Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Rationale
Information is produced every now and then across the globe, as
a result of scientific, academic and industrial research. This new
information is communicated to the users through scientific publications.
This has led to the growth of literature. Along with the exponential
growth of literature the interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary nature and
specialization in research have posed many problems both to the
information seekers as well as information providers (Devi and Sankar,
2014).
Citation analysis deals with the frequency and pattern of citation
(Rubin, 2010). It is references in one text to another text, with
information on where that text can be found and useful for
understanding subject relationships, author effectiveness, publication
trends (Chikate and Patil 2008).Librarians have used citation count to
study the adequacy of collection of information materials (Devi and
Sankar, 2014). In fact, studying references cited by your faculty's
publications or your students' papers shows you the types of sources
most commonly used and valued locally in their disciplines (Curtis
2005).Among the information cited that can be revealed by citation
analysis studies is identification of which a given in discipline and why
items are cited (Rubin, 2004). However, identifying cited-references in

books and other sources has been a perennial problem in research

(Piotrowski, 2013).
Several studies conducted on citation analysis in different field of
knowledge. In the study conducted by Watkins and Gunapala (2013)
reported that facilitating access to journals for a multidisciplinary field of
study requires an understanding of the literature used by those
researchers. In addition Bigdeli, Morteza, and Gholam (2013) revealed
that authors tend to use a small number of journals to retrieve the
majority of their required information, while a small amount of their
information needs come from a wide variety of journals. Furthermore,
Ketzler and Zimmermann (2013) studied the citation analysis of the
research output of the German economic research institutes and found
that the potential citations predicted by the best model lead to different
rankings across the institutes than current citations indicating structural
change. Likewise, the most reliable way to know the contribution of
research to the world knowledgebase is through publication and citation
data. It was found that electronic format was preferred to the printed
format from 2001 through 2006. Journal articles are used (cited) the
most, followed by books and other documents like proceedings and
reports (Anilkumar and Rajaram, 2013).
In the Philippines, citation analysis was used to compare the
extent of Philippine literature cited by Philippine authors publishing
internationally and nationally, and by Philippine scientists collaborating

with the nationals of other countries and those not collaborating.

Philippine scientists tend to cite more Philippine literature when they
publish in a major national journal than they do when they publish
internationally. However, findings on whether Philippine scientists are
less likely to cite Philippine literature when collaborating with other
nationals is inconclusive. These results must be viewed cautiously
because only one national journal was included in the study. Philippine
scientists publish in a wide range of journals emanating from a wide
range of countries but they contribute very little to the high impact
journals as measured by citation. Thus, the Philippines makes a
relatively small contribution to world science (Diluvio, 1989).
With these aforementioned studies, the researcher is interested
to describe the conceptualization of the Masters theses in Library
Science of the University of Mindanao, and compiling an abstract
bibliography, hence, this research needs to be undertaken.
Research Objectives
The purpose of this study is to describe the conceptualization of
the Masters theses in Library Science of the University of Mindanao,
and compiling an abstract bibliography; specifically this study sought to
answer the following objectives:
1. To determine the profile of MLIS Theses in terms of:
1.1 Year

1.2 Number of outputs

1.3 Program
1.4Publications
1.5 Presentation
1.6 Research Design
2. To describe the conceptualization of MLIS theses in terms of:
2.1 Knowledge Genres
2.2 Number of Citation
2.3 Types of Information Sources Cited
2.4 Knowledge Content
3. To identify the knowledge gap of MLIS theses
Significance of the Study
The significance of this study lies primarily in the benefit that it
could offer to the administration of the University of Mindanao as it will
enhance the schools research program with the acquisition of a
material that would serve as a verification and selection tool of the
existing researches.
Secondly, teachers could benefit from this study especially those
who specialize in Library and Information science and also for those

teaching courses in research methods in both undergraduate and

graduate programs, as it will guide in searching for research information
and in the selection of topics for further investigation.
Third, this study will be of great help to the librarians as the output
of this study could serve as guide in making guide of the existing
unpublished materials in their respective libraries.
Fourth, this could also beneficial to the undergraduate and
graduate students as they will be provided with bibliographic information
of Masters theses in Library Science available in the library that can be
used as basis and references for their research endeavours.
Lastly, the result of this study may be of used as a guide for the
future researchers who might be interested in Bibliography citation
analysis of other unpublished materials not covered in the study. The
vital information and results can provide assistance and encourage
further or additional research on this area.
Definition of Terms
Bibliographic Citation Analysis. In this study the term is referred to as
the method used in analyzing the bibliography or references used in the
Masters theses of the Library and Information Science.

