LAN NETWORK DESIGN

In this paper, we propose to design a LAN connection in H305 with 50 computer
terminals using a hybrid topology. Ten five-terminal star topologies are linked to a bus
trunk that serves as the networks backbone.
The physical topology considered is hybrid topology. Hybrid networks use a
combination of any two or more topologies in such a way that the resulting network
does not exhibit one of the standard topologies bus. A hybrid topology is always
produced when two different basic network topologies are connected. Two common
examples for Hybrid network are star-ring network and star-bus network. For this
design, a star-bus network will be used. Star-bus topology is also referred to as Tree
topology.
A star-bus network consists of two or more star topologies connected using a bus
trunk. Several star topology networks are linked to a bus connection. In this topology, if
a computer fails, it will not affect the rest of the network. However, if the central
component, or hub, that attaches all computers in a star, fails, then you have big
problems since no computer will be able to communicate.
Hybrid topology is used in this network design because of the following
advantages:
1. Reliable: Unlike other networks, fault detection and troubleshooting is easy in this
type of topology. The part in which fault is detected can be isolated from the rest of
network and required corrective measures can be taken, without affecting the
functioning of rest of the network.
2. Scalable: It is easy to increase the size of network by adding new components,
without disturbing existing architecture.
3. Flexible: Hybrid Network can be designed according to the requirements of the
organization and by optimizing the available resources. Special care can be given to
nodes where traffic is high as well as where chances of fault are high.
4. Effective: Hybrid topology is the combination of two or more topologies, so we can
design it in such a way that strengths of constituent topologies are maximized while
there weaknesses are neutralized.
However, star-bus hybrid topology are costly. The hubs used to connect two
distinct networks are very expensive because they are different from the usual hub as
they need to be intelligent enough to work with different architectures and should be
able to function even if a part of the network is down. Also, the physical infrastructure is
also expensive as it requires a lot of cables and sophisticated network devices. But
despite of these, the drawbacks are compensated by the listed advantages of the
network.
In terms of network structure, peer-to-peer network is used. In a peer-to-peer
(P2P) network, all files are shared among existing stations. There is no limitation for the
number of computers in a peer-to-peer network but P2P implementations are meant for

small networks. Typically a workgroup contain less than 10 workstations. There is no

server, so all stations must sustain traffic loads from other clients.
