Our team has worked tirelessly to provide for you a
professional resource that can be used every day. It
is inspiring to have received so many encouraging
comments about this publication, thank you for

This has been the rainiest rainy season I have
experienced. The rains, rivers and tides change the
landscape of the beach almost daily. Everything is
green and lush.
The country is preparing for and looking forward to
the hustle and bustle of high season. The rains
cease and the trade winds begin. It is summer in
Panama, the children are out of school, family
vacations are in full swing and the snowbirds have
returned. People are everywhere, a welcome
change for businesses.

Bienvenido a LORE Magazine!

The Panama Riviera remains a popular destination for

Panamanians and the world. The area is consistently
growing as word gets out about the magnificence,
amenities, opportunities and lifestyle of this region of
Panama. The tourists who come for a beach or highland
experience get exactly what they want and continue to
return for annual vacations. Often times they relocate
permanently.
As the area expands information continues to be obtained
mostly by word of mouth. This is how LORE got its name.
LORE is a derivative of folklore. The definition of
folklore is to pass by word of mouth through the
generations, the customs, traditional beliefs and stories of
a community. The goal of LORE is to provide information
easily accessible through print and digital media.
LORE Magazine is intended to be a resource guide for the
Panama Riviera connecting the local, national and
international audience with businesses, events and
opportunities in the beach and highland communities.
Designed to deliver enthusiastic, creative and complete
coverage of the area answering the questions you may
have.

Be adventurous, explore and enjoy

the Panama Riviera!

Panama

whose indigenous name translates to

abundance of fish according to the most
popular folklore version has an island feel.
Mostly due to the tropical weather and the
2490 km (1547miles) of beach. The
Panama Riviera enjoys 80 km of
seashore. Panama is ranked 50th in the
world for the length of coastline, according
to world.bymap.org. There are over 1,000
islands off the Pacific Coast. The sun rises
over the Pacific Ocean in the Panama
Riviera. Although there may be intense
thunderstorms during rainy season,
Panama is outside the hurricane belt. All of
this is excellent news for beach lovers and
water sports and fishing enthusiasts.
Panamas beaches (playas) are public
and private. Public, because the beaches
are open to everyone. Private, because
there is no single road that you can drive
along the coastline of the Panama Riviera
like found in other countries. In order to
visit any of the beaches you must enter off
the Pan-American Highway to each area.
Panama has many gorgeous beaches to
choose from, be adventurous and explore
them all!

The Panama
Riviera

Punta Chame has white-sand beaches that

stretch for 22 miles. Great for kite boarding
and other extreme water sports with a
magnificent mountain background.
Playa Malibu is a white sand beach along the
coast with good surfing at the river mouth.
Playa Gorgona is a long narrow black and
white beach great for walking and swimming.
Playa Serena has a curved bay offering
swimming, walking, surfing, and other water
sports. This spot is one of the best and most
consistent surfing spots in the Panama Bay.
Playa Coronado once inside the gates, has a
black and white sand beach with good
swimming, walking and sunbathing.
Playa Teta is one of the most popular surfing
beaches near the city. Beach access is slightly
difficult to reach, it is down a dirt road with no
signs.
Punta Barco is an affluent beachfront
community with sea cliffs bordering the waters
edge.
El Palmar is in a quaint community on the
beach with a relaxed surfer vibe. Good surfing
for beginners and more advanced. It also has
surf schools and a beautiful setting for flying
kites and relaxing in the sun.
Rio Mar has nice sea cliffs and caves offering
shade from the sun and good surfing.
Santa Clara has private communities spread
along one of the most attractive beaches on the
Pacific coast with a long white sand beach and
clear water.
Playa Blanca is a tranquil spot to swim,
sunbathe and enjoy ocean sports.

Welcome to Panama!

TIPS and
TIDBITS!!
Egg-specially Interesting:
Have you ever wondered why the eggs in Panama are
not kept in the refrigerator and if they are safe to eat?
If you shop in other foreign countries you might
encounter the same, eggs in the open air and on a
shelf next to the fruits and vegetables.
The reason may surprise you. It is linked to the way
eggs are farmed and processed. In the United States
and a few other countries it is required eggs are
washed and sprayed with a chemical sanitizer before
they are sold to the public. Washing removes the
first line of the defense that is naturally on the
eggs making them more porous. Eggs are
washed and refrigerated to reduce the risk of
salmonella infection.
In Latin America and many other countries there is
no washing step removing the natural protective
coating. The eggs are cleaned while dry, transported
and stored at room temperature.
In Panama each individual egg is marked with a date
stamp (day / month / year). It is best to break them
separately into a bowl before adding to your recipe.

