FROM THE MANAGEMENT AND STAFF AT HAWK AIR

Fishing Report 2016

Our fishing season runs for five months of the year, May through
the end of September. We run fifteen outposts that all offer different
fishing experiences.
Goat, a camp that we just recently reopened, had excellent
walleye fishing. Some fishermen were even fortunate in catching
jumbo perch throughout the season. Anaharea is a great location for
our guests that are looking for larger northern pike. This lake also
features excellent whitefish and lake trout. Lobo and Dibben are
great walleye and northern lakes for our smaller groups. Lobos
portage lake, Glen, produced great catches throughout the summer.
Easey Point, Little Miss and Upper Duffy provided our anglers with
fantastic fishing. A lot of walleye and northern, varying in size, were

caught at these three outposts. Some other great northern and walleye lakes are Wejin, Pichogan and Mosambik. Wejin and Mosambik
both have walleye and northern in their main lake but share a portage to the Lake Trout Lake. Nice lake trout were caught here in the
earlier months of the season. Michi lake, which is strictly a lake trout lake, fished great in the spring and fall. It seemed when the fishing
was slower on Michi our guests were still able to catch fish on Brian, the first portage off Michi. Speckled trout fishing tends to be the
best in the spring and fall. We are currently operating three speck lakes, Spyke, McCrea and Dossier. Spyke and McCrea produced some
beautiful speckled trout in May and June. Dossier has a very healthy speck population. The fish can be smaller but you can catch specks
here all summer, this season was no exception.

A hot spot for our anglers is just a short boat ride
from the camp, right near the waterfall. Some
adventurous fisherman take a walk down the

river and fish for speckled trout.

Pichogan is located in the Chapleau Game Preserve, it is not uncommon for guests to
see moose and other wildlife. The lake is seven miles long and has been a good producer
of walleye and northern over the years. Pichogan is a modern camp rebuilt in 2005 and
includes hot and cold running water and is wired with a generator.

Camp Upgrades
At the end of last season we started to add shut off buttons for the generators inside
the camps, eliminating the walk to turn them off. We also started to relocate our
generators beside the gas shacks to help centralize equipment and reduce the noise in
the camp. New larger decks were built on the gas shacks to accommodate the
generators and fish cleaning tables. Lights and electrical outlets, both inside and out
were installed. To date all our walleye and northern lakes have shut offs connected.

Around the Base

This year we had a moose visit our parking lot and a bear that helped himself to our
garbage boxes. This is the first time we have ever had a moose utilize our five minute
parking.

In the fall, if time permits, our staff likes to get out for an afternoon of speck fishing at

Dossier. The camp is a quick flight and the

fishing is always fantastic, especially for us who
are not avid fishermen. We all enjoyed a
beautiful afternoon.
The nice weather continued, allowing us to
accomplish numerous jobs. We started by
re-shingling the roof of the base and the
carpenter shop along with adding new facia,
soffit and eavestrough. Next we sided one of
our out buildings with board and batten which
we had milled. The rest of the fall was spent
servicing equipment and getting prepared for
the winter.

We start each season with a list of upgrades, repairs and wish list
items we would like to accomplish at each camp. Throughout the
summer we work towards trying to complete as many jobs as
possible. This year we were able to finish projects at almost every
camp. At Little Miss we built a new 16 x 12 foot deck and stairs on the
side of the camp, doubling it in size. This gives our guests more
outdoor living space. A new portage trail was cut to North Wejin
where we built a new dock, ramp and boat ladder. A new outhouse
was also constructed. Dibben, Upper Duffy, Anaharea, and Goat all
had boat ladders replaced. Mosambik got a facelift this fall. The

campsite was brushed and trees limbed to provide a better view of

Point we moved the water pump and batteries to the gas shack, allowing us to install a garden hose to help with cleaning fish and
washing boats. Four new singles and one double bed along with new mattresses were added to the bedrooms. One of these larger beds
was also put at Michi. These are the first double beds and we plan to add more. Lobo's 8 cubic foot fridge was replaced this spring with
a 13 cubic foot one. These bigger fridges have been well received at other camps. Easey, Lobo, Mosambik and Wejin all had 2 x 4 foot
storage boxes installed at their portage lakes in the spring. This will help keep the gas cans and tanks from being exposed to the
elements and prevent them from getting damaged. Motors can be hung on the side of the boxes to keep them off the ground.

We welcomed Adam this year as our new Cessna pilot. Adam is from Southern Ontario and is currently
working toward acquiring his automotive technician licence. He will be back with us next season.
Matti, our son-in-law, has been with us for 14 years. If Matti is not busy at the rink with his boys or being
the trainer for Fynns hockey team, he can be found doing construction jobs around the house. Matti
also takes care of our aircraft paperwork in the winter.
MARY CULHANE

My grandsons Makai and Fynn were great helpers on the dock. They lent a hand in the morning and
spent the afternoon in the lake swimming and water skiing. Thanks for all your help and we will see you

back next summer.

Uncle Andy is our senior dock hand. For being retired, he stays extremely busy. He spends time curling, snowshoeing, volunteering at
the church and fits time in for some travel to visit family.
Kelly Jr. is the base manager. In the winter, he supply teaches, works in his dads shop and curls a couple times a week. Kelly and Courtney
also work on our website and get things organized for the upcoming season.
Courtney is our office manager. She fills in at her boys school as the
secretary when needed and spends quite a few hours at the arena.
Courtney and Mattis boys, Makai and Fynn, both play rep hockey and
travel to different locations on weekends.
Kelly Sr. loves spending time in his shop doing woodworking. He
dedicates his time to building and maintaining the hockey rink he
constructs each winter for the grandkids. Each year the rink gets
bigger and better. Kelly and I never miss watching our grandkids
participate in hockey. I also enjoy watching their soccer, football and
lacrosse games. In the winter I enjoy reading and when the weather is
mild I go for walks.
We are very fortunate to have a great staff. We always look forward
to working together each season!
Mary

Tidbits For 2017

In 2017 we will be purchasing some new equipment. Seven new
Yamaha 9.9 four stroke motors will replace our Hondas at Anaharea.
The Lake Trout Lake, shared by Wejin and Mosambik will be getting
four 6 horsepower four stroke motors. This is a trial run for these
motors. We also plan to purchase six MirrorCraft 14 foot aluminium

boats.

Happy Holidays from Kelly, Mary & Family