Masters in Library and Information Science Theses. This refers to

the outputs of the graduate students for the Masters in Library and
Information Science.
UNIVERSITY OFMINDANAO. This term refers to the non-sectarian
institution offering the most academic programs particularly the Masters
in Library and Information Science.
2000 to 2014. This refers to the year covered in the study.

Chapter 2
METHODS
Research Design
This study employed a content analysis, bibliographical studies,
and archival research. The content analysis approach was used
because according to Amante, Atienza and Mendoza (2008), it is a
research technique for the objective, systematic, and quantitative
description of the manifest content of communication. It would thus
provide an appropriate presentation since the researcher wanted
information relative to documents or materials which were already on
hand and available.

Hsieh, Shannon (2005) and Fraenkel, Wallen

(2006) supported the practicability of content analysis approach in their

affirmation of the said method in the subjective interpretation of the
content of text data through the systematic classification process of
coding and identifying themes or patterns. Therefore, it was potentially
the most productive approach for this study because it involved close
reading and content analyses of the texts.
In this study, the bibliographical research was used as means of
investigating the conceptualization of the theses. According to King
(2010) bibliographical investigation It provides an alphabetical list of
research sources and gives a brief summary of each source, as well as
some assessment or evaluation of various aspects which relate to its
quality. Eaton (2012) posited that bibliographical research examines

the materials of which they are made and the manner in which these
materials are put together. Books are the material means by which
literature is transmitted; therefore bibliography or the study of books is
essentially the science of the transmission of literary documents.
Furthermore, according to Krummel (2010), bibliographical research
cites and studies books and addresses the needs of readers by
describing and prescribing. Said bibliographical studies thus enable
the students to identify and evaluate and use the conventional
bibliographies which are vital tools in information retrieval (Madsen,
2000).
Another method used in my study was the archival research.
According to Ventresca and Mohr (2005), this research method included
a broad range of activities applied to facilitate the investigation of
documents and textual materials produced by individual and about
organizations. This was performed by analyzing studies conducted by
other researchers or by looking at historical records.

In addition,

archival research completes historical gaps of knowledge (Kilheeney,

2011) and it involved data already generated.
Research Locale
This study evaluated the twenty-four the Masters Theses in
Library Science of the University of Mindanao from the year 2000 up to
2014.

Data Analysis
In this study, knowledge mapping was done using document
content analysis.

The data was encoded in a spreadsheet using a

matrix with the following information: profile of the Masters theses,

knowledge genre, number of citation cited, and type of information cited.

the Masters of Arts in Education program during the year 2000. During
this period it is noted that the highest number of theses have been
produced in the year 2009 with three theses comprising 12.5 percent of
the total number of theses considered. No theses outputs have been
reflected in the year 2004 and 2007.
From 2012 to 2014, the theses have been the product of Master
in Library and information Science program which solely focused on
Library Science profession. During the year 2012, it is noted that the
highest number is reflected with 6 outputs containing 25 percent of the
total number of theses considered. This is followed by two theses in the
succeeding year with 8.33 percent, however no theses outputs has
been produced in the year 2014.

Quantitative

Research

Design.

Table

shows

the

conceptualization of UM Masters Theses in Library and Information

Science in terms of Quantitative Research Design. It shows that out of
the Twenty- three theses produced by the University of Mindanao,
Seventeen equivalent to 73.91 percent have employed the Descriptive
Survey Research Design while the rest have employed the Descriptive
Correlation Design with 26.09 percent. This means that most of the
theses writers have a preference to use the Descriptive Survey
Research Design.

