Tool For Defining Areas Of Gang Activity Using Police Records." Journal Of Quantitative
Criminology 16.3 (2000): 369-383.
This article states that A strong relationship is found between the number of gangs
that are active in an area and the general level of criminal activity. With a new method it has
made it easier to find these locations, by Using old and new police incident records from way
back in 1996. It is based on standard geographic techniques and uses a uniform grid which cuts
the city into 150m squares. The technique has shown to be successful in describing areas where a
lot of gang activities occur.

Forward And Past Violence." Conflict Resolution Quarterly33.1 (2015): 99-115.
This article focuses on the explanation of the real cause of pervasive violence in
South Side Chicago neighborhoods, subsequently offering solutions that are being taken through
contributions and progressive efforts stemming from individuals residing in these areas. It
mentions the active efforts of nonprofits working to decrease violence as well as educational
programs focusing on interpersonal skills, mediation, and emotional intelligence. This article
helps me in understanding the causes of the violence in Chicago, and how individualized or local
solutions can be effective in reducing the crime rate in South Side of Chicago.

Mark Iris"Police Discipline In Chicago: Arbitration Or Arbitrary?." Journal Of

Criminal Law & Criminology 89.1 (1998): 215.
This article discusses how the police officers are not the ones who determine what
the discipline of the offender will be. It is instead determined by a third party arbitrator. Due to
the fact that it is not determined by the police department themselves, it means more police
officers get suspended or fired over unfair disputes. That means the city of Chicago loses a quite
amount of officers due to false accusations made by the offenders. This is just more evidence to
support the fact that it would be a good idea for the department to hire more officers to the force.

South Side." Geographical Bulletin 55.2 (2014): 63-80. Academic Search Complete. Web. 16
Nov. 2016.
This article shows the effects of population displacement after the destroying of
the Robert Taylor projects that were located in Chicago's 2nd police district. It shows crime in
the highly severely impoverished, and racially segregated neighborhoods where many former
residents from Robert Taylor projects relocated. The main goal is to see whether or not there is a
correlation with the destruction of the projects and the trends of murder, robbery and overall total
crime in the neighboring neighborhoods

The main point of this article is to show the negative effects violence has on the
youth and all the residents of any community. It states that when the youth is exposed to violence
it causes them to form psychological health issues such as posttraumatic stress disorder or
(PTSD). The youth eventually feel depression and aggression which they take with them to
adulthood they then become delinquents who cause truancy, lying, and vandalism throughout the
entire community.