Crisper Lettuce:

With so many fresh

vegetables available in
Panama, delicious salads
are easy to make. To keep
it fresh, put your lettuce
into a nice big bowl, and
put a paper towel or two
over the top so moisture
doesn't settle on the
leaves. Cover the whole
thing with a really tight
seal and store.

Loyalty Cards at
Local Stores:
Do you have a loyalty card
for the local grocery and
hardware stores? Do you
know the points you
accumulate
expire?
The vendor rules are all
different, check with each
store to understand their
procedure.

Tipping at Checkout Lines:

The question always arises what to do about the folks
packing your bags when you checkout at the grocery
stores. Do you tip, not tip, only when they take
it to your car? The people packing your bags at the
grocery stores are not on the payroll. They earn what
people tip. Many of them are making money during
their vacations or after school. Whether to tip
(propina in Spanish), and how much is always up to
the individual.

Eggspecialmente Interesante:

acumulas expiran? La reglas
para esto son diferentes para
cada tienda, confirma con cada
una
de
estas
toda
la
informacin para entender el
procedimiento.

Una Lechuga
ms Crujiente:

Con tantos vegetales frescos

disponibles en Panam, es fcil
crear exquisitas ensaladas.
Para mantener fresca tu
lechuga, colocala en un tazn
grande, con uno o dos papeles
toalla encima, de est forma se
evitar que la hmedad se
pegue a las hojas. Sellalo de
manera ajustada hasta cubrir
todo, luego almacnalo.

oronado is a coastal city and resort area located

just over an hour west of Panama City. It has been a
popular weekend destination for Panamanians for
decades and is visited yearly by thousands of
national and international tourists.
Native tribes once fished the waters off the coast of
Coronado and hunted the savannas inland of this
beach town long before the Spanish arrived in the
sixteenth century. After the arrival of the Spanish,
most of the native population succumbed to new
diseases or were enslaved and killed off by the
colonizers.
The Spanish eventually set up large estates around
Coronado (originally known as Los Llanos del Chiru)
to farm produce and raise livestock for Panama City
and other settlements. In addition, locals survived by
fishing the rich waters of the coast and still continue
the vocation today.

CORONADO
AREA

Coronado

turistas internacionales.

Folklore has it that Roberto Eisenmann, Sr. purchased

the land in the early 1940s and named it after the
famous hotel on Coronado Island in San Diego
California.
The exclusive beach community was Panamas first
resort development and in recent years has grown at a
rapid pace. New shopping malls with restaurants,
banks, medical and veterinary clinics, hardware and
garden centers and more, are appearing in the area
almost overnight.

nside the gated community of Coronado you will

find single family homes, high rises, casitas, hotels,
restaurants, religious facilities, as well as, opportunities
for golf, tennis, exercising, surfing, and other beach
activities.

unifamiliares, grandes edificios, casitas, hoteles, restaurantes, centros

The Wings of

Panama

We are not talking about chicken

wings right here but birds and
butterflies. Panama ranks in the
top 25 countries for bird
watching and is the home of over
975 different bird species. The list
does not include the migratory
birds that pass through Panama in
October
and
April.
Lush
rainforests and flowing rivers offer
a habitat to some of the most rare
and beautiful birds found in the
world.
Obviously, with that many birds it
is difficult to name them all!
Different bird species are found in
various areas and elevations of
Panama.
El Valle de Anton, only 45
minutes from Coronado, has up to
350 species of birds. Many birders
from North America and Europe
travel to the mountains of El Valle
and Cope which present excellent
birding experiences in Panama.
Some common birds in this area
are many different tanagers,
humming birds, blue headed
parrots and emerald toucans
just to name a few. To increase
your chances of seeing a good
percentage of the various species
you should consider hiring a
qualified guide.
16

www.panamalore.com

You should spread your

wings and give Panamas
fauna a try!

Of course, we have to mention the

national bird of Panama, the
Harpy Eagle, which can be found
in the Darien.
The harpy is one of the largest
species of eagle and can have a
wing span of up to 2 meters or 6.5
feet.
It is believed the name
Harpy Eagle is based on the
harpies of Greek Mythology and
was coined by South American
explorers.
Butterflies, one of natures most
eye-catching
creatures
are
majestic and alluring, appealing to
naturalists as much as birds.
Who hasnt stopped to watch
one glide by effortlessly?
There are over 250,000 species in
the world and hundreds of these
can be found in Panama.
Butterflies are identified by their
distinct markings. They can be
seen year round, but may be more
visible in the wet season (April to
December) because they rely on
specific plants. Much like birds,
assorted species can be found at
various elevations.

