Sample of Weekly Discussions

Topic: Class Typing Goals
I write to share details of typing experience with you; and further discuss personal goals I have
set for this course. I possess over 15 years concurrent experience in the areas of typing and
word processing. At present I type an average of 60 words per minute. I have found that while I
am familiar with the landscape of the keyboard, I have to work on my finger placement and
extensions. The extensions involving the fourth finger of each hand the most challenging, but I
am confident that with practice this will improve.
My broad keyboarding experience can be contributed to the fact that my work experience has
been in roles that are primarily sedentary in nature and entail me working with the Microsoft
suite of products on a daily basis. The preparation of reports, correspondence, presentations
and other types of documentation is a major part of my current role. In light of the foregoing, I
am keen to move into the document preparation section of this course because I believe that
there are still areas in which I can am not working efficiently when using these applications.
Upon completion of this course I hope to be able to type in excess of 75 words per minute while
maintaining proper form. I also hope to apply knowledge gained to daily aspects of my current
role.

Topic: Precision in Keyboarding

In what is sometimes coined as the digital age precision in typing /keyboarding is key. The
way in which people use the internet has evolved at an exponential rate since the introduction of
Web 2.0. While there has been no update to the technical aspects of the web per say, Web 2.0
has been classified as the social web, in which users are participants. In the past users were
unable to collaborate with others through web applications but this has changed (Evans, Martin,
& Poatsy, 2016). People are now able to share information instantaneously via blogs, social
networks and email, just to name a few.
In order to keep up with the pace set by Web 2.0 developers have introduced features such
auto-correct and auto-fill to keyboarding functions utilized by smart phones and devices. These
enhancements allow users to input information quicker by offering suggested words or phrases.
They look for keywords and attempt to predict the word or phrase the user is typing. It then auto
populates the field or body of text. While this functionality can prove useful, it is also the main
reason why proofreading has become so important.
An individual can find themselves in an embarrassing or risky situation due to this tool, if they do
not take the time to proofread a message or email before posting or sending. A fate to which
nobody is exempt! I for one can attest to this. I usually type hastily and in the past, I seldom
took the time to proofread (as I have a tendency to make changes and edits on the fly). In
recent times I have been trying to pay a bit more attention to detail and further attempt to slow
down my thought process giving myself a bit more time to compose thoughts and writings.
I recall an incident where I communicated an incorrect deadline to my team on a very important
matter. This mistake would have had a financial impact on my employer. Luckily the mistake
was picked up by a member of the team who was also familiar with the project I was working on.
I was fortunate enough to communicate the correct deadline long before the project became
due.

Topic: Keyboarding in the Workplace

Upon reading the assigned article, The Importance of Computer Training & the Workplace I do
not believe there is anyone who would disagree. There are not many jobs these days which do
not require employees to be computer literate. In the past only office jobs required the use of
computers, but today employees utilize computers or tablets on a daily basis for even the lowest
level positons like cashiers for example.
Most job advertisements will call for basic computer and keyboarding skills as they make use of
various computer or cloud based software. Once a user is computer literate it reduces the
learning curb considerably when it comes to on the job training. Computer literate employees
are also able to work more efficiently which leads to increased productivity. This is due to the
fact that they are able to reduce the amount of time spent carrying out tasks manually through
the use of computers and their software.
As noted in the article, the importance of computer training is twofold. On one hand it is vital for
potential employees to obtain computer training to make themselves more marketable and
further enable them to secure higher level positions; and on the secondhand, it is also beneficial
for organizations to utilize computer training in their new-hire training programs and employee
development initiatives (Houston Chronicle, 2016).

Library Assignment: The Intentional Data Scientist Three Ways
to Get Started
The journal article, The Intentional Data Scientist: Three Ways to get Started appealed to me
for this assignment because career is slowly gravitating towards this field. This item was
extremely informative and carefully charted out the points to consider when embarking down
this road. Data science is a field which relates to multiple branches of knowledge. Through the
use of processes and systems it reviews data in many forms and dissects it in order to gain a
better understanding, and analyse trends to make inferences and predictions.

Data science combines the traditional science of statistics

with programming and domain expertise. Drew Conway's
Data Science Venn Diagram demonstrates this perfectly
[ CITATION Dan16 \l 1033 ]. The Venn diagram illustrates
how possessing hacking skills, math & statistics
knowledge, and substantive expertise in your profession
crucial in this multi-faceted role. After reading I was able
identify the areas I must now focus on in order to excel in
field.

are

this

The article also offered suggested literature and self-study sites which would prove useful when
pursuing a career in the field of data science. Data science is not only focused on the gathering
of data. As it currently stands I am in the Substantive Research zone and me enrolling at the
International College of the Cayman Islands was a first step towards entering the Traditional
Research zone.

