisions to make themselves
available! The combination of the In and Seam Read creates a “high-low” on the LBs!
•Play action is a tremendous way to vary this play, causing hesitation by the frontside
linebacker(s) we’re attacking and opening up throwing lanes for the frontside Out and
the backside Drag!
•This is one of our top ways to convert 3rd and long situations with easy throws! The
backside routes also make it a viable Red Zone option!

KEYS to a successful play: TAGS/VARIATIONS

• Smart pre-snap work and splits by the frontside receiver. •Individual: Post, Fade, CBk, etc.
• The BS Drag must release, beat LB coverage, and get in the •42-43 Play Action!
QB’s vision! •66-76 “Horn”
• The QB must have his hips ready to throw the Out on time, •Backside Tags:
Dagger, Peg, Peg/Dagger Wrap, Over
& then see the BS receivers clearly as they come to him

…Shuffle, Seam Read to Drag if he does!
BS OUTS: GO READ. READ. Normal even-numbered backside rules. Be decisive, NEVER come inside the hash!
BS MID: SEAM READ.
READ. Just like an inside man on most even numbered routes! Pre-read safety, attack and be decisive!
BS INS:
INS: DRAG.
DRAG. MUST gain inside leverage quickly, explode across the field at a depth of about 4, avoiding and running
past any LB traffic. Your job is to replace the far LB, so keep running, working to the QB’s vision. If you’re being chased,
‘stairstep’ your route early to gain separation. As you approach the far tackle, ‘see the runway’ ahead of you, accelerating
flat if it’s free, settling beyond the FS LB if it’s closed or ‘invaded’
FS OUTS: OUT. OUT. Split top of #s, or on to 1 yd outside hash if on far hash. Use ‘Flat’ or ‘4’ route technique: Attack CB’s
outside eye, straighten, and break at 10. If he’s off, speed break. If he’s hip to hip & running, drumroll, lean, and stick him!
*If you get a HARD press CB outside you and you don’t think you can win, widen split to bottom of #s and signal ‘Slant’ to QB!
QB: 5 angle quick--Anchor to Out, shuffle everywhere else. Hit Out on time if no one threatens. If someone is underneath it,
SNAP back to find safety, work Seam Read to Drag. If “B” is called, go Seam Rd-Out-Drag. Alert for FS Outs ‘Slant’ signal.

•Tells outside receiver on the frontside (or both sides in a mirrored 90/190)
to fake his normal route and break up the sideline, showing his hands.
•Also tells all frontside receivers middle or outside to run a Thin Post to
hold the near safety.
•Technique notes:
a) Use same technique as Fade on deep part of route--get to his outside hip, straighten if he’s
running with you, expect to fade to the ball
b) ANTICIPATE that a beaten defender will try to grab/buddy arm/collision you as you pass
him! Use an aggressive escape technique (Rip, Swim, Chop) on the move!
