Helping Kids Do Well And Do Right

(NAPSA)The more than 3
million public high school teachers
and coaches in the U.S. do a lot
for their young charges. They help
prepare their students for life
after graduation. They teach academic lessons and various skills
that students will need to attend
college and to enter the job market. They help them stay safe and
healthy on and off the field. But
theres something more they can
provide that most people havent
really thought about.
Teachers and coaches can
encourage and assist young male
students in signing up with the
Selective Service System.
The Reasons
Consider this: A young man in
the United States is required to
register with the Selective Service
when he becomes 18 years old. In
addition, the U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services has made
registration with Selective Service
a condition for U.S. citizenship for
any man who comes to settle in
the U.S. before his 26th birthday.
Registration is the law and its a
civic duty. Furthermore, failure to
register carries consequences that
can impact a young mans future.
Failure to register closes the
door to:
Many college loans, Pell
Grants, Federal Work-Study and
Guaranteed Student PLUS Loans
Federal job training and certification programs
All federal jobs and many
state and town jobs.
Registration is also required in
some places when applying for a
drivers license.

EARLY DEADLINE
Dec. 27 EDITION!!
Teachers and coaches can help
their pupils prepare for the future
in a way that many may never
have thought of.
How To Help
Fortunately, helping them fulfill
this obligation can be simple. Most
high schools in the country have
volunteer registrars, generally a
guidance counselor, teacher or
administrative staff member nominated by the principal. The volunteer can be a man or woman but
must be over 18, a U.S. citizen and,
if a man, registered with the Selective Service himself. He or she provides the necessary forms and
offers whatever help the students
need to fill them out properly.
Where Else To Turn
Even if they are not the school
registrar, teachers and coaches can
advise their students to register
and they can direct them to check
block #22 on the federal FAFSA
forms or to go online at www.sss.gov
from a smartphone or computer.
Registration forms are also available at any U.S. post office.

www.sss.gov.

Fall Is A Good Time For Consumers

To Review Their Personal Finances
(NAPSA)The last few months
of the year are traditionally one of
the busiest when it comes to consumer spending. Back-to-school
and college spending peaks during
the third quarter of the year followed by consumer spending during the holidays. The Federal
Reserve estimates that credit card
debt will reach the $1 trillion
mark this year, the highest its
been since 2008 before the housing market tumbled. For these
reasons, financial analysts suggest its a good time for consumers
to review their personal finances.
Experts say one of the best ways
to do this is to get your credit report.
A recent survey showed that two in
five consumers dont take advantage
of getting their free annual credit
report at annualcreditreport.com.
While 81 percent of consumers knew
that they could obtain a free credit
report every year, its disappointing
to see such a large number of people
not taking advantage of this opportunity, said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data
Industry Association. Its always a
good idea to stay updated on your
personal finances and your credit
report offers one of the best ways to
do that, especially since studies show
that many consumers underestimate
the amount of outstanding credit card
debt they have. The credit report puts
it all in perspective.

A free annual report can help you

manage your money.
The credit report will list your
credit card and loan obligations.
Check the report and make sure
everything is in order. If you see
anything in error, contact the
credit bureau. If you have any
documentation or supporting
information relative to the data in
question, send that to the credit
bureau as well. Most of these
issues are resolved within 14
days, noted Pratt.
Staying on top of your personal
finances at the end of the year
helps ease the stress that can
sometimes occur when bills start
rolling in at the beginning of the
next year. Be a savvy consumer;
watch your spending and get your
free annual credit report.

Note to Editors: The credit bureaus are implementing a National Consumer Assistance
Plan in New York state. It will be going countrywide. While the information is relevant and
can benefit people throughout the United States, it may be of particular interest to news outlets in New York State.

