Unit-1 General Considerations: Selection of Materials, Mechanical Properties of Materials:

Elastic and Plastic behavior of solids, Design Stress, Factor of Safety, Stress concentration factor
in tension, bending and torsion, design stress for variable and repeated loads, fatigue stress
concentration factor
Unit-2 Functional Graded Material:- Introduction of functional graded material,
the concept of functional graded material, history & origin, functional graded material
application & advantages
Unit-3 Process Technique for FGM: - Powder metallurgy, Sintering process,
Infiltration process, Graded casting process, Centrifugal casting, Tape casting, Thermal spraying,
Vapor deposition Technique, Laser cladding
Unit-4 Fundamentals of vibrations: - Simple harmonic motion, combination of
two simple harmonic motions, beats, Fourier analysis Single degree of freedom system: Free undamped vibrations: Equivalent systems linear and torsional, natural frequency estimation, energy
methods. Forced vibration, Harmonic excitation, support motion, vibration isolation, critical
speeds of shafts in bending
Unit-5 Failure Analysis:- Common causes of failure, Principles of failure analysis,
Fracture mechanics approach to failure problems, Techniques of failure analysis, Service failure
mechanisms, Ductile and brittle fracture, Fatigue fracture, wear failures, Fretting failures,
Environmental induced failures, Processing failures (Forging, Casting, Machining etc.), Failure
problems in joints and weldments.

Unit-1 -Modeling and Analysis with CAD: Definition of CAD Tools, Types of
system, CAD/CAM system evaluation criteria, brief treatment of input and output
devices. Graphics standard, functional areas of CAD, Modeling and viewing,
software documentation, efficient use of CAD software.
Unit-2 Geometric Modelling & Surface Modeling: Types of mathematical
representation of curves, wire frame models wire frame entities parametric
representation of synthetic curves her mite cubic splines Bezier curves B-splines
rational curves. Mathematical representation surfaces, Surface model, Surface
entities surface representation, Parametric representation of surfaces, plane
surface, rule surface, surface of revolution, Tabulated Cylinder.
Unit-3 Introduction to FEM: basic concepts, historical back ground, application
of FEM, general description, comparison of FEM with other methods
Unit- 4 Method of FEM: Variational approach, Galerkin Methods. Co-ordinates,
basic element shapes, interpolation function.Virtual energy principle, Rayleigh Ritz method, properties of stiffness matrix, treatment of boundary conditions,
solution of system of equations, shape functions and characteristics, Basic
equations of elasticity, strain displacement relations
Unit-5 Optimization Technique: Introduction to modern Oplimization
Technique- ANN, Fuzzy logic, Genetic Algorithms, Integer programming,
Sensitivity analysis.
