PHED 239: High School Module
Worksheet - Chapter 3
Be prepared to discuss in class:
1.
As a physical educator, what are the implications of grouping high
school students by chronological age rather than by developmental level?
Give examples.
There are many reasons why high school phys. ed. should be grouped by
developmental level rather than grade levels. One reason is because there
are different levels of intensity. If there is a higher developmental level then
their intensity could be higher than the lower levels. Also competition could
be higher at higher level of development rather than the lower level. So it
could make things harder for the lower level of development compared to
the higher level. If students are the same age it doesnt mean that they are
at the same developmental level when it comes to any subject.
2.
Share examples (at least one each) of characteristics (physical,
social, emotional, and intellectual) of high school students, and the
implications for each trait.
- Physical - Some students can be short and scrawny, Some are
physically matured. Growth spurts are finished by their senior year. They
have better coordination and some are at the perfect age to learn new
motor skills. The students catch on quicker to what's being taught so
there's more time for gameplay and activities related to the objectives.
- Social- They gain more independence and more decision making. Able
to make choices independently which can lead to more participation.
Leadership roles can be more trusted as well in the high school level. The
High school students social characteristics can mold their identity.
- Emotional- Wide spread of emotional development. Some can be
immature but as they grow older then they start to mature. Students are
comfortable with themselves as the grow older so giving them

independence is great to make their emotional characteristics become

more confident.
- Intellectual- Different knowledge levels, some teachers might not be
able to recognize different intellectual levels. To determine these levels it is
important to give the students more independence and use guided
discovery to see who can use that to their abilities and who cant. The
students interest narrow what they like and what they dont like. Also ask
questions of other subjects to determine each student's intellectual level.