Five Tips For A Well-Stocked Pantry

(NAPSA)A
well-stocked
pantry is your answer when there
is no food in the fridge, if guests
show up unannounced and on
days when the weather just isnt
cooperating. It arms you with the
ingredients you need to throw
together a meal fit for a king.
Here are five quick tips for
assembling your well-stocked
pantry:
Dried Herbs & Spices
A selection of your favorite
herbs and spices is a must. Consider buying them from the bulk
section of the supermarket or natural foods store so you can get just
the right amount. Store them in
matching jars with homemade
labels if youre so inclined.
Oil & Vinegar
Oil and vinegar are essential.
Olive oil is delicious for salad
dressings. Safflower oil, which is
neutral in flavor, is good for everyday cooking. And then of course
there is coconut oil with its multitude of health benefits. As for
vinegars, they go far beyond being
the key ingredient to your basic
vinaigrette; they are ideal for
marinades, quick pickling and
even cleaning. Red wine, balsamic
and white vinegar are all worthy
additions to your pantry.
Pasta & Grains
Long, short, large or tiny pasta,
a few boxes will keep you covered
whether youre making a full-on
spaghetti dinner or tossing a few
handfuls into your favorite
chicken or vegetable soup. And
dont forget to stock up on grains
including rice, quinoa, polenta,
farro and barley.
Nuts & Seeds
Healthy and tasty, nuts and seeds
add texture and crunch when sprinkled on salads, yogurt, and hot and
cold cereal. Its a good idea to keep
a variety on handwalnuts and pine
nuts are delicious in pesto, sunflower
and pumpkin seeds are great in a
homemade trail mix. And who doesnt love a handful of pistachios or
cashews, especially to stave off
hunger?
Jarred & Canned Goods
Olives, capers, peppers, pickles,
tuna, anchovies, beans, chicken
broth and tomatoes add fun and
flavor to every meal. Your pantry
isnt complete without an ample
stash of jarred and canned goods.
Following is a recipe using primarily ingredients found in your
well-stocked pantry.

Colorful, flavorful and filling, this

easy dish will delight family and
friends.
The Perfect Pantry Pasta:
Pasta Puttanesca
Ingredients Youll Need:
1
4 cup olive oil
1 onion, cut into 12-inch dice
4 cloves garlic, smashed
Pinch red pepper flakes,
plus more for serving
4 anchovy fillets, chopped
(optional)
1
2 cup dry white wine
1 28-ounce can crushed
tomatoes
10 ounces spaghetti, linguini,
fettuccine or other
favorite pasta
3
4 cup halved Lindsay
Naturals Kalamata Olives
2 tablespoons drained
Lindsay Capers
2 tablespoons chopped fresh
oregano
Salt and black pepper, to
taste
Grated or shredded
Parmesan cheese, for
serving
Cooking Directions:
In large skillet over medium
heat, warm olive oil. Add onion,
garlic, red pepper flakes and
anchovies, if using; cook, stirring
occasionally, until onion is tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in wine
and increase heat to high; cook
until reduced to thin layer in skillet, 2 to 3 minutes. Add tomatoes,
bring to a boil, and reduce to a
simmer; cook, stirring occasionally, until sauce is slightly thickened, 8 to 10 minutes.
Meanwhile,
cook
pasta
according to package directions.
Add olives, capers, oregano,
and salt and pepper to taste to
tomato sauce. Drain pasta and
add to skillet, tossing with
sauce. Transfer to plates and
serve, with cheese and additional red pepper flakes on the
side.

Brain Health Registry: Speeding Path To

Alzheimers Cure
(NAPSA)The statistics on
Alzheimers disease bear witnessing. The prevalence of the condition is estimated to triple by 2050,
growing from 5.3 million today to
16 million. It is the sixth leading
cause of death in the United States
and the fifth leading cause of death
for those aged 65 and older.
And costs for the disease are
taking a toll: In 2015, caring for
those with Alzheimers was estimated to be $226 billion, with half
of the costs borne by Medicare,
according to the Alzheimers Association. By 2050, the cost of
Alzheimer s could jump to $1.1
trillion (in 2015 dollars).
That makes Alzheimer s disease ripe for breakthroughs in
prevention and curative treatments. The Alzheimers Association says that new treatments for
the disease cannot be discovered
without clinical trials, which are
seeking tens of thousands of volunteers, both with and without
the disease.
Getting On Board With
A Registry
One of the easiest ways to participate in a clinical trial for
Alzheimers disease is through a
health care registry, which
matches individuals to clinical trials. The Internet-based, free
national Brain Health Registry
launched in 2014 is one such registry. With 40,000 current members, its goal is to double the number in 2016.
The Brain Health Registry
aims to reduce the cost of patient
recruitment for clinical trials by
building a large online pool of
potential candidates.
Once volunteers are registered
on the site, they complete questionnaires about basic demographics, health, lifestyle and medical
history, along with cognitive tests
and a consent form on the Brain
Health Registry website, www.
join.brainhealthregistry.org.
The National Institute on
Aging makes a strong case for
participation in clinical trials:
Help others, including future
family members, who may be at
risk for Alzheimers disease.
Receive regular monitoring by
medical professionals.
Learn about Alzheimers and
ones health.
Test new treatments that
might work better than those currently available.
Get information about support groups and resources.
The state of research for
Alzheimers pales when compared