Career Readiness Day Assignment: YMCA Careers & Internship

For the Career Readiness Day I chose to attend the workshop on the YMCA ting. I chose to
attend this session because both of my children are very active in sports and I wanted details on
the program. Upon completion I realise that YMCA is about much more than I expected. YMCA
is the acronym for Young Men's Christian Association. According to dictionary reference, the
Young Men's Christian Association is an international organization that offers a variety of
activities and services for young men and women [ CITATION Ref16 \l 1033 ]. The slogan of the
YMCA is for her, for him, for all, for a better us and it was founded in London by George
Williams in 1844. The founder was a farmer who migrated to London, which was by now was
being actively developed. The concept came about due to the lack of social activities and
resources available to young men. Along with a group of friends George Williams established a
bible study and prayer group which blossomed into the program we have come to know today.
The YMCA it not only about the offering of sporting programs and other social activities, it is
about inspiring young people through mentorship. The aim is to be proactive and tackle social
problems before they develop. Their focus is the development of youth mentally, physically and
spiritually. They promote healthy living and social responsibility and encourage a health balance
of the mind, body and spirit. They are after all the largest youth development and family
services organisation worldwide.
The Cayman Islands branch of the YMCA was established n 2012. Their mission is to help
people reach their God-given potential by putting Christian principles in ways that build healthy
spirit, mind and bot for all [ CITATION YMC16 \l 1033 ]. The core values that they promote are
honesty, caring, respect and faith. Attendees are awarded each time they display behavior
which promotes any one of these core values. YMCA Cayman Islands has partnered with
government bodies and other non-profit organisations via the Department of Children and
Family Services and the National Council of Voluntary Organisations. They were recently
awarded a contract for the provision of support for afterschool care and programs run by the
Cayman Islands Government.
Though the YMCA relies heavily on sponsorships they do have a considerable amount of paid
positions. They also have a teen leaders program which aims to develop the leadership skills of
the teenaged children in the program. They allow the teens to run programs for the younger
members. The program gives them real-life, hands-on leadership experience through fun
volunteer opportunities, through participation in ordinary leadership training that will challenge
the thinking [ CITATION YMC16 \l 1033 ]. I believe the YMCA was much needed and hope to
see them grow more in the future. In my spare time I intend to volunteer with them in some
shape or form.

Dear Ms. Vanderford:
Your inquiry concerning a comparison of the modified block letter format and th4 eblock letter
format is one often answered by our document designers. The modified block format differs
from block format in that the date, complimentary close, and the writers name and title are
keyed at the center point. For production efficiency, we recommend block paragraphs.
Although modified block format is an accepted letter style, we do recommend the block letter
style. The block letter style is more efficient for a standard letter style, requires no additional
settings by the user, and is attractive.
For additional formats, please refer to the enclosed report related to formatting with the latest

Identify Your Audience and Purpose

Effective presenters realize the need to prepare for a successful presentation. Two areas of
extensive preparation are the development of a thorough audience analysis and identification of
a well- defined presentation purpose.

Audience Analysis
The presenter must conduct a thorough audience analysis before developing the presentation.
A listing of common audience demographics is shown in the table below.
Audience Profile
Age
Education
Marital status
Group membership

Gender
Ethnic group
Geographic location
Vested interest in topic

Given sufficient time, the presenter will research each of these areas carefully. Additionally,
interviews with program planners and organization leaders will provide insight into the need,
desires, and expectations of the specific audience.
Many successful presenters find it useful to arrive early to the presentation and greet
participants as they enter the meeting room. Often presenters may begin the presentation with
one or two directed questions to understand the profile and demeanor of the audience.
Knowing the audience is an important first step in preparing a successful presentation.

Purpose of the Presentation

After initially analyzing the audience profile well in advance, the presenter has a clear focus on
the needs of the audience and then writes a well-defined purpose of the presentation that is on
target. The presenter remembers to state the purpose in the introduction of the presentation to
assist the audience in understanding the well-defined direction of the presentation.

FOUNDATION PROPERTY
The Foundation owns both out-of-state and in-state property. However, the bulk of the
property is located within South Carolina. Properties are acquired either by gift or purchase.

Out-of-State Property
Virtually all the out-of-state property is acquired by gift. Occasionally, a parcel of
undeveloped or developed land will be offered to the Foundation at a bargain price. The
Foundation then sells the property as soon as it is feasible to do so and retains the profit. The
total value of the out-of-state property is $2,145,000.

South Carolina Property

Some of the in-state property is purchased by the Foundation for future use. Other
property is donated to the Foundation. Donated property may be retained for future use or sold.
In-state property is divided into three regions-Coastal, Midlands, and Other. The Following table
shows the distribution of the property by region:

Property Location and Value

South Carolina Regions

Value of Property

Total Property

Coastal Region
Midlands Region
Other Regions-In-State

$18,325,000
53%
$12,650,000
36%
$3,840,000
11%
$34,815,000
100%
The total value of the instate property is $34,815,000. More than half of the property is

located in the Coastal region. The next largest concentration is in the Midlands region. The
property values are based on the appraisal price of the acquisition. Most real estate professionals
estimate that the current value is more than double the value shown in the table.
