Offshore Renewable Energy

Scottish Supply Chain Capability

Introduction
Scottish supply chain expertise
The UK market is now the world leader in the development of offshore wind with over 3.5GWs
in operation and over 1.5GWs under construction. Scottish companies have utilised their
experience from over 40 years of activity in the North Sea oil and gas sector to become an
invaluable part of this relatively new supply chain in the UK and Northern European markets.
Scotland also leads the world in the development of ocean energy and its wave and tidal
energy sectors have benefitted enormously from this same oil and gas experience. Scottish
companies have also pioneered engineering solutions for these new energy technologies
and have also been involved in pushing the boundaries of offshore wind into much deeper
waters. Scottish companies introduced the idea of using jacket substructure technology to
the offshore wind sector to overcome water depth issues that could not be solved by the then
existing substructure technologies. Just one example of Scotlands influence on the global
offshore wind industry market.

Exceptional Experience
Scotlands 40 years of experience in the oil and gas exploration, recovery and exporting
markets, has created a wide skills base amongst the 200,000 workforce employed in the
sector to develop energy projects in the marine environment.
With over 2,000 companies involved in the development of the North Sea Scotland has an
offshore supply chain second to none. By applying this expertise to offshore wind Scottish
companies have brought this wealth of knowledge and engineering knowhow to bear on this
rapidly expanding market in Europe.

Scotland has always punched above its weight in delivering

engineering solutions which have been adopted globally for over 250
years. Scottish knowhow and inventiveness have shaped the modern
world. The field of offshore renewables will bear witness to the
continuation of this great tradition.
Fergus Ewing MSP Scotlands Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism

offshore substations
Electrical array and export design
Cable selection and installation
assessment
Grid connection studies and assessments
Electro-mechanical and mechanical design
and analysis of marine energy devices
Health and Safety planning and
assessment and CDM
Project cost control
Project management

Atkins has since won a number of

further offshore substation contracts for
the design of the complete substation
including foundations, substructures and
multidisciplinary topsides. This includes
more than 5 substations for Race Bank,
Burbo Bank extension and Walney 3 for Dong
Energy plus other wind farms such as Thanet
and Lincs.
To compliment, Atkins also offer full
electrical wind farm services, such as
substation design, inter array studies & cable
design & installation. Currently Atkins are
involved in an in depth electrical FEED study
for a Round 3 wind farm in Scottish waters.
Substructures
Atkins has a great range of substructure
experience and innovation, particularly within
jackets and monopiles.
Atkins has worked closely with BiFab, the
leading fabricator of jacket substructures
for the offshore renewables sector, to
substantially reduce the capital cost of

10 |

offshore wind through the development of an

innovative transition piece and substructure.
Recognising that much of the cost of early
jacket solutions was in the fabrication of
complex transition pieces, Atkins and BiFab
developed a smaller, simpler design that
reduces fabrication costs by 30-40% based
on large scale orders. A design which is being
developed for Beatrice Wind Farm under the
SSE Alliance Framework. Atkins have also
carried out geotechnical studies and Client
Rep services for Beatrice as well as E.ON
Rampion Wind Farm.

Grouted Connection Remedial Works

Atkins is involved in the full lifecycle
of projects and offer services in the
investigation and application of remedial
solutions for grouted monopile connections.
This experience has allowed a comprehensive
understanding of the behaviour and design
of such connections to be developed and
feeds back into our substructure designs for
continual improvements.

Atkins believe the concept will be the most

cost-effective solution for many Round 3 and
Scottish Territorial Waters sites as well as
many European sites planning to use larger
6-8MW turbines.
For monopiles, Atkins is expanding the
capabilities of the proven monopile foundation
with larger monopile diameters and deeper
water depths via the detailed design of a UK
Round 3 offshore project.

Bifab specialise in the transfer of oil and gas jacket substructure technology to the offshore wind
market. Bifab have a strong track record of successful projects for jacket sub-structures for
offshore wind farms. After completion of the Beatrice Demonstrator project where BiFab delivered
the two deep-water jacket substructures, the company have now delivered projects for the supply
of a further 41 jacket substructures.