TV star Linda Gray, among millions with friends or family members affected by Alzheimers disease, hopes a PSA she made will
encourage others to support and
sign up for a clinical trial registry.
to other diseases. In 2011, the
National Institutes of Health
(NIH) spent only $480 million on
Alzheimers, while cancer research
received about $6 billion, heart
disease, $4.2 billion and HIV, $3.2
billion.
Alzheimers Affects More
Women, Minorities
Alzheimers disease affects a
disproportionate number of
women, African Americans and
Hispanics, as well as older adults
over 65. Two-thirds of the 5.1 million people currently suffering
from Alzheimer s disease are
women.
Unfortunately, African Americans
represented 12 percent of the U.S.
population in 2011 but only 5 percent of clinical trials, and Hispanics
comprised 16 percent of the population but only 1 percent of clinical
trial participants.
A recent University of California at Davis study shows that
despite a congressional mandate
that research financed by NIH
include minorities, nonwhites
comprise fewer than 5 percent of
participants in NIH-supported
studies.
The FDAs Office of Womens
Health identified major barriers
to minorities: lack of disease education; insurance status; patient
inconvenience costs; unavailability of transportation; distance to a
study site; and patient and family
concerns about risk.
You Can Help
To help increase participation
in clinical trials and help speed
the path to cures, people are
encouraged to join the Brain
Health Registry for free at
www.join.brainhealthregistry.org.

Five Hints To Help You Save Energy And Money

(NAPSA)Everyone has the
opportunity to help improve the
environmentto save energy and
money while knowing youre helping to save the planet.
Conserving energy is one of the
best ways to fight climate change,
according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Being more aware of daily
energy usage and how best to
limit it can also help you keep
more of your cash while your
home stays comfortable.
Energy-Saving Ideas
1.P u t a l i d o n i t . C o o k i n g
without a cover on the pan eats up
triple the energy. The next time
youre making dinner for the family, consider putting a lid on that
boiling pot of water.
2.Recycle energy. Consider
investing in an ENERGY STARcertified appliance such as the LG
E c o H y b r i d H e a t P u m p D r y e r,
which recycles heat to use less
than half as much energy as a
conventional electric dryer. Its the
first of its kind on the market and
received the coveted ENERGY STAR
E m e r g i n g Te c h n o l o g y Aw a r d ,
which recognizes products that
significantly reduce energy usage.
3.Dont let heating and cooling dollars go up the chimney.
Always close the fireplace damper
when its not in use.
4.Make your air-conditioning unit smart. You can now
m o n i t o r a n a i r c o n d i t i o n e r s
energy usage, temperature and
sleep timer settings from your
smartphone. For example, LGs

Efficient appliances can help you

save energy, money and the environment while keeping you and
yours comfortable.
Smart AC lets users remotely
control their energy-efficient,
duct-free air-conditioning system
while away from home, so the
house always stays at the desired
temperature.
5.Spot yourself some cash.
Use spot lamps when you dont
need to light the whole room. Fit
them with ENERGY STARqualified
bulbs. They provide bright, warm
light; generate 75 percent less
heat; use about 75 percent less
energy than standard lighting;
and last up to 50 times longer.
The EPA recognized LG Electronics with the 2015 E N E R G Y
S TA R S u s t a i n e d E x c e l l e n c e
Award for continued leadership
in protecting the environment
through energy-efficient consumer electronics and home
appliance products.