Las Alas
de Panam!
Abre tus alas y descubre la
fauna que Panam te ofrece!
No hablamos de alas de pollo, sino
de aves y mariposas. Panam se
ubica en la lista de los 25 mejores
pases donde observar aves, es
hogar de 975 especies de aves. Esta
lista no incluye las aves migratorias
que viajan por Panam en Octubre y
Abril. Bosques frondosos y ros
afluentes sirven como hogar para
algunas especies raras y hermosas
que puedes encontrar alrededor del
mundo.
Obviamente, con tantas especies de
aves Es difcil nombrarlas todas!
Podrs
encontrar
diferentes
especies en distintas reas y
elevaciones de Panam.
El Valle de Antn, a slo 45
minutos de Coronado, tiene ms de
350 especies de aves, muchas de las
personas que aman la observacin
de aves viajan desde Norte America
y Europa aventurndose en las
montaas de El Valle y Cop, debido
a la excelente experiencia que estas
ofrecen a los amantes de las aves.
Slo por mencionar algunos en el
rea encontrars mltiples especies
de tangares, colibres, loros de
cabeza azul, tucanes esmeralda.
Para incrementar tus posibilidades
de avistar mltiples especies debes
considerar pedir la ayuda de un
gua calificado.

Por supuesto, no podemos

pasar por alto mencionar el
ave nacional de Panam, el
guila rpia, esta puede ser
encontrada en Darin.
La arpa es una de las
guilas ms grandes del
mundo con una una expansin
de alas de hasta 2 metros 6.5
pies. Se cree que el nombre de
guila Arpa est basado en
las arpas de la Mitologa
Griega y es acuado por los
exploradores Suramericanos.
Las mariposas, son una de las
creaciones ms majestuosas y
atrayentes, enamorando a los
naturalistas tanto como las
aves.
Quin no se ha detenido a
observarlas?
Existen alrededor de 250,000
especies de aves en el mundo y
cientos de estos pueden ser
encontrados en Panam. Las
mariposas se pueden identificar
por sus marcas distintivas.
Estas se pueden ver todo el ao,
pero son ms apreciables en la
estacin lluviosa (Abril a
Diciembre)
debido
a
que
necesitan de plantas especficas.
Como las aves, diferentes
especies se encuentran en
distintas elevaciones.

The Hidden Treasures

of El Cao

Panamas
Secret Spot!

By Dr. Julia Mayo

ubbed the Valley of the Kings of Central

America by National Geographic due to the
number of tombs, gold, fine ceramics, jewelry and
other artifacts, the Parque Arqueolgico El Cao is
located 18 km west of Penonom.
This
Panamanian national treasure comprises at least
eight
(8)
tombs
dating
700-1000
AD.
Archaeological evidence found at this funerary site
is revealing many clues to an ancient society
known as the Cocl or Golden Warriors that
once roamed what is now central Panama.
Archaeologists believe that these thousand
year-old tombs could be the most significant find
for Panamanian culture since the beginning of the
20th Century.
Dr. Julia Mayo, project director and President of
Fundacin El Cao, began ground surveys in
2008, working with the support of Instituto
Nacional de Cultura de Panam, Secretaria
Nacional de Ciencia Tecnologa e Innovacin, the
Smithsonian, and National Geographic. Since
2010, Dr. Mayo and her team have uncovered
eight tombs containing between 8 to 43 skeletons.
Each tomb had at least one primary skeleton
believed to be a warrior or other high status
individual adorned with decorative gold including;
breastplates, nose rings, patterned arm cuffs,
necklaces, ear sticks and belts made of gold beads.
The warriors were accompanied by other persons
of low status or slaves that were sacrificed or
committed suicide. Curiously, the apparent
sacrifices were found buried with a vessel of
blowfish (pufferfish) bone which could well be an
indication as to how they died.
22

In

March of 2016, excavation

of Tomb 4 uncovered 30
skeletons, one wearing a gold
necklace and gold nose ring, in
addition to numerous stone tools
ceramics and jewelry made of
canine, feline and shark teeth.
Dr. Mayo hopes the artifacts
found at El Cao, which also
include axes, stingray spines,
and a belt made of whale and
jaguar teeth, can shed new light
on this ancient society.

excavation work and the El Cao

argollas nazales, mangas estampadas, collares y

road trips:
Tavidas Waterfall is the perfect
escape and is easy to get to,
especially with Waze navigation
system. You can hike, swim,
sunbathe, relax and regain your
energy. Simply type in the address
Villa Tavida - Cascada. There are
some tricky turns in Penonome city,
but Waze will guide you most of the
less than 2-hour trip. You will lose
connectivity at the church with the
yellow
banner
reading
Bienvenidos, just round the corner
and keep going straight until you see
the sign Villa Tavida on your left.
Drive straight up the hill. Park on
your left and then enter the
welcome center where you pay $5
per person. Step out, and there is a
fabulous bohio complete with
tables, chairs, hammocks and a
clean bathroom. From here, there is
a paved path (grab your walking
stick for the pictures!) with railings
through
the
forest
to
the
magnificent 104-foot (32 meter)
waterfall!

