Careers Students Taking a year out
Read about what our students have done
Name: Phoebe Coulson
From: York, England

Age: 24

When I graduated from Nottingham University with

a degree in Modern Languages I didnt know what I
wanted to do! So when my best friend Ella asked
me to travel around the world with her I immediately
said yes. Travelling around the world is something I
used to dream about doing, so it was fantastic to get
the chance to make it a reality! We got jobs as
waitresses in a caf in York and we saved up
enough money to get us to Australia. While we were
working in the caf we planned out the stages of our
trip. I decided to write a blog about my travels so
that my friends and relatives could follow what I was
doing.
We started our journey in Sydney, Australia. I got a
job as a sales assistant in a shoe shop and Ella
worked for a telesales company. We did this for
about three months. The experience taught me how
to deal with customers, solve problems and operate
a cash register. I was good at the job but I didnt feel
particularly excited by it. I always looked forward to
coming back to our apartment and writing funny
stories and reflections about my day. Ella hated
having to sell things over the phone and felt bored
and miserable the whole time.
After Sydney, we travelled to Thailand where we
found work teaching English in a primary school in
Bangkok. It was a creative and social job which
required organization skills and the ability to think
on your feet. We loved working with the children.
Three months after arriving in Thailand, we moved
on to Argentina where we (eventually!) found work
on a farm. We had to wake up at 5 a.m. every
morning to pick fruit and vegetables. It was
physically hard and, to be honest, we both hated it.

We became quite fit and healthy, but we were

constantly tired. At the end of each day I crawled
into bed, opened my laptop and wrote about the day
and what I was going to do on the next stage of the
trip. It was the only thing I looked forward to. One
other benefit of this experience was that it gave me
a chance to use my Spanish.
The final part of our trip was spent in Spain, where I
worked as an assistant to an events organizer in
Barcelona. Ella taught English at a private language
school and really liked it. My job was quite stressful,
as there were so many things to think about and the
woman I worked for was the rudest, meanest
person I have ever met. It was hard to deal with
that, but I did, and but Im a better person for it.
After we returned home, I didnt know what to do
with myself. I read through my blog and realised
something. The one thing I loved doing was writing
and talking to people. So I applied for a job as a
journalist. Six months later, I got a job at an online
magazine as a junior travel writer. Next month Im
going back to Spain to do research for an article on
the top ten cities in Spain. I have been very
fortunate to have visited so many amazing places
and I feel very lucky to have finally got my dream
job!