Diagnosing And Managing Food Allergies

(NAPSA)Heres food for
thought: Food allergies affect
approximately 15 million Americans. Despite this, according to a
recent survey, half of all Americans say they lack proper knowledge about the condition.
The Danger
Many people dangerously believe theres little or no difference
between food allergies and food
intolerances and that someone
with a food allergy can eat small
amounts of a food without having
a reactionwhen, often, the reaction can be life threatening. Fortunately, there are people working
on a solution to this problem.
An Answer
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team (FAACT)
and American College of Allergy,
Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI)
are launching a public service campaign to raise awareness of accurate food allergy diagnosis and
effective management. The campaign encourages Americans with
food allergy questions and concerns
to see a board-certified allergist
and visit www.livingwith foodallergies.org. There, they can quickly
access science-based information
from trusted sources and find a
board-certified allergist nearby.
The site also provides links to support groups, resources for developing food allergy and anaphylaxis
management plans, and other
ideas valuable to anyone who has
or may have a food allergy.
Further Findings
The survey also discovered:
More than half of respondents
(68 percent) think the average
American would not know what to
do if someone he or she is with has
an allergic reaction to a food;

A food allergy can be a serious

and often misunderstood condition. A new campaign and website may help.
82 percent agree that much
more education needs to be done
about food allergies and keeping
those with allergies safe;
31 percent incorrectly believe
the only difference between a food
allergy and a food intolerance is
the level of severity; and
One in four reported they
would search the Internet or visit
a health-related website first for
more information.
Too often in my practice, I see
patients who dont have the correct information about food allergies, explained allergist Todd
Mahr, M.D., ACAAI Fellow.
Many people arent taking all
the steps we recommend to keep
themselves or their loved ones
safe. Others are living a life that
doesnt have to be as difficult as
it is because they have been misdiagnosed with or think they
have food allergies.
About the Research
Research was conducted by
leading international research
firm Toluna, on behalf of FAACT
and ACAAI.

Four Ways To Keep Your Pet Happy In Hot Weather

(NAPSA)Pet parents who are
cool to four important facts can
help their furry friends flourish
during the warm weather months.
1. Heat Can Bring Frightening Sounds of Thunder. Storm
phobia can seriously affect the
quality of life for pets.
Barbara L. Sherman, Ph.D.,
DVM, suggests you reward pets
for calm behavior. Treat your pet
to a special inside toy when he
exhibits calm demeanor; hell
associate good behavior with special toys.
Also, make sure she can get to
a favorite hiding place and feel
safe when the lightning flashes
and the thunder rolls.
2. K e e p P a w s C o o l a n d
Smooth. Brandon McMillan, professional dog trainer and host of
the CBS hit show Lucky Dog,
says, When the temperature hits
85 degrees or higher, most dogs
begin feeling uncomfortable.
Depending on your pets coat, the
temperature can feel 15 to 30
d e g r e e s h o t t e r. L e t y o u r d o g
walk through the grass or on a
cool surface to help her feel better. McMillan recommends placing your hand where your pet
will walk. If its too hot for you,
most likely, its too hot for your
pet, too.
You may want to move your
walks to after dark. To keep your
pet safe from traffic at night, you
can get a leash and collar from the
Petmate Max Glow in the Dark
collection. Let it soak up the sun
all day and it will glow automati-

Toys are great for increasing the

bond between pet and person.
cally when youre out with it at
night.
3. E x e r c i s e G r a d u a l l y. A n
animals body temperature can
rise rapidly due to his or her furry
coat and that can increase the
odds of heatstroke. McMillan
advises pet parents to bring water
with them on long walks during
the hotter months.
In addition, increase your dogs
play time gradually. Try toys such
as Petmates Chuckit! brand Ultra
Sling, a pocket-sized launcher for
a variety of fetch toys.
4. H e a t s t r o k e S i g n s A n d
Symptoms. The ASPCA advises
pet owners to watch out for:
excessive panting
staggered breathing
increased heart rate
drooling and vomiting.
These can be signs of serious
heatstroke or other illness and
should get you to contact the vet
or emergency animal hospital
immediately.