There are benches along the way to stop and have your
AHA moments. Dont forget to stop and look up, as the
last time I was there I was graced by a flock of baby
toucans. Bring a waterproof pouch for your camera as the
water misting off the waterfall will drench you even if you
don't go into the natural swimming pool beneath
the waterfall. For those with delicate feet remember
your water shoes. The mile hike to the waterfall is not
difficult you can even wear flip flops. Welcome to the
jungle we take it day by day...

Most of us have heard of
the rotator cuff but are not
sure what it is. The rotator
cuff is made up of 4
separate muscles, three of
which are on the back side
of the shoulder blade and
one beneath it.

Rotator cuff injuries can be caused

by repetitive motion such as
paddling on your surf board,
volleyball,
painting,
hoisting
suitcases into an overhead
compartment, lifting your purse
from the seat behind you or an
accident.
If you are experiencing shoulder
pain, it is a good idea to see a
physical therapist to assess the
posture and muscle strength of the
shoulder. Most of these issues can
be corrected with targeted
exercises to improve posture and
muscle balance in the shoulder.
The majority of complete rotator
cuff tears do not require surgery
and can be healed with therapy
and time.

IGUANAS

he green iguana (Iguana iguana), is a species of

lizard which is mostly herbivore, eating vegetation
such as flower buds, fruits and young leaves. It
grows to 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) in length from head to

Iguanas are cold blooded and like hot
temperatures which is what keeps them warm
since they have no way to regulate internal heat
with their own bodies.
Iguanas are social creatures that eat and live
together. They are laid back and spend most of the
day lounging in the sun because they dont actively
hunt for food. They are commonly found in
captivity as pets due to their calm disposition and

traditionally eaten to celebrate Epiphany which
commemorates the arrival of the three Magi or

Muecos de ao viejo (Dolls of the old
year) or Judas dolls are part of a Panamanian
New Years tradition. These life size people
can be seen alongside the highway. At midnight
on New Years Eve the muecos, are exploded
some people burn them but exploding seems
more fun symbolically saying goodbye to the
old year. It is to keep the fights, the gossip, the
evil and memories in the past. The muecos can
symbolize people they love or dont care for;
famous people, politicians, a family member or
friend. It is believed that burning the old starts
the New Year with a clean slate making it fresh
and new again.

anama celebrates most holidays with vigor

and magnificence and New Years Eve is no
exception, beach bashes are a highlight of the
year. Folks come with family and friends to
party under the open sky. Fireworks can be
seen in every direction for hours.
Merrymaking in the city occurs at street
parties, house parties or by enjoying the
illuminated city on a comfy spot. It is truly an
experience you will not soon forget!

Carnival in Panama has been celebrated

since the early 1900s and is the most popular

festival of the year. Historically, based in
Roman Catholic origins, the celebration is
filled with folkore and cultural projection
having become a party for all religions and
races. The fun filled holiday takes place the
four days leading up to Ash Wednesday
basically shutting down the whole country as
communities join in the festivities. The streets
are filled with parades, parties, dancing and
drinking. The celebrations includes huge

the best choice if you only have one day to
party. Mark your calendar and join in the

Coconut cream. Both are similar, the difference
is mainly consistency. Coconut cream has a
paste-like consistency it contains less water,
while coconut milk is generally a liquid. Coconut
cream is the thick non-liquid part that separates
rising to the top of the coconut milk. Coconut
cream is used as an ingredient in cooking,
having a mild non-sweet taste. It is used in
desserts and beverages like Pina coladas.
Coconut Water is the thin clear liquid found
within the young coconuts (pipas) with a sweet,
nutty taste. Naturally refreshing, it is low in
calories, fat and cholesterol free, high in sodium
and potassium, it is used as a source of fluid to
quench hydration balancing fluids after
exercise. It is also believed to promote weight
loss, relieve headaches, treat hangovers
and lower blood pressure. The ingredients

fat from the white meat inside the giant nut. It
has various applications. It is high in saturated
fat content, about 84%, explaining why it is solid
at room temperature and can last up to six
months at temperatures below 75 degrees F
(24C). It is recommended to use in small
amounts in your diet. To get the product
with the most flavor look for jars labeled virgin.
It will have more of a tropical taste because of