Type of information resources cited. Table 3 shows the

conceptualization of UM Masters Theses in Library and Information
Science in terms of type of information cited. The references are
categories according to the resources with a total of 1,229. It can be
seen that the source category with the highest number of references
cited are books with 557 or 45.32 percent. This is followed by internet
sources with 325 or 26.44 percent; journals with 132 or 10.74 percent;
others with 92 or 7.49 percent; unpublished masters theses with 75 or

14

6.10 percent; newspapers with 33 or 2.69 percent; ProQuest (electronic

journal), eBrary (electronic books), unpublished doctoral dissertations
with 4 or 0.33 percent and magazines with 3 or 0.24 percent.
This means that the UM Masters Theses in Library and
Information Science have utilized both print and non-print information
sources and categories of information resources that are frequently
used are print sources such as books, journals and unpublished theses.
Non-print sources like internet sources. This shows further that the
thesis writers preferred the use of printed resources and electronic
materials in preparing their outputs. However, the fact that Proquest and
eBrary had become available only recently during the school year 2006
and 2012, this could account for the low utilization of the electronic
resources as references.

Data shows from 2000 up to 2014 most of the references cited
are printed materials such as books, journals, magazines, newspaper
and internet sources as no-print. It can be noted that the ProQuest
(Electronic Journals) have begun to be used as reference starting year
2010. Unpublished Doctoral Dissertations, on the other hand, has been
used as reference only beginning the year 2002. eBrary (Electronic
Books) has been used as reference for the first time in the year 2012.
This shows that the paradigm shift has been observed in the use
of information resources in the UM Masters Theses in Library and

Table-based Knowledge Mapping of UM Masters

Theses in LIS when classified according
to Subject Content
Characterization on knowledge mapping of the UM Masters
Theses in Library and Information Science by subject content.
Percentage in table five is the table-based knowledge mapping of the
UM Masters Theses in Library and Information Science according to the
subject content. The characterization and analysis of the theses out
puts are based on the standard knowledge classification system as
devised by Melvil Dewey. The presented table-based knowledge
mapping is patterned after Epplers (2008) view that knowledge content
needs to be adequately represented in a graphic format particularly for
knowledge management processes. Knowledge maps can help in the

17

generation of new concepts when presented in a table form because it

visualizes the contents of the out puts. Amorado (2012) has averred that
if one is unable to map out the existing knowledge, then it fails to
establish new knowledge; without new knowledge, then it is not
scientific writing. Created knowledge maps picture out the diverse
research topics being conducted.
It can be gleaned that there are seven (7) main knowledge
domains as presented. Presented in this discussions are the
classification numbers and their knowledge domains, number of outputs
produced with their percentage: The most studied domain is the (025)
Operations of libraries, archives, information centers which has a
percentage of 6.25 and the remaining domains has a percentage of
3.12 consecutively.

Knowledge gap is lack of point in time. In this study the analysis

is based on the content analysis of the Masters thesis. With the diverse
research outputs, still gap in research is evident. The following were the
observations: there is no qualitative research method was used and in
the quantitative research, only descriptive methods were utilized; limited
use of electronic books and journals as reference;

there were

knowledge domains in the field of Library Science were still unexplored

such as Administration of physical plant (022) and Reading and use of
other information media (028); limited publication of research output in
journal form; very few research outputs were presented in the
conferences; and citation research outputs within the field of Library
science is limited.
Conclusion
Based on the research findings, the University of Mindanao
produced research outputs in the field of Library Science with diverse
topics and different methods used. The masters theses were utilized
through publication in journals, paper presentation, and citations. The
references cited in the masters theses utilized both print and non-print
information resources. Likewise, knowledge gap is evident due to the

24

Due to the fact that this study is limited within the Masters theses
of Library Science graduates in the University of Mindanao, the
following recommendations were offered. First, for the University of
Mindanao Professional Schools, programs or activities must be
developed to promote the publication of research outputs within the
University level. Likewise, the outputs must be given priority to be
presented in the national and international research convention to
acknowledge the researchers of the university. Second, for the
professional organizations, the research outputs shall be disseminated
through presentation and publication in the local, national and
international conference. Since the tracing of utilization through
publication in research journals is limited to University of Mindanao
Library, it is highly recommended to look into or visit other universities
and colleges in order to check whether the other Masters theses in
Library Science are published in their respective school journals.
Further studies shall be conducted to map out the generated knowledge