These are for:

Innovation New Jacket Design BiFab / Atkins:

Ormonde Field Development UK Vattenfall

Based on experience gained from recently

completed offshore wind farm projects, BiFab
and Atkins have developed their own Jacket
Substructure to support offshore WTG. This
design is jointly 50:50 patented and capable
of supporting a range of turbines from 3MW
to 8.0MW in water depths 15metres down to
80 metres. This is a lightweight structure,
with potential savings in both weight and
manufacturing costs, along with the potential
to loadout more structures per barge due to
the reduced foot print at the base of the jacket.

Alpha Ventus German Offshore Project DOTI

Greater Gabbard - Fluor/SSE/RWE
Gwynt Y Mor - RWE Npower
BiFab have also supplied Tripod components to the
Global Tech 1 project, located in German, North Sea.
Mass Manufacturing:
During the construction of the two Jacket
Substructures for the Beatrice project. Talisman,
SSE and BiFab commissioned the University of
Strathclyde to carry out a detailed study on the various
manufacturing processes involved, with an aim to
maximising the total number of sub structures that we
could build in a year. This study is now complete and
we are aware of the final costings of the proposed new
buildings at our Methil, Fife facilities. This proposal
would take our current production capacity at Methil
from 60 structures to between 100 and 150 structures
per year. We intend to have this new facility 100%
operational by end 2016.
BiFab believe that Scotlands proximity to the North
Sea and Baltic Sea, together with the experience gained
from the above projects, including expertise available
at the University of Strathclyde and other educational
institutions, places our facilities in a unique position to
develop the worlds first mass manufacturing facility to
produce large offshore sub structures cost effectively.
We recognise that this is an expanding market and
we are very keen to see this kind of technique be used
more widely throughout the offshore wind industry.

from pre-consent, through construction to post
construction monitoring, providing Environmental
Impact Statement Chapters and monitoring studies as
stipulated by Marine Licenses. ESS Ecology offer the
highest standards of future-proofed survey design,
data collection, analysis and reporting, fully meeting
all statutory requirements. Our extensive experience
enables us to implement the most suitable survey and
statistical methods and provide focused studies to
address key questions built upon exhaustive searches
and evaluation of existing data, then accurately
collecting the highest quality data. ESS Ecology
reports and expert advice help reduce risks, contribute
to project risk registers, solve problems and avoid
costly delays to offshore renewable projects progress
smoothly through the consenting, construction and
operational stages. Our Integrated Management
Systems, policies & procedures are verified and scored
94.49-100% by Achilles Utilities Vendor Database
(UVDB) Verify scheme and certified to ISO 9001, 14001
and OHSAS 18001
ESS Ecology have worked on both English Channel
Round 3 Zones (Navitus Bay and Rampion), and the
following UK offshore wind farm sites Greater Gabbard,
Galloper, 3 Scottish sites, Barrow, Walney, Ormonde,
Rhyl Flats, North Hoyle, Thanet, Sheringham Shoal,
Docking Shoal, Tunes Plateau, Kentish Flats, Inner
Dowsing and Lynn. This work has involved nine years
of ongoing bird surveys and statistical analysis of key
bird species at Greater Gabbard, and Galloper during
consent, construction, and operation since project
inception in 2004 providing clients and regulators
with highest value seabird and marine mammal data,
novel survey methods to monitor collisions and inform
collision risk, and statistical analysis of displacement
and attraction. For Eneco working alongside PMSS,
we collected bird and marine mammal data collection
for Navitus Bay for Zone Appraisal Planning including
a migration programme to quantify and characterise

migration passage. For Centrica/AMEC/RES

we applied novel survey techniques for geese
and other migrants at Inner Dowsing, Lynn,
Tunes Plateau and for RWE ESS Ecology
provided mitigation for seaducks at Rhyl
Flats enabling longer construction periods.
Our analysis and presentation of five years of
survey data closed off monitoring conditions
for Kentish Flats and North Hoyle, including
investigating changes in use of windfarm area
and barrier effects. We wrote both the Inner
Dowsing Ornithology Environment Statement
chapter and Report to Inform Appropriate
Assessment.