What causes
a tide ?
Living and playing on the beach means

being aware of the tides for walking,

swimming,
surfing,
paddle
boarding and all the fun things to do
in the ocean.
Depending on the day and time of year the
tide range on the Pacific Coast can be
over 21 feet. The height of the tides vary
during the course of a month because the
Moon is not always the same distance
from the Earth. Tides are caused by the
gravitational interaction between the
Earth and the Moon.
They occur twice a day, two high
waters and two low waters and not at the
same time each day. The gravitational
attraction of the moon causes the oceans
to bulge out in the direction of the moon.
The time changes because the Moon takes
about 24 hours and 50 minutes to line up
with exactly the same point of the Earth,
causing the timing of high tide to change
throughout the month.
Tide Disclaimer:
The tides are estimates based on the
nearest port (Balboa, Panama) and may
differ significantly depending on the
distance.

RIPTIDES
The

Panama Riviera has been

known for having dangerous riptides.

Each year a number of people get
caught up in a riptide and die
swimming in Panamas oceans. A
riptide is a strong channel of water
moving out to sea, usually through
the surf line at speeds of up to eight
feet per second.

Riptides are
identified by:
- A channel of churning, choppy water with a
line of sea foam or debris moving steadily
out to sea
- A break in the incoming wave pattern
- Different colored water beyond the surf
zone
Escaping a Riptide:

- You cannot swim out of a riptide!

- Do not panic remain calm will help con
serve energy
- Do not swim towards the shore swim
parallel until you escape the riptide
- Use landmarks to determine when you are
away from the riptide
- Breaking waves will move toward shore
- If you see someone in trouble in the water,
PLAY IT SAFE, ASK FOR HELP
- Avoid swimming alone
- Follow the lifeguard recommendations

ayudar a conservar energas.
- Evita nadar solo.
- Sigue las recomendaciones de los salvavidas.

From the Coronado Area

to Panama City

By: Karyn Saunders

It is easier than you think!

- The price to ride the bus is
$2.50 - $3.00 each way
- Dont hesitate to ask questions
- Keep your hands on your purse
and items at all times - if you have
too many bags, store them under
the bus
- There is no dress code for the bus
just clothes!
- The music may be loud and the
A/ C cold
- Relax and enjoy the experience!
You can catch all city-bound buses on
the highway in Coronado in front of
the Super 99 plaza (by the Crocs
store). Most of the buses that stop
there are going to Panama City, look
for the name in the front
window. The guy standing in the
door of the bus is referred to as Pavo
in Panama confirm with him Va
directo a Panama, S? It will take you
to Albrook Mall Bus Terminal.
Once onboard you will be asked for
your money sometime prior to
reaching the bus terminal. Having the
correct amount is helpful. The bus
may stop and pick up others along the
road.
Once at the Terminal at Albrook, you
can grab a taxi or the metro to your
destination or proceed into the mall to
do your shopping.
If you live in San Carlos or Chame or
in between, like I do, you can still
catch the bus on the highway. I stand
on the highway at the entrance of
Costa Esmeralda and put my hand out
as the bus is approachingif they have
room, theyfb.com/beachesimprovgroup.BIG/
will stop.

From

to

Panama City

the

Coronado Area!

Get back to the bus terminal via the doors

outside of El Costo or down by the Cinemas in
the Albrook Mall. You can take the foot bridge
which is located upstairs from the Food Court.
Obtain a RapidPass Card so that you can
get out on the platform where the buses are
waiting. The RapidPass is obtained at the
RapidPass kiosks, they are prior the bus
platforms turnstiles. Put $1 on the card and
that will take care of your entrance to and from
the platforms for a long time.
Prior to going to the platforms, purchase your
ticket at the kiosk that says Chame, San Carlos
or Anton. The ticket will have a number on it
which indicates what bus to board. Hold on to
this ticket until you disembark.
Go through the turnstiles, go to your left
hand and look for the names in the front
window, when you find the one that you
selected to board look for the number, to be
sure that it is the bus that you selected, if you
are unsure, ask one of the drivers standing in
front of the bus.
The Pavo may not call out the city before
you get to your destination so pay attention!
As you approach your stop, yell Parada en la
caseta and they will pull over for you to get off
the bus.

centro comercial y haz tus compras
